The group had the highest-grossing tour in 2006, selling tickets worth $138.5m (#70.6m), and playing to about a million people at 39 concerts. Barbara Streisand came second, making $92.5m (#47m) from just 20 shows as she staged her first tour since 1994. Among the most costly concerts were Madonna's Confessions tour, where the average ticket price was $184 (#93), and Streisand's comeback tour, where fans paid an average of $298 (#152).<< Anyone out there see Streisand or Madonna? And people still come here! Imagine that.... In any case, its home. I walk around here and sometimes I find people of my exact ethnic background. (and that ain't Bubba) I'm comforted by that. Have been able to get ahold of stuff thats a bit more off the beaten path, at an excellent price. When I was a child my mom used to give me a subscription to some children's book club so I always had plenty of good brain food. This *feels* like that. 2005 was Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer. 2004 was re-learning Joni. 2006 has been eMusic! I need to thank Azeem, for having mentioned eMusic. Thanks! :) Em ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2006 06:28:15 -0800 (PST) From: gaston peeters Subject: NJC - Re: some great records in 2006 I haven't bought that many albums from 2006. I considered buying the Beatles album but I've decided against it so far. Seems kinda pointless to me to transfer little bits and pieces from one song to the other. But I've heard only positive things about it, so I'll probably won't be able to resist in the long run (I have all of their other albums). Of the albums I DID buy I love the new Bob Dylan album and also "Adieu False Heart" from Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy, a very beautiful album that was more or less ignored by the public at large. Gaston frednow@aol.com wrote: Not a definitive or exhaustive list, just a bunch of albums released in 2006 I thought were really great, in no particular order: 1. The Beatles - LOVE ... nothing less than a masterpiece in my view 2. John Mayer - Continuum ... I wasn't a huge fan before, but I sure am now based solely on this album 3. Keith Jarrett - The Carnegie Hall Concert 4. Ignacio Berroa - Codes ... spectacular Afro-Cuban jazz 5. Shawn Colvin - These Four Walls 6. Sara Isaksson and Rebecka TC6rnqvist - Fire In the Hole ... two wonderful Swedish singers sing Steely Dan with intimate accompaniment 7. Larry Goldings - Quartet ... if you like really good music, this album's for you 8. Corinne Bailey Rae - Corinne Bailey Rae ... a breath of fresh air 9. Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau - Metheny/Mehldau 10. Various Artists - Gospel Music (Hyena label) ... the good old stuff, and the real deal 11. The Beatles - LOVE ... yes, I think this album is so brilliant and thrilling I listed it twice That's all for now ... I've left out a lot of really great shit. Susanna Karolina Wallumrod sounds like a tuneful sister of Jandek. Her very fragile vocals would sing the songs very slowly and quietly and when it builds up, like she does in Cohen's "Hallelujah" it can be tear-inducing. Her voice sounds like that other obscure singer from the ECM label named Susanne Abbuehl. Highly recommended. (2) Anjani (Blue Alert) - I love this album a lot. The very stark and still beauty of her interpretations and performances from this album is unlike any singer I have heard in recent years (okay, maybe Bird York). Very conversational and intimate, this album is like a companion especially when I am alone in a room. (3) Joanna Newsom (Ys) - Some freaks categorize her as belonging to freak-folk but I think this over-easy generalization posed as 'a puzzlement' (a la the King of Siam) to people who are as enthralled as me about this woman's singular album called Ys. More like chamber pop in elfin territory, Joanna Newsom is the diva of the anti-. (4) Johann Johannsson (IBM 1401, A Users Manual) - I admit that I was unprepared for the beauty when I played one of the 5 longish tracks in this Icelandic composer's album in the station. Inspired by the sounds of her father's computers, Johannsson created soundscapes so compelling that you don't want to miss anything. (5) Changcun Wang (The Mountain Swallowing