On a side note, Public Libraries magazine instructs me that I must refer to the gay and lesbian community as GLBTQQ, for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning. Do I really have to? It seems cumbersome. Sometimes, especially in today's overly politically correct society, we get too bogged down in terminology. I am 30 and I still remember when it was okay to just say "Gay." Then lesbians didn't like "gay," so it became, "gay & lesbian." Then of course we had to include bi, so that got added in. I personally am okay and fine with GLBT. Some gays don't like transgendered being lumped in with us, because it is true that homosexuality and transsexuality are two completely different issues, and not always congruent with one another. However, since they are people on the so-called "Fringes" of the "Normal" gender roles that we are expected to live up to, as well as gays and lesbians, I don't mind them being included with us. But it has gotten ridiculous to keep adding on and on and on. I personally hate the word "Queer," and don't like it that the "younger generation" of kids has latched onto it to describe themselves. The word queer means strange, weird, unusual, etc...and was an EXTREME insult when I was in school. So, I guess the point of this email is that unfortunately, every gay/lesbian/bi/trans person you ask will probably give you a different answer....LOL. Certain things (like motorcycle helmets and seat belts, and yes, smoking) SHOULD be legislated for reasons of safety and health. I think, when it concerns smoking, non-smokers' rights should prevail. (Sorry, Joni.) Sorry I do not agree with this one...I think one of the problems with our country today is that every single time someone gets pissed about something, they think a law should be passed against it. Coming from the south, and now living in the north, I see this as especially true in the north. Everytime someone sees something up here they don't like, they think it should be "against the law." I don't think the government has any business telling a man he has to wear a helmet on a bike, nor do they have any business telling someone who rides in a car that they have to wear a seatbelt. I think that person has the right to not wear one if they want to. Sure, they are stupid, but stupidity is still their right. The government meddles too much in people's business anyway. And public opinion is not what swayed the Civil Rights movement, even though there are those misguided souls who think so. What swayed the Civil Rights Movement was the legislature and (GASP) so-called "activist judges," who were doing their Constitutional duty in deciding whether certain laws were or were not constitutional. The people were not allowed to vote on the Voting Act, the Civil Rights Act, etc. And they do not have the right to vote on whether or not I deserve equality with them. By being a U.S. Citizen, I am supposed to have that guarantee already, but of course we all know that is not necessarily true for everyone at all times. IF anyone thinks that I don't deserve the same as them, including all the fundamentalist churches who come out so strongly against it, then they should start paying my taxes...it's as simple as that. We fought a war over this, lest we forget....Taxation without Equal Representation. Gay and lesbian people in this country are nothing more than tax slaves. VLJC I'm glad Ohio got its act together to ban smoking in public places. We have such a ban in MA. Unlike seatbelts and motorcycle helmets (which I think are good ideas, but I could be presuaded either way about laws requiring them), smoking always has an effect on others. The other two are only an issue in case of an accident. And (dragging myself up on that old tired soapbox), having had the identical chemo that is used for lung cancer, I can tell you how much fun it isn't. Smoking is BAD, BAD, BAD. I said aloud to all my companions, "OMG it's Joni!" LOL They all laughed at my sudden outburst, and I was like, "I'm so happy now!" That's the first time in a LONG time I've heard Joni anywhere like that. I loved it. WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG EATS GLASS (or other small foreign objects) THE PROCEDURE What do you do if your puppy (or mischievous older dog) gets into your holiday decorations and eats some of the glass ornaments? This potentially lethal mishap can darken even the brightest holiday season. BEFORE the holiday go to a pharmacy & buy a box of cotton balls. Be sure that you get COTTON balls...not the "cosmetic puffs" that are made from man-made fibers. Also, buy a quart of half-and-half coffee cream and put it in the freezer.Should your dog eat glass ornaments, defrost the half-and-half and pour some in a bowl. Dip cotton balls into the cream and feed them to your dog. "DOSAGE" - Dogs under 10 lbs. should eat 2 balls which you have first torn into smaller pieces. Dogs 10-50 lbs should eat 3-5 balls and larger dogs should eat 5-7. You may feed larger dogs an entire cotton ball at once. Dogs seem to really like these strange "treats" and eat them readily. "HOW IT WORKS" - As the cotton works its way through the digestive tract it will find all the glass pieces and wrap itself around them. Even the teeniest shards of glass will be caught and wrapped in the cotton fibers and the cotton will protect the intestines from damage by the glass. Your dog's stools will be really weird for a few days and you will have to be careful to check for fresh blood or a tar-like appearance to the stool. If either of the latter symptoms appear you should rush your dog to the vet for a checkup but, in most cases, the dogs will be just fine. