If you're gonna go chronologically, then the next stop (after 'Court and Spark') is my all-time favorite, 'Miles of Aisles' (Joni's first--and arguably, finest--LIVE album). On one of the best sounding "live" recordings ever produced, her voice was never better. And several of her classics (especially, songs from 'Blue') are presented in their greatest versions--either faithfully acoustic ("A Case of You," "All I Want" and "Blue"), or completely transformed with fresh, new band arrangements ("The Last Time I Saw Richard," "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio" and "Rainy Night House"). In fact, she only falters on the final two "new" songs, premiering unworthy compositions that are clearly not up to her impeccable standards. Unfortunately, these tracks would prove to be an accurate preview of lesser things to come Along with 'For the Roses' and 'Court and Spark,' I think 'Miles of Aisles' (note: BTW, you need to get the HDCD remastered edition for the complete, full-length program) is perhaps Joni's finest hour. On the other hand, I'm NOT the biggest fan of either 'The Hissing of Summer Lawns' (superficial and abstract) or 'Hejira' (chilly and rambling), which--IMO--were the beginning of the end (...he stated--ducking for cover). ;-) XXXOOO, Billy NP: 'New York Tendaberry' by Laura Nyro (1969) ============================ n a message dated 1/11/07 > PassScribe@aol wrote: > > Hi, again, Monika, > Since you've started from scratch, bought all the early albums and like > what you've heard so far, why not go in chonological order? Hello Monika and list members, I haven't posted on this list in quite a while and I don't always get to read everything, but Monika, your post and the responses it is receiving are of particular interest to me. We have almost the same Joni albums - though I also have Hejira and Miles of Aisles (live) but not STAS (though I know a couple of the songs and I'm currently learning Cactus Tree on guitar). I, too, intend to delve into more of Joni's music, and though I've had a few tastes of some of her later work, I found it a bit hard to appreciate and decided that I would understand and more readily accept it if I went in a more chronological order. Like tasting wine - going gradually from the sweet to the dry - each transition helps one appreciate the next step. Her music has so many layers to it; each song, each note, and all of the spaces between... It's quite a lot to take in, and I don't want to miss anything, but I know it takes time to soak in. So, I'm taking my time, keeping at least one or two of Joni's CDs in my car and just letting the music play and play (I never seem to get tired of her albums, which I can't say for most other albums I own)... Blue and LOTC are still my favorites of all, and thus the ones I know best. Clouds comes next. And Court and Spark is the CD that has currently been playing in my car. I'm also one of those people who hears the music before the words, and I literally have to force myself to think about the meanings of words in songs... and though it doesn't come naturally to me, I know the effort is well worth it when listening to the poetic and metaphorical writings of Joni. I probably need to be pointed in the direction of a biography or autobiography of some sort too, so I can understand more of the references she makes. Patti P. mentioned the "Woman of Heart and Mind" DVD -- it is quite well-made and SOOO worth having, I can't even begin to tell you how much I have learned from watching that documentary over and over and over again. I notice new things and become more inspired every time. Another fun thing about watching it -- as my Joni CD collection has grown, I know more and more of the songs in the documentary. And in turn, the documentary has given me a good preview of what to expect from some of the albums I have yet to buy. I remember watching it for the first time, when I only really knew the songs from the Blue album... the next time I watched it, I already had 2 or 3 other albums and I was surprised at how much more the documentary came to life as I connected while watching it. Okay, enough rambling from me... guess I am making up for my lack of posting for many months. Happy 2007, everybody! I'm gonna go practice "Cactus Tree" another time before I head off to sleep. I always order albums from the library first , give them a good number of listens, and so forth before buying them. However, there are the few exceptions in my cd collection. Some were those that are hard to find and I bought them because I saw them or they were talked about albums (more rare though). As far as Joni's albums go, I bought "For The Roses" without listening to it first because the library didn't have it and because it sounded so interesting from what I read about it. A good pick if I do say so myself! Very pleased on that buy! So far I own Blue, Clouds, Court & Spark, For The Roses, and Ladies Of The Canyon. I also have Song To A Seagull from the library. So where to next? What say you to the HOSL? I was checking that one out on Amazon. What are your opinions on the HOSL? Or perhaps Hejira? I hear some about that one. Which is not to say that I don't recommend MOA - I do, and I enjoy the record a lot, but the LA Express' sound is a bit dated. "Carey" & "Woodstock" especially are a bit 70's lite-jazz fluff. Certainly no comparison with the haunting version she performed on her '79 tour document Shadows & Light. As for Hejira being chilly and rambling - the same could be said of Hamlet and it doesn't make it any less of a piece of classic art. Thanks for bringing this topic re: picking albums in chronological order. When I discover a musician for the first time and I seriously want to get their albums, I do get their early albums first and in order as though I want to hear them as they were first heard by the fans when these albums first came out. It also affords the listener (at least for me) the opportunity to analyze in her/his own terms how the musical evolution of the artist came to be. I have friends who usually go for the album most people recommend them in the belief that those albums will further whet their musical appetite to explore others in that artist's canon. And I have tried that too (notably with Everything But the Girl, Syd Barrett, Barry Adamson -- among the few that come to mind) and it's also a good way to know the artist especially if you only want a few albums of theirs and not be a completist. Since I did not discover Joni at the time STATS debuted (I have only been a fan in 1991 or around the time NRH came out), I too did not get her early stuff because I bought what was available on the market then. So I got her albums non-chronologically but now that I have her stuff, it's interesting to listen to them in order and see her mature and grow as an artist and how her lyrics reflect the currency of her situation as well as where some of her anger comes from. Have a great time at the wedding .....and may they bump you up to first class and you find yourself sitting next to Joni Mitchell. Love, Mom Isn't that cute? Come fly with me, Joni! She will, of course. Every time I'm on a flight I get so many Joni songs in my head. (Although when *don't* I get Joni songs in my head?) I probably would have told Smurf eventually, if he asked nicely enough - and if I remembered. I was just gonna say tax, but I figured I'd throw something Canadian in there just to baffle people. We have provincial tax and the GST, which is a federal one. Very annoying when you go into a store with $100 and realize that, once you add tax, you can't afford to buy something that costs $90. Croz gives James the lyrics he'd written to "Morrison" (great song/appears on the first CPR album) and says to him, "See what you can do with this." James says, in the book, "He had the lyrics completely done. I don't think he had any melodic ideas. He just said, 'See what happens.' I emptied my mind, started thinking of Joni Mitchell, and it just came out." Thought you'd find that interesting. Earlier on that page, James talks about hearing some of his fathers songs that he had not previously studied in depth and says, "When I heard his weird tunings, I felt totally connected to David's songs and their harmonies..." Well, I guess if he appreciates weird tunings, then Joni's music must have been an influence, eh?
