I'd like to throw my 2 cents into this discussion. I disagree that Tom Scott sound like the theme from Barney Miller on Miles of Aisles. BTW I loved that show. Wasn't there a spin off called, Fish? Anyway, Miles of Aisles was one of the first albums by Joni I ever heard but I recently listened to it again after a long absence as well as the song Joni recorded with him for his album - Love Poem. Although the sound in general is dated, it is beautiful. The secret is to listen with an open mind and immerse yourself in the period. Rainy Night House is sublime. I also love that version of Woodstock. I have a new appreciation for Love or Money since hearing Ian Shaw's cover of it thanks to Bob. I am baffled why it never ended up on DJRD with Jericho. It's weird when you see a response that someone has done to a post you haven't even seen yet, which means the person responding did get it, or else is psychic. I guess it just depends on how many servers the mail has to go through and what kinds of problems any one of them may be having. I did open a gmail account but I haven't used it much. I found it a bit confusing. I guess I could just use it for a while to figure it out, but who's got time with so much other stuff going on? I also tried the yahoo beta version and I like a lot of it because it has the look and feel of various windows-type mail programs (e.g. you can drag and drop posts into folders if you decide to keep any, or into the trash) - but, it loads too slowly, so I switched back to the older version. Hi Monika (good thread) Well i love live music too and try to get to as many shows as i can. There are far more tha i can even remember but i'll list some of the most memorable here (in order that they come to mind): Patti Smith (best gigs: SBE, Lonon, Aug 2003; "Horses" performed at Meltdown, 2005 and many others) Pet Shop Boys (how much fun was this?) Rufus Wainwright (usually very good. but i loved when he toured with the whole band) Martha Wainwright (and that mcgarrigle travelling show, lol, that was totally amazing) Susana Baca, Lila Downes, and Yusa (just speaking of rude audiences... they were awful at this) Devendra Banhart Ani Difranco Cher (you must see her if she ever has another final tour) Radiohead (around the release of Kid A) REM Ladytron Simon and Garfunkel Antony & The Jonsons Joni tribute in Carnegie Hall (had some fairly weak points, but overall was very great to be surrounded by JMDLers in carnegie listening to Joni's songs) Eddi Reader Beck Blondie Television (ok, so my friends hated this) Sinead O Connor Elanor McEvoy John Cale That one night i was in the Kashmir Klub with the London crowd. That was fan-fecking-tastic. Cat Power (jeeeesus this was intense, small art gallery, just her, piano and guitar. very beautiful). There are so many others. They will probably occur to me throughout the day. Forthcoming attractions include Dolly Parton, My Brightest Diamond, Mika, Seth Lakeman and Electric Picnic (festival, lineup not announced yet) And someday - Joni, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen ( i did see the tribute recently with Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, Beth Orton, Laurie Anderson and many others), Diana Ross, Janet Jackson. I detest the human. First of all, HUNTING is NOT a SPORT. A sport is when two parties come together and have THE SAME EQUIPMENT. Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2007 10:03:12 EST From: LCStanley7@aol.com Subject: Regrets Coyote, njc Coyote Killing Contest Prompts Howls By MATTHEW BROWN AP BAKER, Mont. (Jan. 11) - The barren buttes surrounding this small ranching town will offer scant places for coyotes to hide this weekend as hunters converge for a "calling" contest to see who can shoot the most coyotes. Part predator control, part economic development ploy, the annual event began five years ago in a bid to pique outside interest in Baker via a $6,000 purse funded by entrance fees, local businesses and the Baker Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. While organizers see success in the event's growth, the increasing popularity of such contests is prompting a backlash from animal rights groups and even some hunters, who contend the events trivialize the sport by turning it into a cash-fueled spectacle. Groups including the Humane Society of the United States and Predator Defense say neither private hunts nor public agency killings offer a real solution because of the coyote's ability to rapidly reproduce. "You kill some coyotes and six months later it's as if you didn't kill any at all. What are they accomplishing other than just being barbaric?" asked Brooks Fahy, executive director of Predator Defense. In Montana, coyotes can be hunted 24 hours a day, 12 months a year, with no limits. That provides out-of-state hunters with ample "trigger time" not available in their home states, said Geving, who already has bagged six coyotes this winter around Baker. Price and others describe a booming interest in coyote hunting, with an estimated 500 "calling contests" nationwide and more added every year. They get their name because hunters howl and make distress calls to mimic prey, attracting coyotes. Many, Price said, are conducted on the sly - invitation-only events meant to avoid the ire of animal rights groups. "Actually, that does good for us if they come and meet us and find out we're not all that bad," she said. To some hunters, turning the challenge of coyote hunting into a contest with large sums of money at stake defies long-standing traditions of the sport. Jim Posewitz, a leading voice in the field of hunters' ethics, says that to purists, the contests violate the basic tenet of "fair chase" - the notion that hunting is a private struggle between predator and prey. Your recommendations are next in line for me, along with Victoria Teng. Thanks to Victor, I finally listened to Jose Angel Hevia's, 'The Other Side.' I highly recommend this album. Please do try to listen to Hevia. The first arrangement on the album is a fusion of the Arab and Celtic worlds in accompaniment with the Prague Symphony Orchestra and the Bagad Kemper, band of bagpipes. It is beautiful! The rest of the album is unbelievable.
