(This is going back twenty years, so please forgive me if I don't get this correctly, if I offend anyone with this distant memory, please forgive me, no offense is meant.) In the Sioux tribes, and others, there are people with two spirits, sometimes referred to as hoka hey, who follow both male and female paths. They will live years as male then accept the female spirit, or vice versa. I don't think it is the same as a sexual preference, but more of a way of living to embrace other parts of the society not commonly visited. They are accepted and most often regarded as medicine (wo)men and teachers. They live life backwards, for example, the opening to their teepee would face west instead of east, they would celebrate the opposite seasons, or they might sleep during the day and wake at night. The living as opposites had the sense of teaching sadness so that one may learn how different happiness can be. This is the general idea as far as I recall, that the two-spirited person swam against the norm to teach the value of the tribal customs and mores. There is a stretch here to "The Teachings of Don Juan" by Carlos Castenadas, which may or may not figure in Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. I always hoped there was a connection between Joni's concept and the works of Castenadas. I aspire to the impecability of the way of the warrior, and felt that Joni might have a great deal of that world view guiding her creativity. I am a big fan of America too. Although this has no Joni content, America was the other music I listened to on the road along with Joni when I was hitchhiking around the world. I believe A Horse With No Name is just about travelling. Like many of Joni's songs, the image of travelling alone runs through many of their songs. As you probably know, Dewey and Gerry partially grew up in England because their fathers were in the military and were stationed there. They were homesick and that's why they named their band, America. It's also why a lot of their songs are about travelling through America. When I hitchhiked through North America, I looked for a few of these iconic places I'd heard about in Joni's and America's songs. I was dismayed to find that the Ventura Highway is now a freeway. Also that hitchhiking was illegal on freeways. So much for the dream. I think for me, it has something to do with the way she sang them live....so much emotion pouring from her voice. Anyone else have an opinion? Rick Oh I agree 100%. Perhaps I'm biased because MOA was the first joni album I owned/listened to. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Blue is also exceptional from MOA though quite lovely in it's orginal form. I didn't actually acquire Blue (the album) til many years later. I went from MOA straight to Hejira and then back to HOSL. Twas a looooooong time ago. I can understand completely why joni's jokey waitress crack on Richard would nark the hell out of some people. Thing is, when you listen to and absorb the original, any 'liberties' taken in subsequent iterations can rankle like the devil. Though I love Richard from MOA (because I learned and loved it first), when I've heard live takes of songs from hejira for instance, deviations from the original can cause the left eyebrow to raise and my ever-present scowl to deepen!!! :-) You can say what you like about the musical arrangements and band presence on the MOA recordings, I know there are opinions across the spectrum on that subject, but I think Joni's singing on this album is very intimate. Warm and informed. Especially when it's just her and the guitar/dulc. and maybe a little restrained band accompaniment. Yes, I really like MOA and all it's babies. Steve (who you may remember associated as "Steve and Ken of Atlanta") here. I was commuting in to work this morning, listening to the Anita Baker Christmas CD, and thinking about how Joni's "River" (not on Anita's album) has become something of a Christmas standard, and wondering WHEN that started, with whose cover? Naturally, I thought of you, Bob: Mr. Covers, the King of Covers, keeper of the compendium of the cornucopia of Joni covers in the known universe. What do you think? WAS it Robert Downey Jr.'s cover on that Ally McBeal episode (and the CD) that started it? Now, I'm trying to think of all the "River" covers on Christmas albums: James Taylor, Sarah McLachlan, Barry Manilow, I KNOW there are more. AND, at the same time considering the newcomers it might be well to revisit some things I shared about CT way back in '99 or thereabouts. Well, just who did Joni write CT for? *Oh no, here he goes again* Well, I'm sorry, it's true! "Back in the Cellar days" ('66-'67) one night Joni came out from the back and stood next to me back in the shadows near the kitchen and, after a minute or two she said "See that guy over there? He just followed me from my gig in Toronto and before that he followed me from Philly! There are a bunch of them. There's another one over there... and one there too. There are others too. These... guys, they follow me all over the country and they write me poems and letters and want to date me and marry me and tell me their life stories. It makes me wonder, don't they have jobs? It's like they just left their lives and followed me like a bunch of puppies." ...or something to that effect. It was true! See, we had a pretty much regular gang (as you can see in the crowd shot on my Joni page, linked below. That was posed by all of us who were working on refurbishing and painting and such, getting ready to open... so we always had a pretty full house so,) as the weekends rolled by, I could pretty much tell the ones who were new in the crowd. There were always these guys and they always wanted to talk to Joni... kinda like groupies in reverse. I'm pretty sure that was where the idea for CT came from. Downey's cover certainly wasn't the first one that appeared on a Christmas album, although the fact that it was featured on a majorly popular TV show at the time gave it LOTS of exposure as a melancholy Christmas tune and gave it a much higher profile. Plus, it received additional exposure on holiday commercials. No matter what you think, this recording is very significant. Very cool show, with shape note singing and a Woody Guthrie Hanukkah song and a Jewish version of "Sleigh Ride" and a cover of the The Pretender's 2000 Miles. Introducing that last one, Tony said ironically that Chrissie Hynde was a renowned bluegrass musician, and then, apropos of nothing, said "Chrissie is a huge Joni Mitchell fan." Absolutely true, but again, apropos of nothing. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- dlmessling@rcn.com - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Dec 2006 01:28:56 -0500 From: "Cassy" Subject: John Prine Show - NJC KALAMAZOO STATE THEATRE 2005 AMERICANA MUSIC AWARDS "ARTIST OF THE YEAR" JOHN PRINE Saturday, February 10, 2007 - 8:00PM Reserved Seating $56.50 Gold Circle, $49.50 Rest of Main Floor & Mezzanine, $39.50 Balcony Grammy Awarding-winning singer/songwriter John Prine will perform at the State Theatre on Saturday, February 10 at 8 PM. There are very few treasures that arrive with a battered acoustic guitar and open up the windows on basic lives with passion and grace. But when John Prine hits the road, the darkest corners and smallest joys get illuminated by the light of his gravelly, utterly American voice, his way with the plainest of language and the vintage Guild and Martin guitars he plays. Among the numerous awards Prine has won throughout his extensive musical career, he was named the Artist Of The Year at the 2005 Americana Music Awards and he took home the Grammy Award last February for Best Contemporary Folk Album for his latest release, Fair & Square. Among the classic Prine favorites fans expect: "Sam Stone," "Hello In There," "Angel From Montgomery," "Paradise," "The Speed of the Sound of Loneliness," some new songs from Fair & Square, like "Some Humans Ain't Human," "Other Side of Town" and "My Darlin' Hometown," have been making friends everywhere they're played. Be sure to join us this February for an evening with John Prine! TICKETS ON SALE MONDAY, DECEMBER 11TH AT 10:00AM!!!
