If you didn't hear lots of great new music, you're just not paying attention. I picked up lots of music, these 10 made the cut as my faves - in no order: 1. The Wood Brothers - Ways Not To Lose: They wowed me at the Joni trib in NYC with Black Crow, and their CD has been in steady rotation ever since. Memorable honest roots music. 2. Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped: One of the few in my list that have been on the scene a long time. Of the umpteen albums of theirs I have, this one is my favorite. Superb from start to finish, and no 10-minute Thurston Moore feedback solos to wade through. 3. Built To Spill - You In Reverse: This was the first I heard from this band and they blew me away. Their music brought back memories of accessible 70's rock while incorporating elements of challenging indie elements. I played this one a bunch and it only got better each time. 4. Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam: BIG comeback for these guys. Instead of 2-3 great tunes, we get a whole cd's worth. "World Wide Suicide" alone is worth the purchase price. 5. My Brightest Diamond - Bring Me The Workhorse: Unlike anything else I heard this year - haunting, tuneful interesting songs - they challenge you to listen and stay with you for days. 6. The Long Winters - Putting The Days To Bed: The best indie rock I heard all year. Intelligent, and great lyrics. They had a great record to follow and did so in amazing fashion. 7. Gomez - How We Operate: Boggles my mind that this wasn't a big breakout. The songs and production are just as catchy as the fab four in their prime. And like the Beatles, Gomez features three singer/songwriter/vocalists. Everyone I played this one for loved it. 8. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife: In a class by itself. Instantly likeable and hypnotically addictive. One that you want to play again just after it's done. Creative songs, and they're not afaid to bust the 10-minute mark to take a song into explorative territory. 9. The Drive-By Truckers - Blessing & A Curse: Real, ragged, rock. They also had a huge one to follow (The Dirty South) and with this one they proved that they are still on the uptake. And a live show second to NONE. 10. The Black Keys - Magic Potion: Nothing but electric guitar played loud and hard and drums played the same. This power-duo will have you thinking about all your old metal-heroes while paving their own trail at the same time. Air-guitar album of the year. Bubbling under the top 10 were many more that turned me on, including some solid turnouts from old faves like Prince, Dylan, Tom Petty (great comeback from him), Beck, Belle & Sebastian (truly infectious pop), David Gilmour, Red Hot Chili Peppers (their best yet), Sufjan Stevens (hard not to put Avalanche in the top 10), Thom Yorke. Disappointments: Bruce Springsteen (got tired of it REAL quick), Neil Young (his heart was in the right place but the record is just too sloppy, poorly assembled and under-realized), Jolie Holland, Beth Orton. Best Concerts: Drive-By Truckers at the Orange Peel, Dave & Robin and band in San Diego, Joni Tribute at Carnegie Hall, Sonic Youth at the Orange Peel, At Stewart at the Handlebar. Movies: Little Miss Sunshine, Water, All Or Nothing (probably not from 2006 but still wonderful), Cars (yes, the Pixar movie - it was awesome). Also the year I said yes to Netflix and no to all the things about going to the movies that make it a pain-in-the-ass. Bob, looking forward to putting a new Joni on his 2007 list. NP: Creedence Clearwater Revival, "Fortunate Son" Tired of spam? Yahoo!
