You know, when I see Shadows and Light, I see flickering, flashy lights, remnants from those disco nights and tinges of overcast hues of black and white shadows hovering between Joni and Jaco. Mostly, Joni's light vs poor Jaco's introspection looking out through the pinewood trees barricaded within himself, as if the light he sees is Joni's, while he's feeling the shadows and Michael Brecker keeps it all in balance right there in between. I can't explain it. And Joe, Jaco's pants are not only white, but they are really high waisted. I had an Argentine musician friend, whose mentor was Astor Piazzola and he lived in Boston. Does anyone know how I can get a copy? It's the song, "Oh Lord, won't you buy me a colored TV?" There was also a very nice slide-show of Joni, somewhere on the Internet, as this song played. It was picture frames of Joni, maybe around her late 20's or early 30's, where Joni's wearing some tight tiger print leather pants or some yellow-orange tint clothing and she's just sort of playing around and posing for the camera like in a playful manner like a kitten and she looks real pretty. njg ____________________________________________________________________________________ Don't get soaked. Militant hunter, redneck, and general idiot Ted Nugent played for Texas Governor Rick Perry's inaugural ball wearing a Confederate flag t-shirt, with machine guns for props, and shouted offensive remarks at non-english speakers. A spokesman for the governor, "a good friend" of Nugent, defended his antics. You can hear an exclusive Pete Townshend interview at TheWhoTour.com. If there's no good reception for me then tune me out, cuz when I get this craaaaaaaazy JMOCDed feeling, I know I'm in trouble again.) Today is the Joniest day here in my workplace! Flip city! I just had three consecutive Joni conversations in my office. Three! One right after the other, so I'm bright as a neon light. Conversation #1. Luci -- a pseudonym to protect her privacy -- came by. (Background: She's the PhD student who had Joni's LOVE play as she walked down the wedding aisle, and who met Joni in the balcony of the Hammerstein Theater and told her that story, when Joni said something like: "Good luck. It's a rough road to travel". Luci also talked to her again that night and told Joni how she had inspired her to finish her last ballet. (Luci is a tiny dancer.) She said Joni was very touched to hear that. "Woman to woman" sweet inspiration kind of thing.) Anyway, Luci pops in today and I start telling her about Joni's upcoming ballet (I had already emailed her about it) and her eyes glazed over and she said: "I can't go." However, she had this strong longing in her eyes -- I could see it, and feel it -- so I persisted. "Luci, you HAVE to! You're a dancer. And you love Joni!" Luci: "I can't. My husband would kill me." (They have a little boy. You know how it is with a child to raise.) Me: "Luci! Think about it!" Luci: "But it's so *far* away. Do you know where Calgary is? Have you looked at the map? It's way up there and way OVER there!" (she's pointing out the window) Me: "So you'd have to fly." Luci: "Well, I have a friend who would go with me, and pay for it." Me: "Are you serious? You can go FOR FREE? You HAVE to go!" Luci: "I can't. I'm writing my dissertation, and there's the conference that week." Me: "But JONI is going to be there." Luci: "Well, my conference presenation would be over by then...." Me: "See? You *can* go!" Luci: "My husband would kill me." Me: "Oh, come on. He'd understand. After all, you got MARRIED to Joni!" Luci (I see her starting to soften now, and glow a little): "Yeah, well...." Me: "Really, Luci, you should think about it. As I've gotten older, I've learned to make better decisions by wondering: 'How will I feel about what I did a month from now? A year from now? This is a once in a lifetime experience. Life is short! Go for it!' " Luci: "Well, *maybe* I could. I could get an article out of it. Yeah, I could do that! Dance magazine might be interested, and....." Me: "See!!!!" Luci (smiling, but looking confused and thoughtful at the same time): "I've got to get out of here!" (TIC! Either he's going to have to stand and fight Or take off out of here) Ha. I'll let you know if she goes. I have a feeling she may just stay away from me for a while, trying to stay on the straight and narrow. When she comes here for conversation, she knows what she'll find.....the bright red devil trying to get her to go to that Joni tourist town. Conversation #2: Stuart, our Hebrew professor, walks in. Out of all my co-workers, he understands and tolerates my JMOCD the best. We're talking about serious business and then we segue into personal. He told me he had a 60s party at his house the other night that I would have loved. He said he should have invited me. He had 12 friends over and he played the guitar. He loves Peter Paul and Mary and did a lot of their stuff, and others, and then of course I had to ask if he did any Joni and he said: "Of course! Circle Game!" Then -- difficult segue here -- we talked about parents dying, and how very awful it is, and even when it is expected how it hits you like...what? A ton of bricks? I said: "Sorry, but I just have to give you some Joni words here. 