I actually did catch that! It was a wonderful song! I was so touched! I have been a Carly Simon fan since the mid 70's. I just drank in every female songwriter I could at the time including Joni, Janis Ian and Joan Baez. I loved them all at the time. They gave me hope and inspiration. Love, Sherelle Patti Parlette wrote: Bonjour Dear Ones: Did anyone catch the CBS Sunday Morning Show and the Carly snippet? It was only a few seconds -- a tease -- but now I just found the whole thing. ("I can't believe I found the whole thing!" ) From Carlysimon.com: "Song For Art Buchwald Carly's dear friend, Art Buchwald, was featured on CBS Sunday Morning recently. During the show, they played a snippet of a song that Carly has written for him. We've received a lot of mail from people that wished they could hear the entire song, so Carly has kindly made it available. The song is entitled Too Soon To Say Goodbye - which matches the title of Art's recently released memoir." You can hear it by going here: http://carlysimon.com/news/news.shtml There's some French and German in it, too, for us language lovers ("auf Wiedersehen" and "au revoir"). Right below the Buchwald paragraph it is announced that she is going to be on Oprah on January 16th. Mark your red ribbon runner calendar, Cassysweet! I know everyone is very busy these day, but if you like Carly and you only have time to click on just one link today, please go to this one and watch her 8 minute and 15 second video. It is EXQUISITE, I promise you. Well, at least it is for me. The new CD, Carly says, is "lulling". http://carlysimon.com/music/classics/IntoWhite.shtml And just a little more Carly: one of my best buds in the workplace came by yesterday to say Feliz Navidad and adios, as he was on his way home to Martha's Vineyard. He says it's a sure bet that he will run into Carly, most likely coming out of the "Bunch of Grapes" bookstore or walking through Vineyard Haven. Ha! If I had my way I'd just wander through the Vineyard Haven, going cafe to cabaret...... And sorry, Victor, but the polar bears and the seals drinking and sharing Coke with one another creep me out. I do like the commercial for Oreos with Santa and the kid eating Oreos and drinking milk, done in silent-movie style. I like to buy gifts for people on a whim if I spot something that I think they'd like. That can be any time, any where and it's pretty random. I dislike the whole buy-buy-buy part of Christmas. According to some etiquette thing I read, you are under absolutely NO obligation to give someone a gift just because they gave you one, but I know a lot of us feel guilty about that - or angry with the other person for giving us something, which *makes* us feel we have to give something back. Relax and chill. You don't gotta. It's their choice to give you something. If they expect something back, it's their problem. and yet I still try to make sure that what I get my kids for xmas is evenly distributed, so I don't necessarily practice what I preach. She said: "Yeah, some lady did Big Yellow Taxi with a great power point presentation of all this environmental stuff and she stole the show." Judy said she played the guitar and sang pretty well. She said she'd try to get me a copy of the tape. Good ole Joni! The gift goes on. Okay, c'est tout. Back to the tree....got the lights halfway done and then come the doves and angels and peace signs. I'm all aflutter because tonight I ran into JIM CALHOUN in the store. YIKES! He's our local hero. Maybe only Mr. & Mrs. Muller and Jimmy know who he is. Julius would, and Vince, and you know... I ever-so-casually (fifty-fifty, fire and ice) got behind him in the checkout line and said "Hi Coach" and then blathered on about my sons graduating from UConn and going to Chicago last week and getting to see Ben Gordon play for the Bulls and yada yada yada. He talked about Chicago being a great city so I whipped out a picture of me and Michael wearing his UCONN sweatshirt atop the Sears Tower and Jim smiled and nodded (probably thinking: "Get me away from this nutcase!" LOL....) No, he was very nice and wished me "Happy Holidays" as he left the checkout. Then he heard me exclaim as he drove out of sight: "Go Huskies!" The song is in an alternate tuning, (tuned to an open chord), making it easier to create a chord by simply hitting the strings. The closest word I I have to describe the thechnique is what we used to call a "hammer-on," where the sound is produced by hitting the notes on the neckwith the left hand, rather than plucking, strumming, etc with the right. He uses the same technicques to play the harmonics, which also create a chord since the guitar is already tuned to a chord. This allows a lot less effort to play chords, and a little more time for the rhythm he does on the body of the guitar. Hammer-ons are usually a single note adition to one chord, but this guy is working the whole fretboard (and body) of the guitar. You may thank Joni for using or creating many of the tunings being used today. You can find many of them on the JMDL site under Guitar Tabs. Tune her up, capo her up and go! Good luck and Happy Holidays. P.S. Once you start playing in tunings, you may never want to go back to stanard. I hope you have lots of guitars and lots of extra strings- some of these tunings are a wee bit hard on the catgut. I regularly break my G-string. Get your mind out of the gutter.
