Starting with the first note in Atlanta to driving back from the Asheville show with Bob Muller it was truly a once in a lifetime event. Joni Mitchell- saw her on her birthday in 98 and then w/ the orchestra for Both Sides Now. Would be nice to see her again and have a hat trick. McCoy Tyner w/Ravi Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders- at the Rialto in Atlanta. I was mesmerized the whole time. Flogging Molly at Springfest- saw them in Pensacola at the now defunct Springfest. It was so exciting, sitting on the stage near the monitor board, looking out onto a sea of people, literally feeling the intensity of the music James Taylor- saw him at the Fox theater with the orchestra. For Sweet Baby James I sat a few feet in front of him and totally sank into my chair. Allman Brothers - saw them at the Fox on my actual birthday a few years ago. My first birthday concert ever and they totally rocked, especially on Desdemona and Whipping Post. Rush- kickoff of Presto tour at War Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, SC. Nothing more needs to be said... Ray Charles- saw him twice in downtown Atlanta. Now that he's gone I'm especially glad I got to see him perform. Grateful Dead- saw them 10 times which while they were still touring, didn't seem like a lot but again, I'm thankful for what I did get to experience. Always a religious experience(saw Jerry Band twice) Merle Haggard- at the Ryman in Nashville YES- their masterworks tour several years ago....breathtaking A couple of other bands I've seen several times - Neil Young and Jethro Tull. Hi and welcome to the list. "Song To A Seagull" is as different from "Blue" as "Blue" is from "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns". "Court and Spark" is the beginning of the jazz-influenced albums, which includes (in my opinion) HOSL, DJRD, Mingus, and "Shadows and Light". I love "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" for the stories, the solos, the singing, and the visuals. On THOSL, there's a LOT to think about. This album has a lot to "think about" and I count it among Joni's Top Ten. "Way recommended" if you like "Court and Spark". All the best, Jim L. Monika said, >So far I own Blue, Clouds, Court & Spark, For The Roses, and Ladies Of The Canyon. I also have Song To A Seagull from the library. So where to next? What say you to the HOSL? I was checking that one out on Amazon. What are your opinions on the HOSL? Or perhaps Hejira? I hear some about that one. I skimmed that article you sent and loved it. I meant to print it out and give it a more serious and attentive read, but then my weak and a lazy mind forgot about it. Now I will print it out and read it when I get a block of time. I need to read more positive and inspirational things because the war weighs so heavily on my heart and mind these days. I can't wait for some new Joni. I was thrilled to see that a lot of that piece was a conversation (TIC! "He comes for conversation....") with Howard Zinn. I have a lot of affection and respect, a little passion, for him, especially after meeting him last fall. The end of her conversation with him had this: "I tried to explain, but didn't do a very good job of it because sometimes I need to write to think. So I wrote it down for her on a paper napkin (note/tic from pp: like "on the back of a cartoon coaster") and this is what I wrote: To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget." Good stuff. Merci encore une fois. H E J I R A . . . I don't even know all of her albums, and am always hesitant to get to know a new one because nothing really compares. I would think that if people could own only one Joni album, most would go for Hejira. Its an album you can't wear down. Hejira! It seems most of the remaining albums divide people into those who likes this or that or the other, some don't like the jazzy style, some don't like the eighties' stuff, some don't like her older voice, some don't like the influence of other artists, etc. I never ever heard anyone finding anything wrong with Hejira, it's... well you listen for yourself! I also think that most of the Joni-tourettes that people here suffer from consists of quotations from Hejira. I recommended it to a friend, and a few days later I heard her saying about people round here that 'they are so settled in their own ways...' I recommended it to my other friend, and her emails now abound in Joni quotations. Best Bene ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2007 17:55:04 -0800 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: Re: HOSL? Hi Monika, I agree with Michael and Jack: either HOSL or Hejira would be good choices at this point in your Joni journey. Personally, I was introduced to Joni's music because I randomly bought up a cassette of Hejira back in 1977. So I started with what was then current and had to go back and find earlier albums. I think my second album (a bootleg cassette from Saskatchwan, actually) was Miles of Aisles. In fact, for the sake of chronology, Miles of Aisles would also be a good choice at this time. You'll probably enjoy the back and forth between Joni's "older" (at that time) works and the jazzy direction she was heading in 1974. Plus, the between-song banter is legendary and fun! I compared the songs therein to the albums and they are exactly the same. There are some minor song title differences between the songbook and the CD version of the albums, e.g. "Willie" vs "Willy". For those of you who haven't seen this songbook, it is replete with Joni's art and a photo of her in what looks like her office. My she is strikingly beautiful, even though the photo in her office seems oddly out of character! The lyrics are in the first chapter surrounded by her fine water colors. The second part of the book has the piano music, lyrics and guitar chords for "Joni Mitchell", "Clouds" and "Ladies of the Canyon" in a somewhat random order compared to the banding in which they appear on their respective albums. I checked out the JMDL tabs site, thanks a bunch! I haven't spent much time on that site and didn't realize the tabs were there. I'm working on "Woodstock" now, as it is at my level of ability. It is also one of my favorite songs, both her version and CS &N's. I guess that makes me an old fart, vis a vis the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos thread. Truth is, I am an old fart and I love both bombastic and tastefully concise guitar solos and wish to play some of each myself some day. Bonneville Bruce Strumming Em.
