The dump could be miles away and they may not own cars. In Toronto, every household, including apartments, and most workplaces have recycling programs. You simply put the recyclable items (cans, bottles, paper, plastics) in the recycling bin and the rest of it goes in the garbage. There is even the "green bin" - where you can put anything organic, including icky things like leftover meat, dog poop, cat litter, as well as plant materials - - and this stuff is collected, brought to a recycling plant, microwaved or subject to intense heat or something to kill off bacteria, and then turned into compost. (The organic recycling so far is only to single-family dwellings, since it's difficult to put in place in a multi-family dwelling such as an apartment building because of vermin.) No one can force you to recycle (at present) and there are still people who will toss beer garbage by the roadside because they couldn't be arsed to bring them to the next recycling bin, but, if you make it easy for people to recycle, you have a higher complaince rate and it becomes second nature. > But being serious for a minute....Jim mentioned... > there are no mandatory > automobile checks. It did bother me, when I owned a car, that, when it was three years old (actually, I hadn't HAD it three years at the time), I was made to get a clean-air check on a fairly new vehicle, and that this law applies only to automobiles and not to trucks, buses and so on that are emitting stinky exhaust fumes and that look and sound like they haven't had any work done in 20 years and are on the verge of blowing up. Call me naive, but don't most people check their cars to make sure lights and horns are working? Here they have progams that will do spot-checks and will pull cars over to check to see if they've got this and that, but mostly it's to catch people who have been drinking. They do this around Christmas time, as a rule, but sometimes on long weekends as well. If you have a signal light that's not working or certain other noticeable things (like no license plates or an expired one), the cops can pull you over and give you a ticket, but most of the time, they'll just tell you a light is out and tell you to get it fixed. If it's an expired license plate (those birth date stickers), they will usually give you a ticket. The one good thing Jeb Bush did here in FL was get rid of emissions testing. It comes back around every few years and then goes away agin. Doesn't seem to help there being crummy cars. People just use quick stop-gaps to fix and then a month later its messed up again. Its like Jesus said "there will always be poor" - and so, there will always be clunkers. I'd rather see a cop pull over a car that's streaming black smoke and cite them, than have to make every single person schlep to the inspection place. As far as vehicle mechanical condition...we've never had those, and I am glad. Well I think back in the 60's we did. I remember going with my Dad to get our old MG TF inspected and my job was to secretly touch this screw with a screwdriver to make the horn blow while my dad pushed the horn on the wheel to make it appear that was activating the horn. To now- although there may be such places in states where smoking isn't banned, in my travels over the more recent past there was only one or two places that I recall (bluebird cafi Nashville & I think also eddies attic Atlanta) where smoking wasn't allowed inside- but these were not bars they were orientated towards music listening... after a week in music city -where most of the venues allowed smoking- I got really sick- I had to leave one night before I had the chance to play because my lungs were in incredible pain... It was pretty much of a farce; if you knew the right service stations to go to, you could go and bribe them and they'd give you a sticker for your smoking clunker. It was a major pain for the 80% of us that played by the rules (but then again, isn't it always?). The bottom line is that people who are going to be responsible for their cars will be and those that ain't, ain't. As for the smoking thing, Greenville goes smoke-free on January 1 - I can't wait. Mrs. SCJoniguy & I go to an Irish pub every Tuesday for trivia night, and the smoke is awful. It'll be so nice to come home and not have to strip down and shower the stink out - plus, there ARE a couple of locations that we don't go because of the smoke that we WILL start going to when they become smoke-free. Thankfully, my favorite local live music location (The Handlebar) has been smoke free since day 1. And a question about crows Some time ago we discussed Jonis late work mostly Travelogue and Both Sides Now. My friend just returned BSN to me, after almost two years of borrowing it. I can only say again how impressed I am with this CD, and how I prefer it to TLog. I wish I understood music better, because I just lack the insight to say what it is. But it is something about Jazz that is so structured and so high flying at the same time. I think it suits her mature voice so well. It's as if she has a really tight but bouncy frame, and she can put all that Joni emotion, the sadness and the tenderness and the youthful rebelliousness, into it and stretch it without its losing its