Almost every weekend a few friends and I hit the bars and go to particular ones with karaoke on Saturday nights. We go to this one called Jonny Rottens very, very often. Point is, tomorrow night I've decided to sing "Free Man In Paris" for one of my karaoke songs. They've got three Joni songs, "Help Me," "FMIP" as said, and "Big Yellow Taxi." And Lord knows I have no hope in being able to sing HP decently without being one of those assholes who totally butcher a song up there and BYT isn't a favorite of mine. So that's how the tale goes! I'll have a drink, sing the song, and then have a few more. It's never advisable to have a few drinks and then go and sing! You always sound like shit. You just do man. Also I have to pick up my one friend who doesn't have a car. The thing she does have though is a computer that actually plays You Tube. I'm on dialup so I can't watch You Tube or listen to much of anything online. However, I always browse You Tube (it's a one sided love--me and You Tube--I give and I give and I give and nothing!) and noticed a lot of what looks to be good Joni performances. So I'm thinking I'm going to get to my friend's house early tomorrow night and ask her if we can watch some You Tube. Good thing is she won't find me weird for wanting to do so because she knows You Tube greatness too (oh, You Tube love everyone and breaks my heart). Some light trivial Friday fun! Alright, every Thursday my brother and I go grocery shopping for the week. Well a few weeks ago, we had a cashier ring us out named "Joni." And as usual, I said "hi, how are you" first as I make conversation with cashiers/waiters/bartenders/whatever if they reply and comply. Well that cashier talked a lot so I politely conversed. Well afterwards, my brother accused me of talking to that cashier just because her name was Joni (just as he accused me of making conversation with an Indian lady at the store once too because she was Indian and I'm really into Eastern religion/philosophy). In addition, we happened to have this cashier "Joni" three weeks in a row (I don't ever look who the cashier is as much as I look for the shortest line), and then another week we were in the checkout lane next to hers. Well my brother went on to tell my sister this yesterday, "Monika likes Joni Mitchell so much she picks this cashier named Joni to ring us out and last week she went into the line next to her." My sister then followed with asking me stupid questions which I choose to not repeat. Siblings, ugh. Now I never chose this cashier and it was purely coincidental. The only thing I will admit to is the first week we had her as a cashier, I did notice her name was Joni and thought "haha, it's Joni." But that's it man. Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2007 14:42:25 -0600 From: Robert Procyk Subject: the empire hotel Well, I never really thought of the Empire as a specific place, but just a generic beer parlor in a generic prairie town, with a generic name (The Empire). I have always pictured Saskatchewan as the locale because I remember as a kid when certain highways were being "twinned" to 4 lanes. Being the son of an RCMP officer who moved all over the damn province before I was born, as a consequence we'd always spend summers driving all over Saskatchewan visiting relatives and friends in the small towns in which they lived, even after we moved to B.C. And I remember the whole uproar twinning the highways actually caused. While you'd think it was a good thing, I know a few communities that really suffered because formerly, they would have gas stations, restaurants, or motels at the side of the road, but after the roads were twinned, they often cut off access to these places, making them inconvenient to get to, and perhaps making travellers say "ah, we'll stop at the next town, beca use the access is right along the high way." I know it sounds ridiculous, but I vividly remember the whole kerfuffle the twining of the Trans Canada created for Indian Head, Saskatchewan, and the ice cream stand, the motel, and the gas station that was formerly right on the side of the road, but soon lost all East-Bound traffic access when the government pushed through that 4 lane highway and subsequently really hurt their business. As for Maidstone, the recently twinned Yellowhead is right on the edge of town (and Joni's old house is directly on the Yellowhead), and because of the highway going through town, businesses there flourish. So, whenever I hear the song, because of all the small-town talk I heard about the pushing through of these four lane highways, I always think of Saskatchewan (where they are finally going to twin the highway from PA, where I live, to Saskatoon). Thus, I picture the whole song set in Saskatchewan. And as for the Empire Hotel in Regina, that's one scary place. You don't want to go in there without someone having your back, let's just say. Hmmm, that story rambled on longer than something Grandpa Simpson would say, didn't it? Anyway, that's my take on the Empire and Raised on Robbery. Moving house three days before Christmas with a 14 month old baby is great, I'd recommend it to anyone... Anyway, my favourites of last year: Ys - Joanna Newsom - head and shoulders above the rest, acquired taste though she undoubtedly is. I've acquired it! The Roads Don't Love You - Gemma Hayes - such a grower: it took 4 or 5 listens before it really sunk in, and I'm now listening to it a lot. The tunes and arrangements are so insidious that I'm only just realising how great the lyrics are. Coles Corner - Richard Hawley - I really can't recommend this man highly enough. When Arctic Monkeys won the Mercury Music Prize, the singer's first words were "someone call 999 [our equivalent of 911], Richard Hawley's been robbed". Just listen to the first song on this wonderful album and I DEFY you not to love it. The Jarvis Cocker Record - like Richard Hawley (and Arctic Monkeys), from Sheffield, and former leader of the sadly defunct Pulp, Jarvis's debut was deservedly well-received, though I doubt it's sold that many. One of the best songwriters around, with his mordant world view plain in titles like I Will Kill Again and [I won't type this in full as somebody may get fired] (C*nts Are Still) Running The World. Richard Hawley plays on this; meanwhile, Jarvis contributed to the next one... Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5.55 - A real turn-up for the books: thirtysomething daughter of French legend and ageless English Rose and wispy singer/actress, Charlotte, a fine actress, suddenly makes a record, and it's a stunner. Some of the most gorgeous, piano-led arrangements to be heard all year, terrific songs, and despite a barely-there voice, she manages to infuse it with some real personality. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black - showed her superb debut was no fluke with a quite brilliant collection of songs, which manage to pastiche 60s style pop-soul (and she's got the vocal chops and panache to carry this off effortlessly) while sounding utterly contemporary. Very few songwriters can write so forensically about sex and sexual jealousy. I think that's it... And I swear, there were flaps that did go "up" at the moment of descent!! I can't explain it though. Mia - - -----Original Message----- Please help. This is keeping me awake at night. Over the years, I've always assumed that the "Empire Hotel" mentioned in "Raised On Robbery" was the one in Timmins. Turns out that there are "Empire Hotels" in Vancouver, Regina, Thunder Bay, North Bay and New York. Noting the Leafs reference, I guess it would be safe to exclude non-Ontario hotels, but which hotel was she referring to? thanks ;-) BTW, you say you have no contact, but if you ever do- tell her it's " *down* go the flaps, down go the wheels" (Then again, maybe Nazareth got it wrong.... I'm an Air Canada captain, and this has always bugged me....) _________________________________________________________________ Find sales, coupons, and free shipping, all in one place!