Sadness) - Okay, so the recordings here were not strictly made in 2006, but then time becomes irrelevant to the sounds heard her. At once feral and sweepingly magical (yeah in that dragon in the sky kinda way), the two tracks here are as different to each other as they are a joy to listen to in their cohesive entirety. "King od Images 1995" gave me the chills. Everytime. (6) OOIOO (Taiga) - I was tempted to say that this album sounds like the Asian-in-the-mainland counterpart of Asobi Seksu, but OOIOO is really a whole universe. At once recalling Sabina Sciubba (sp?) of Brazilian Girls and Akiko Yano, the 4-girl OOIOO somehow creates sounds that are obscure yet accessible and srangely recognizable. (7) Junior Boys (So This Is Goodbye) - I used to play tracks from this album as fillers but having played all of them at one point non-successively, the songs have a bouyancy and a light lilt that appeals to me. Reminds me of Don Lennon's recent album, but less self-conscious. (8) Colleen (Colleen et Les Boites de Musique) - Hand-cranked music box that plays anything from calypso to gamelan without becoming a music box muzak. Colleen is the nom de plume of Cecile Schott and this album is intended for adults wanting that kind of music with a complexity that does not spell itself out in your ear. (9) Bonnie "Prince" Billy (The Letting Go) - I saw Will Oldham in this movie called "Old Joy" (very nice, watch it) and his acting aproximates the slow and unhurried pace of much of the tracks in this album. Very beautiful arrangements that are easy to ignore because of its lo-fi sensibility. Hope to see him live when he comes to town. (10) Thomas Dybdahl (One Day Youll Dance For Me, New York City) - What is it about Scandinavian troubadours that just make me respond the way I do to a well-conducted opera. Nice voice that seems to know its strength and with lyrics that are sometimes verging on The Shaggs' innocence. The non-English accent is not apparent yet it shows in the way he syllabicates his words. Very refreshing. Runners-up: Messer Fur Frau Muller (Triangle, Dot and Devil) Corinne Bailey Rae (Corinne Bailey Rae) Ani DiFranco (Reprieve) Pernice Brothers (Live A Little) Madeleine Peyroux (Half the Perfect World) Nina Nastasia (On Leaving) And since Bob mentioned movies, here are my top 15 movies released this year but I won't bore you with details while I liked them. Just rent them in Netflix or in your local video store when it is available in the DVD format. Not in order. (1) Three Times (2) Babel (3) The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (4) Army of Shadows (1969, but released in 2006) (5) Don't Come Knocking (6) L'Enfant (7) The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros (8) La Moustache (9) Little Miss Sunshine 10) Gabrielle 11) The Science of Sleep 12) Come Early Morning 13) Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles 14) House of Sand 15) Marie Antoinette I heard that "Volver" and "Letters from Iwo Jima" are good but I have not seen it. Dear Bubba ... I mean Em! ; ) See how much I don't know about Florida geography? The story had a dateline of Tampa, and I didn't realize Tampa isn't in Pinellas County. Now I'm curious, though: how do Floridians pronounce "Pinellas?" I would pronounce it something like "pin-AY-ehs," but I'm thinking that it's more commonly pronounced like "pin-EL-las." Yes? My family, who hails from Ohio but includes many with the Bubba gene, was always sort of fascinated by Florida. My paternal great-grandparents had a place in St. Cloud, and I remember running from the Atlantic waves at age 3 or so. I also remember HUGE insects! My mom's younger sister now lives in Ft. Lauderdale, having permanently traded the wind and snow of Chicago for Florida's warmer climate. My dad's two brothers all moved to the South, and their children followed, so now all of my cousins on my dad's side live in Kentucky, North Carolina, and South Carolina. I make a half-joke that they moved down there so they could wear their KKK hoods on more days than just Hallowe'en. It's a half-joke for a reason. The South is a nice place to visit, and I've lived in Mississippi several times. I'll likely visit the South again, but I don't see myself living there.