'People will tell you where they've been, they'll tell you where to go, but until you get there yourself, you never really know.' Stuart thought that was just brilliant and asked me what song it was from and I mistakenly said "Hejira"....I'll send you the lyrics." (Well, duh, of course it's Amelia, so now I have to send him BOTH songs, but that's okay, of course, cuz we all know that two songs are better than one). Conversation #3: And then along comes Erica. Here's the Joni background on HER: She's the student worker I hired the day I was going to the CSNY concert. During her interview I mentioned the concert and she said she loved CSNY, and offered: "I'm a folksinger." Me: Really? Erica: Yes, I play the guitar. Me (you know what what I'm going to ask next, of course!): Do you like Joni MItchell? Erica: I *LOVE* Joni Mitchell! Me: You're hired! Anyway, Erica came in to return MOA that I had lent her last week. She really only knows Joni's early stuff so we've progressed now to MOA. She opined that's it's really "different" and that she hasn't listened to the whole thing yet but that she likes it. I love having Erica here because I can share so many Joni moments with her. It's a warm arrangement. And now I feel like another silly girl for having rambled so much. But where else could I go with all this Joni spirit that's inside of me but the jmdl? Thank you for the safe harbor (TIC! "The roll of the harbor wake, The songs that the rigging makes...." that song is so beautiful....). May you all have as many nice Joni moments as I have had today....and you know, there may be *more* to come! Love, Patti P., not on acid, booze, and ass Needles, guns, and grass today, honest! Just Lots of laughs lots of laughs and certifiably JMOCDed, begging your pardon for any typos and bad grammer as I raced this out during my lunch hour _________________________________________________________________ From predictions to trailers, check out the MSN Entertainment Guide to the Academy Awards. http://movies.msn.com/movies/oscars2007/?icid=ncoscartagline1 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2007 16:26:20 -0500 From: Stewart.Simon@sunlife.com Subject: Music Poll from last November Somebody in this list posted a web link to a poll in either November or early December where people were asked to vote for their all time favorite song. It was pre-CD days...think of it as a Joni sandwich...the more accessable stuff on sides 1 and 4, the more adventurous on 2 and 3. So, really, at the time, there was no such thing as a 'disrupted flow' unless you put the whole thing on tape. You still had to get up and flip the discs, or-perish the thought-wait for the changer to drop the next record. Sides 1 and 4 were on the same disc, FWIW. Come to think of it, I had the factory cassette at first, so only 2 sides. From: "Dave Blackburn" > With all the recent commentary and insights into DJRD I thought it > would be fun to remaster it, since it was one of the Joni albums that > suffered, IMO, from poor mastering when transferred to CD back when > there was a rush to get the CD catalogue filled up. What was your source? It was remastered when the HDCD version came out. Paprika Plains was remixed and remastered for the "Songs of a Prairie Girl" CD. I did a lengthy side by side analysis of the new/old mixes of PP, putting them both on multitrack, starting at the same instant. You can read it here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A3UXU4YM508ZEA/102-1626720-9543354?ie=UTF8&display=public&sort%5Fby=MostRecentReview&page=3 I'd be curious to know what you did for your remastering. I didn't play that side much because it was pretty demanding listening, I wouldn't just put it on and go about my business. As for factory cassettes, I never had any luck with them; cheap housings, thin cheap tape...I'd play them a couple of times and it never failed that the tape would start spewing out of the player like a Mission-Impossible self-destructor. Then it became an issue of deciding if you could salvage the mess and wind it back up on its hubs or just trash the whole thing. I only had 3 or 4 factory cassettes, and none lasted very long. Once I rewound one but it flipped in the rewinding process and played backwards. I couldn't make out out any satanic messages however. There have been thirteen references to Joni in teh Guardian since the year started. Thought I'd share. It was a rough and rowdy voice and I was just amazed. I thought, how could Joni sound so much like Janis Joplin. That one song, One Tin Soldier, I can understand the mistake, because Joni sang against war. But, Joplin's another story. I thought, 'Well, she does Killer Kyle really well and she looks like a slim man on DJRD's album cover..I guess she can sing just like Janis." What about that slide show? I think Joni's pants were mustard color, now that I think back more. Having bought the CD with a view to trying to make the hybrid suggested by Chris, I have forced myself to listen to it with a view to understanding it. Perhaps I should have saved myself the #6 and asked Dave for his remix? Paprika Plains is 4 unrelated pieces, the most satisfying being the last movement with Jaco & W Shorter. I think that the second movement bares a passing resemblence to Frank Zappa's almost film music. I don't think I'd ever like 10th world or Dreamland, but I'd be interested to hear the HOSL out-take, when it is released. Has it been released in North America? I will extract Sides 1 & 4 plus Otis to listen to regularly, and hope to get used to the very loose feel. Off Night is well worth it to hear that curiousity of Jaco fusing his style with country. He had the technique be able to to impersonate Johnny Cash with his Bass. Maybe JP jams with Gram Parsons upstairs. Did anyone see the BBC4 (UK digital station) documentary on 70's music in California, (or Insania/Cocania - D Crosby and others freely discussed the negative effect that moving from Cannabis to Cocaine had on the music- Although