Do you mean to say that you actually have this song on record or just that you read the lyrics... they *are* pretty bad... artist: Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band lyrics title: Vagrant Winter "Relentlessly the wind blows, without conscience without sound And the howling echoes louder, from the lonely hungry hounds Vagrant Winter's in the alley and he's waiting And you my love come softly now and ease my troubled mind As we huddle by the fireside Slowly running out of time Born December's children, learned to live without a sky That's beneath the tallest buildings, even our childhood was a lie Vagrant winter's at the door now and he's moaning Come closer love and hold me, we may be the next in line As we huddle by the fireside, slowly running out of time Vagrant winter's in the moon now and he's stealing As long as you stay with me love, as long as you are mine I can make it through the worst, in the vagrant winter time" Ya know, it's funny, I performed UFG for many years after Joni taught it to me and I recall that was my favorite part of the song to sing... The tremendous strength of those lines combined with the rising melody line: "I'll lock the vagrant winter out and bolt my wandering in..." It was enough to raise the hairs on the back of the necks of at least the first 5/6 rows and certainly strong enough to get the attention of the more discerning rocker and I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened... Bob Seger hanging out at the Chessmate maybe? Who knows... ...But then, on the other hand, interestingly, 'vagrant winter' appears to be a country birdwatcher's term which refers to the occasional time when those migratory birds stay long after their 'normal' time to leave on into the wintery days... an interesting choice of words for inclusion in the context of UFG, ya think? hmmmm.... And if you're a fan of the classic rock sound, you also owe it to yourself to check out the Black Keys and their '06 release "Magic Potion". You'll hear echoes of Cream, Free, Bad Company and the Delta Blues while they're kicking your a$$ around the room. As for Joni's best band - her 1974 band was laden with talent, no doubt. I wish they had been given more of a chance to stretch out a bit during those shows. I've got to cast my vote for her 1979 'Shadows & Light' band...Metheny, Jaco, Lyle Mays, Don Alias...then again, they had an incredible catalogue of songs to work with by then. I wonder what Tom Scott, Robben Ford, Max Bennett, John Guerin, etc. would have done with those HOSL/Hejira/DJRD songs. Also, is it just me, or is Joni everywhere lately? Last week I heard "Help Me" by Joni at Johnny's Foodmaster (or "The Foodmastah," as it's called in my neighborhood), "River" by Sarah McLaughlin at Starbucks (Stahhhbucks), and "Blue Motel Room" by Joni at the new Filene's Basement Store (not anything like the original basement stowah). Let me join in the chorus of people who are thrilled that "River" is becoming a holiday standard because God knows the category could use some new blood. Also, I have been so busy I have not had the time I would need to compose an appropriately thoughtful response to Sherelle's straight-from-the-heart war-related post to me last week. I hope to get that done in the next few days. Of course it'll have to work pretty hard to bump off "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" here in SC. And hey, speaking of SC & Christmas, this is a great story ripped from today's Greenville News. My co-worker Patricia was there, in fact her husband was driving a John Deere tractor in the parade and was passed by this truck. http://www.greenvilleonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2006612050370 While I find it extremely funny, it's a miracle and a blessing that no one was hurt. I contributed by sending my own take of "Court and Spark" but that tribute CD never got released so I thought I'd like to find a home to '"Court and Spark"'. You're right, Kate; it is. Weaving another thread into this, I think it's got a lot to do with the pursuit of money. Kids have so much on their plates these days: too many subjects in school, too many extracurricular activities, all in an effort to be "well rounded" enough to get into the best university, so that in the end they can get a high paying job and make lots of MONEY! This is at the expense of enjoying their childhood, which in my opinion is about having a reasonable amount of school work, combined with enjoying activities that have nothing to do with anything but having fun. My heart would like to go back and give your little boy's heart whatever it desired on Christmas morning. I didn't know we were poor growing up. I thought we were middle class. Hah! But I do recall my sister and I dashing out the door one evening to see where the latest arsonist-lit fire was raging in the neighborhood. After the fire was out, we walked back home by an outdoor florist/tree seller and scrounged the pennies in our pockets to buy my mother a few small flowers for the table. Joni's River and Dan Fogelberg's Another Auld Lang Syne are probably the two most honest Christmas songs IMHO. There is just too much emphasis on being "successful" and that is directty linked to making a lot of money. There are lots of little kids (with high-earner parents) whose time is so scheduled that they have no time left just to hang out and be kids - and do nothin'. You asked in an earlier post about time and money and why things need to be done so quickly to save money (or something like that.) I think people - and big business and governments - are just in too much of a hurry to do things quickly and make a lot of money really fast. I'm afraid that we are selling our souls to acquire money and THINGS. It seems that when it comes to the environment, big business thinks that we shouldn't act too quickly but, when it comes to stripmining or cutting down trees, there's no time like the present. Frankly I don't have a problem with encouraging our children to work hard and excel in academia, the current trends have America's kids slipping in math and the sciences. We should always strive to do our best work and encourage it in others. Likewise, extracurricular activities encourage kids to pursue participation & leadership roles in school committees and pursue interests purely for their own sake and not for "grades". How many musicians that we love to this day started with music and extracurricular band practices at school? Sports encourages physical fitness and activity (you don't have to look very hard to see the childhood obesity issues America is dealing with). I think your point (and I agree with it) is that it's important for parents to seek balance in their children's lives as well as their own. I encouraged my son in some things (as well as being his baseball coach for 8 years) and said no to others (The Boy Scouts, mostly because they discriminate). And all the while, the goal has never been the pursuit of things or money but rather a life that is fulfilling. Teaching those values is actually pretty simple, it's just a matter of living those values. At the same time, it's important to give a child options and to be a realist. Unless they're lucky enough to develop some website that they can sell to Google for a billion, they'll be working their entire life, and they'll have to make money for housing, food, health care, etc and etc. It's not always a matter of picking between a happy childhood and working hard to carve yourself a successful niche in society, it's possible to achieve both. I feel like I've done that in my own life. BUT you are 100% correct that we do our kids a big disservice if we teach them that money equals happiness, just as we do them a disservice if we let them do whatever makes them happy all the time and not properly prepare them for the world in which they will live. Like the comedian said..."Parenting - now there's a tough job. Easy one to get, though."