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2006 08:42:04 -0800 (PST) From: Smurf Subject: Re: try another (not!) I can see both sides of the argument about outlawing smoking in private establishments, but it was this law and the general growing intolerance for smoking that finally pushed me to do what I had always thought would be impossible. I am trying to help a very good friend who's making his first baby steps towards quitting now. He said it was very helpful when I told him that I once thought that if I quit cigs I would go through life craving them, as one does when one is a smoker and might go for a brief period without a smoke. But the fact is, I almost never want a cigarette now. Often the smell of cigarette smoke makes me want to hurl! I am grateful for no-smoking laws and for the friends -- some of them from this list -- who helped me find the courage to quit. Life is so much better without cigarettes. I do things I never could do before -- like exercise! (I am about to go ice skating at a brand new outdoor rink that opens today at lunchtime in a few minutes.) I will always regret the time, money and health I sacrificed for this stupid, stupid habit. - --Smurf, who also wears a bike helmet, a seat belt, and would wear a condom if he ever had a reason to . . . . _____________________________________________________________________________ _______ Cheap talk? I do buy that cigs are bad for a person...just not the second hand aspect) Now this is coming from a person who has and has been sucking on one of those plastic cigs for weeks now... to curb the hand-to -mouth thing. Actually..I agree with you for the most part...but let's say I have a small office I rent...(the landlord is cool ..no problem) .and several of the employee's smoke...why can't one room be set aside for the smoker? The non-smoker can simply not go in that room. This room has a huge fan/exhaust.....the smoke is all being sucked out. But...noooooooooooo........government has told me that is not permissible. But since the majority in Ohio has said ....NO to smoking...in this state..public places that is...I will go along with the majority. I don't like it...but majority rules. It is the man and the woman who do the uniting, not Jesus, not the priest, not the church. I've heard priests make this very clear during catholic weddings. The abiility of a couple to unite in marriage is given to them by God just as their very existence is. But, just as a child is conceived only by the conjugal union of a couple which is not God uniting them but them uniting themselves, so marriage is done by the couple. In the grand scheme of things, marriage comes from God which is why scriptures say, "what therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder." God gives the means, but the couple does the uniting. In my understanding, the concept of marriage being a sacrament or anything being a sacrament is it is a grace filled way for people to partake in the life giving union of God with humanity. In any sacrament, not just marriage, the purpose is for people grow closer to God who is love and in doing so to grow closer to one and other. If marriage or other sacraments aren't that in the catholic church, then there is no sacrament, null. As homosexuality is better understood as a natural condition, the catholic church will deal with the truth accordingly. However, it has a history and big business behind it, and the mighty dollar (or pound, yen, shekel, etc) rules. It's extremely unlikely it will be illegalized as long as the tobacco industry stays as poweful as it is. And government makes a lot of money off it too - the taxes in Ontario for tobacco are very high and yet people don't balk at paying whatever it is they now pay for a pack - is it $5? $7? I don't know because I quit over 20 yrs ago. Government would stand to lose a lot of revenue if they banned cigarettes - money they need to run hospitals, to care for people with lung cancer and so on. How ironic and how hypocritical. And they don't like to pay for programs to help people quit, because they're expensive and don't come with any guarantee. I sympathize with smokers, because it's highly addictive and some people - believe ir or not - enjoy smoking. I used to enjoy one cigarette, maybe two, among the 20 or so I would smoke a day. The other 18-19 I could have done without, but it doesn't work that way. Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tired of spam? Yahoo! A. because I want her to be healthy and be around for a long time and feel well B. her addiction sometimes messes me up. Today being just such an instance. I walk into the bathroom, where she has sprayed (apparently) HUGE amounts of perfume or cologne. WHOA! I immediately had the first asthma symptoms that I have felt in years. Its like it sucked the air right out of my lungs. Couldn't clear my throat. Then on the way into work, in the car, she SMOKES with the window shut. Finally I realized what was making me feel so ill and I asked her to just go ahead and open the window. And then we froze. Apparently, just putting the damn thing out wasn't an option. And now here I sit at work, feeling all flu-like. Achey, scratchy throat, sneezing, slightly runny nose. And I didn't have ANY of this til I ran into her WALL OF SMELLS this a.m. I mean I love the girl and all, but damn, its like she's trying to kill me. She should just send that perfume to North Korea, then they could give up their nukes knowing they have another way to off the rest of the world should the need arise. :( Em ps: sorry, that was a whine...I know.