form. Like some tightropewalker who performs the most dramatic moves but always knows exactly where to put her feet, that is how I think she moves on that CD. Oh! Its beautiful! ! In contrast, I find that many of the songs on TLog are strangely frameless. Maybe it's because I've listened to too much jazz...? Finally, a question: does anyone know why are there crows or similar birds on I Wish I Were in Love Again? Every time I hear the song I am vaguely reminded of other places I have lived, because I always think for a moment that the crows are outside my window and not in the song. So I remember myself sitting in some other room(s) thinking, oh we have birds here! They _are_ birds, aren't they????? (In German, when someone 'has a bird', it means they have a bee in their bonnet...hmmm...) Would it be too much to ask that bins be provided for recycling? Actually, having grown up in Ohio and having gone back to visit many times since leaving in 1976, my impression is that most Ohioans really just don't care about recycling. If they did, they would ask for bins so they could recycle. Between that and the unbelievably unhealthy food that so many Ohioans eat, I am truly amazed that smoking in public places there has been banned. > But being serious for a minute....Jim mentioned... there are no mandatory > automobile checks. Well..I know when I need a headlight or > brakes..tires......braking light... turn signal....I think most people are > responsible enough to do this on their own. I disagree. I think at least 1/3 of the people anywhere will blow off doing what's supposed to be done unless they're made to do it. I can honestly count myself in this group. It's not that we're purposely trying to break the law, it's more about procrastinating and hoping our luck (or tires, brakes, and light bulbs) will hold out. They said she joined in New England (which sounds right to me). Simon lists http://www.jonimitchell.com/chronology/ shows Nov 13, 1975 in New Haven CT (2 shows). That's the way the Revue was booked in some cities. Then he has her in Niagara Falls, New York. I saw Joni at the 2nd show of "The Rolling Thunder Revue" at Rochester, New York's War Memorial on Nov 17, 1975. The string of dates ended at "The Night of the Hurricane Madison Square Garden". So, I'm not a betting man, but I'd say she played in 14 cities, in 16 evenings. Jim L. I don't really understand how these various places are licensed, but I guess the Phoenix is licensed as a bar (that also has bands and sometimes dancing). So smoking was allowed then. However, Ms Jones requested that there be no smoking while she was performing and so no one was allowed to smoke. That was great for us non-smokers. And now all these establishments are supposed to be smoke-free, so you'd need to go outside to light up. When I say "supposed to be", I'm sure there are places that still "allow" smoking (even though it's illegal, but they don't care) but they're mostly dives and you probably wouldn't want to go there anyway unless you wanted a knife in your back or something - which you'd probably get if you asked someone to put out their cigarette. Despite bar-owners bitching that they were going to lose business, I don't hear any of them complaining now that the law has passed. Last Friday I met with my boss to give my resignation to Pyramid Audio after 13+ years of service. Simply it was just time to move on. For the past several months I have been being courted by Mr. Ben Jaffe of the Preservation Hall. He wanted to hire me to be the Tour Manger for the band doing 200 dates a year around the world. I was so flattered at that alone, but I resisted cause I cannot be away from my boys for that much time a year. Pres Hall is a landmark jazz club at the forefront of preserving New Orleans culture. He also started a fund called New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund (NOMHRF) which is now morphing into a new project called renew orleans Foundation. There are two bands, one stays here and plays the hall (right next door to Pat O'Briens on St. Peter in the Quarter and the touring band). SO, he came up with an alternative offer. Be the Tour Manger with the band and tour as much as I want and hire an asst. to train and go out when I can't or don't want to AND be the Director of the renew orleans Project. I was stunned. Anyone who knows me knows that this is a dream come true for me. The foundation work alone is what I am meant to do to repay New Orleans for all I have received over the years and working with the band on the road and being able to see the world.... Somebody hold me down! Anyways a press release is coming this week which I will post. I will be in NYC from Dec 27-Jan 1 at the Jazz Standard where I will get my sea legs with the band. The family will be coming with me to spend New Years in the big city. Then we start a tour in late January in Alabama very close to a couple of my bitches over der in Birmingham and we are coming to a town near you so come out and see me. I will be on a tour of the UK in July and a date or two in Ireland so heads up Brits!!!!!! Also I will be in LA from January 15-21 finishing up the music for a movie I am working on about Katrina and attending the NAMM show in Anaheim.
