This is a Joni "Jean Autry" concert 1995-01-26 for press and invited guests, a radio recording, the quality is fantastic, her guitar is miked up perfectly, and is the balance between her voice and Guitar, she tells funny wonderfull stories as usual, and she starts with Refuge of the Roads, I wonder how many of her concerts start with this song? she sings Hejira, Night Ride home, Song for Sharon, Moon at the Window, and quite a few more, I love her singing and playing on her own, and this set for me is as good as it gets, the quality is amazing her guitar sounds fantastic As I have said before after finding the HOTSL demo tapes and how good they are, I wonder what other gems are in peoples possession. I came across a Nov 2003 article from Eye Weekly, dealing with the launch of her biography "Anti Diva". Seeing that Carole used to hang around Yorkville back in those days, I wondered if she had ever encountered Joni. The article does mention Carole hanging out with Jimi Hendrix and Marshall McLuhan, but no Joni, until... at the end of the article are a few excerpts from her book, including this bitchy, but funny, comment on the Canadian star scene: - -------- CANADA'S LIVE AID "The Canadian music business records 'Tears Are Not Enough' (or 'Ten Beers Are Not Enough'). During breaks, every chick singer hovers around Joni Mitchell, happy to be breathing the same air as her, except Jane Siberry, who starts talking about cows. Joni's eyes glaze over in incomprehension. I smoke a stogie with Anne Murray, and we try to guess the names of some singers we're working with. If you like Almodovar, I'd recommend Bad Education. Like all Almodovar films, the plot is very intricate, with many different stories entangled. There is a stunning scene where Gael Garcia Bernal makes a drag act, I can't remember which song he sings, maybe it's 'Perhaps', but he sings it superslowly, and he is SO BEAUTIFUL. I'd watch it again jsut for that. The plot of Todo sobre mi madre reminds me of a French film I just saw, The Pageturner: a girl who failed at a music audition as a child gets a job with someone on the panel who is a pianovirtuoso and seeks revenge. It was the the most drab and annoying and speculative 'thriller' I've seen in a long time. Here is a link to a video which somehow makes me laugh every time I see it, story of my life I guess. It's old so maybe many of you know it: http://ryantown.com/gayboyfriend/ Best Bene Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2006 11:29:42 -0800 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: "Todo sobre mi madre" - perhaps reaching for JC but what the heck Saw a Netflix movie last night: "Todo sobre mi madre" -- All About My Mother. It's a Spanish film, set in Madrid and Barcelona, and has English and French subtitles available. Penelope Cruz has a supporting role. The movie reminded me of Joni many times for several reasons: - - - The play "A Streetcar Named Desire" figures prominently. ("She dodges the light like Blanche DuBois") - - - The lead actor, Cecilia Roth, in certain camera angles resembles Joni. - - - A supporting actor, Marisa Paredes, plays stage actor Huma Rojo. At one point, Huma says about her own cigarette smoking: "Smoke's all there's been in my life.'' Not that Joni would actually say that very thing, but it reminded me of Joni's belief that smoking grounds her. The movie is interesting and quite entertaining, and I would see it again. If not, you should before forming an opinion. It's very convincing and presents FACTS which pretty much are indisputable; for example - the 10 hottest years on record have all been in the last 14. I saw the film on DVD about two weeks ago and was very impressed with Gore's presentation - of course, for the most part he wasn't telling me anything I didn't already know. Whereas Michael Moore injects lots of spin and opinion into his films, Gore does not. And to label his presentation as hysterical is...well, hysterical. You have to understand - unless we detonate all the warheads we have, we're not going to destroy the Earth - we're going to destroy ourselves, or at least make our existence much more challenging. The Earth has been around for hundreds of millions of years, and over time it can adjust to whatever we dish out. It doesn't really care if we exist or not, so the question becomes one of habitability. The documented changes we've brought about in our climate have had many consequences and will have many more, even if we do reverse some of the trends. My father was Southeast Regional Director for the National Weather Service when we lived in Raleigh and he was selected to serve on a Weather-related committee that Gore chaired when he was a Tennessee Senator. I remember back then about his comments on how intelligent & passionate Gore was for all things Meteorological. What really boggles my mind is that you desire to denigrate someone like Al Gore while continuing to prop up Bush who has proven to be a devious liar and manipulator time and time again. And please don't tell me what your right-wing bloggers have to say - I've already read all that crap. If you have seen the film, state what your problem with it is. If you haven't seen the film, do so. I don't take Al Gore's word as gospel. After all, he's an Amurican. In fact, I doubt most people would take it as gospel. i don't even take the gospel as gospel. The film is very compelling. It's more or less just the filmed version of the presentation he has done in many cities, nothing fancy-schmancy, but for the fact that his presentation is better than the typical powerpoint shit they use everywhere else. My personal opinion (which, along with $1-$2 will buy you a cup of coffee) is that, although there seem to be natural cycles of warming and cooling that occur over long periods (ice-ages and so on), things that humankind has, as of yet, no control over, humankind is doing its utmost to pillage the earth these days and that accelerates the heat/cool process many-fold. The earth's population is at an all-time high, average temps are increasing worldwide, the North Pole looks like it's going to melt, so bye-bye Santa Claus; and, if you buy the stats that Gore presents, and there's no reason why you should not, these things are in no danger of slowing down if we continue on this route. The amount of fuel that we consume is outlandish