I never understood the Eagles either, why after a truck load of Cocaine, would anyone think, I've got to play some Country Music:-). However, after due considerion of your arguments, I am prepared to accept that there is a possibilty that I was wrong about DJRD, and will now test out this theory that half of it is really good. In the meantime I've been motivated to buy the albums I still haven't got to see if DJRD would still be my last choice out of the whole set:-) With exam revision out of the way unless/until I have to resit I have more time to listen to the albums rather than just have them on in the background. It really is more about checking out new gear as opposed to checking out the natives. Roland introduced the VG-99 that will ship in May. It is like a VG-88 times 3 on steroids. You will now be able to layer guitar parts as well as have a 12 string in open tunings as well as transmit tunings to keyboards and synths etc. There is really too much to tell about this unit so I will paste some stuff from the website for you to check out. I will be getting one. Check them out. Retail will be about $1,200 which means dealer cost is about $800. Alot less than the $2,995 that the VG-8 retailed for when it came out. Here is the dope. Best, Paz (on the road again starting Friday!) http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.aspx?ObjectId=849 VG-99: V-Guitar System A Milestone in Guitar Modeling and Performance Technology Features In the history of guitar modeling, no manufacturer has devoted more time, resources and passion into this market segment than Roland from the worlds first guitar modeling processor, the legendary VG-8, to its popular V-Guitar predecessors. Today, Roland proudly announces another milestone in guitar modeling and performance technology: the VG-99. With three powerful new processors at its core, plus expressive performance controls such as Ribbon Controller and D BEAM, this remarkable instrument raises the bar in guitar modeling and performance technology. Dual modeling engines allow guitar and amp models to be dynamically switched, layered and combined New COSM. electric, acoustic and even bass guitar models, and new synth waves such as the famous GR-300 Guitar to MIDI converter for direct connection to keyboards, sound modules, soft synths, computers, and other MIDI-compatible devices Supports USB audio and MIDI for easy digital recording and sequencing Dual GT-Pro-class effects processor enables unequalled flexible tone creation Advanced performance controls, including D BEAM, V-LINK and Ribbon Controller take guitar performance to a whole new level Simple and intuitive knob-based interface and new design support live performance Graphical Editor software included to support sophisticated sound making Versatile I/O, including USB, S/PDIF and XLR provide pro connections for virtually every type of music production and performance on stage to professional studio recording A Milestone in Guitar Modeling and Performance Technology More Info Multi Modeling The VG-99 contains an incredible range of COSM-modeled guitars and amplifiers including new electric, acoustic and bass guitar models, a new GR-300 synth wave and much more. It even models two signal paths at once. Complete dual processing of guitar modeling on the VG-99 allows you to play two different guitar sounds simultaneously. For example, one virtual guitar could be a Telecaster. in a vintage Tweed amp with full effects and the other a nylon-string guitar with just a hint of reverb. Dynamic Control Both modeled guitar and amp paths can be active at the same time, or they can be dynamically switched or blended. You can control the switching behavior between virtual guitars and/or amps by foot controllers, buttons/knobs on the unit, or according to your picking dynamics. Imagine playing softly for an acoustic-guitar sound, then transitioning to a full metal blast simply by picking more aggressively. Furthermore, each modeled guitar can be separately assigned to individual guitar strings. For example, you could have a 12-string guitar on 1st to 4th string and Synth-bass for 5th and 6th. Alternate Tunings The VG-99 can produce custom tunings anything the player desires on any virtual guitar. A virtual Les Paul., for example, could be tuned down four or five steps for a heavy sound, while a nylon string could be tuned as a 12-string, and also tuned down four or five steps at the same time. Open and drop tunings are also supported as well as user-defined custom tunings and can be applied to any COSM. guitar, so the player can switch instantly between tuning setups without physically switching guitars or having to manually retune. Guitar Performance in Higher Dimension With its new performance-based design, the VG-99 can be placed within a players easy reach on stage by using an optional PDS-10 stand. This new style setup allows various new performance possibilities such as D BEAM, Ribbon Controller and more. In combination with the versatile new foot controller FC-300, the VG-99 takes your guitar performance on stage to a whole new dimension. Most Wanted You asked for it, now Roland delivers the most-requested new features in the VG-99, including an onboard guitar-to-MIDI converter for direct connection to keyboards, sound modules, soft synths, etc. Audio output via USB or S/PDIF digital out, and optional RAD-99 rack mount adaptor further enhance your music production environment. Built-in stereo XLR and 1/4" outputs are ideal for live stage performances and touring. The striking new on-screen editor makes programming the VG-99 super easy and fun.