and wasteful as well as completely unnecessary; the way we process things, our desire to acquire and consume more THINGS than ever before; the blatant disregard that we hold for future generations, or even past the next election, wherever you live, is appalling. When I say "we", I mean our elected, backed-by-big-business politicians, bolstered by generalized constituent apathy. Even looking back to my parents' generation, they never wasted anything. They were always recycling and reusing. They were that way because they lived through the depression and WW II. These days, if you have an electrical appliance and it breaks, you toss it and buy another because it's not worth the time or money to fix. Many people have huge wardrobes, monster houses, multiple vehicles - the vehicles and bathrooms in some households outnumber the people that live there. One thing Gore points out is that those who pooh-pooh the global warming theory and who get themselves published aren't respected scientists but armchair theorists, sort of like me; the respected scientists to a person all agree that global warming is a fact and that what we are doing is a major contributing factor. However, lest we sink into despair, he concludes by tellin us that slowing down and even reversing this trend will NOT require major hardships for us. It can be as simple as choosing a car that consumes less fuel or lowering the temperature a few degrees (we're talking about furnace temp - if it's AC, do the opposite.) Why not? This is little different from the recent discussion of the 9/11 thing that aired on ABC, when "liberals" were upset about the possible misrepresentation of facts, and "conservatives" urged them to see the movie before griping about it. (This also reminds me of yet another email virus alert I received today, from friends who believe any alarming thing they read as long as it contains the words "Osama bin Laden," "Jane Fonda," or "illegal aliens." Jeez -- do a Snopes.com search first, will ya??) See the movie, then have your say. Most of us make too many assumptions and try to drag each other into the Land of Our Opinion, without attempting to do our own fact finding first. (I'm guilty of this, too.) Catherine offered: > These days, if you have an electrical appliance and it > breaks, you toss it and buy another because it's not > worth the time or money to fix. It's so true. A couple of years ago when I decided to replace the head gasket on my 38 mpg Chevy Cavalier (the same car I've owned since before I joined this list almost 10 years ago), the guy at the machine shop was amazed to see me walk in with the cylinder block -- partly because I'm a woman, yes, but mostly because (as I learned from him) most car owners can't be bothered anymore with getting such a problem fixed. They'd rather just junk the car and buy another one. > Many people have huge wardrobes, monster houses, > multiple vehicles - the vehicles and bathrooms in some > households outnumber the people that live there. Uh oh ... My partner and I are guilty of having 3 bathrooms, and only two of us live in our house. (Does having 3 cats count?) To our possible credit, one of the toilets doesn't work right now, and the bathroom itself is so ugly I can hardly stand to step into the room. I do think a lot about having too big of a house for only two people ... I mean, we bought the house with the thought that my partner's mom, who's getting on in years, may live with us someday. But will we need all the space we have even then? Anyway, you're right, it's a damn disgrace the way we waste things, and covet more, More, MORE. I often wonder, if the Earth should explode and all of this CRAP flies off into outer space, what beings "out there" are going to think. I was thinking more along the lines of those really big honkin' houses that movie stars or rock stars have - y'know, five bedrooms and 7 bathrooms or whatever. I suppose if they have a lot of parties and a lot of people decide they need to pee at the same time, it could come in handy. But who the hell wants to clean 7 toilets? I'd be happy to have a 2nd bathroom in my place, because my daughter lives in the bathroom and won't let anyone else in when she's doing her hair. I often wonder, if the > Earth should explode and all > of this CRAP flies off into outer space, what beings > "out there" are going > to think. > This image makes me laugh. I've often wondered what the people in China who work in factories that make weird and useless junk out of plastic for the west think of all the weird crap they're making - the kind of stuff that's used for props or loot bags for little kids' parties for example. I've even seen fake plastic rocks. I imagine them thinking, "They don't have rocks in America?" Felicitations, Paz, on your new job! But I have to wonder if you are breaking some hearts. Does this mean you are not going to be able to join Arlo's upcoming train concert? I've been meaning to report on seeing his Family Legacy Tour last month at UConn, but never had the time. Alors, voila: I saw him at UConn last month, and it was, as you predicted, absolutely WONDERFUL! Everyone left smiling. It was all so beautiful. At "half-time" (Hello, Victor!) I bought some CDs and a poster and you know there may be more and I asked the two women selling the stuff: "Do you know Michael Paz?" "Who?" they asked. "Michael Paz", I answered. Again, I got the blank looks. "Michael Paz." Nada. Finally, the pretty blonde (no credit-card eyes) said: "You mean PAZ????!" Me: "Yeah! PAZ!!!" Okay, connection made. Phew! She asked if you would be touring with them again, and I told her: "Yes!' She was so thrilled, and as I walked back up the stairs to the mezzanine, she yelled out: "Thank you so much! You just made my day! I just love Paz!" I'm sorry, Paz, that I have forgotten her name. I wrote it in my program but can't find it at the moment. It really was a most wonderful show. At one point he said to the audience: "I know you people. You look normal, but I know. You're all those love and peace kind of people." The crowd roared. Yep. Love and peace kind of people. Let's carry on, okay? Love and peace, Patti P. P.S. I got to talk to Arlo and Sarah and Johnny after the show, and a friend took a picture of me and Arlo, but then her camera said "battery dead". She claims it was too much brilliance in one picture.
