There are others who really don't give a damn and that's OK because those who DO care outweigh those who don't in my opinion. I, myself, am guilty of reading and not always replying to posts. At least we'd have the chance to know how Blue would've sounded as it was first intended to sound. Oh well, if some of you already had the chance to, why don't let the others get theirs? She is a lesbian and, as far as I know, she's been with the same woman for what seems like forever. (An acquaintance of mine is good friends with Joan, and my acquaintance's information about Joan is usually quite reliable.) I, too, met Joan backstage in Austin, Texas, in 1993 or so. She was very tired after her performance but very gracious, and even signed the inside of my friend Joyce's cowboy boot. I seem to remember that Joyce saw Joan at another concert a few years later and got her to sign the OTHER boot, too. I would love to get my hands on those boots!! So we didn't roast one. We opted for a Honey Baked ham instead, which was delivered by the postal service. We also had kim chi (which is Korean in origin), and some strange (to me) Japanese dessert items that I'm still trying to identify. The significance of Thanksgiving is supposed to have to do with the Pilgrims' first big meal with Native Americans, but it has morphed over 300+ years into being simply about giving thanks for all that one has. Some of us remember to do that, and some of us do not. Personally, I always feel guilty pigging out (as it were) during Thanksgiving when so many others in the world go hungry. I have resolved that next year I'm going to spend my time serving dinner to those less fortunate. Maybe there are some clues about what the company wants to do with the rumored JM re-issues in January 07. The "Upcoming Releases" section at Rhino shows Dec. 5 but no further. David Crosby's "If Only I Could Remember My Name" is: >A deluxe two-disc CD/DVD reissue the previously unreleased "Kids And Dogs" (featuring Jerry Garcia on guitar), 5.1 mixes, and rare video footage.> The way Rhino describes Depeche Mode's first album, it may, or may not, lack a 5.1 mix. They said the >Bonus DVD includes three bonus tracks plus six songs from a 1982 concert at London's Hammersmith Odeon. In addition, the 27-minute film Depeche Mode: 1982The Beginning Of Their So-Called Dark Phase chronicles a pivotal period in the band's history and features recent interviews.> Maybe Joni has commissioned 5.1 mixes of her albums but I doubt it. I can't imagine paying someone to spread minimalist masterpieces like "California" across 5 channels. So, that leaves video... Since the Refuge band isn't on any of the albums due in January, I don't think the January re-issues will include anything from the "Refuge of the Roads" video. This would be cool: if the BLUE set had the complete BBC2 TV appearance on a DVD. But I'll bet we'll get mostly songs from DVDs we already have like "Painting With Words and Music", "Woman of Heart and Mind", and "Shadows and Light". I predict they'll add tracks from "The Old Grey Whistle Test". If that first Carnegie Hall show really is in the can, I don't think Joni would package it as a freebie. From the pieces I've heard, it's worthy of a title of its own. Jim L. PS, Remember when we thought we'd get DualDisc reissues with free video on the DVD side, like "Devils and Dust"? This year I guess the new format is 2 disc sets, and the list prices on Amazon are higher. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2006 00:09:40 -0500 From: "Cassy" Subject: NJC - Tom Waitts on Letterman tonight I know some of you are fans of Tom Waitts. This one came from Jeff Capp. I love little tidbits like this: - ------------------------------------ "At least the moon at the window The thieves left that behind" This is an allusion to / appropriation of one of the most famous poems by the Japanese Buddhist priest Ryokan (1758-1831). The poem entitled "The Thief Left It Behind" is as follows: The thief left it behind: the moon at my window. According to Ivan M. Granger "The moon is a common metaphor, especially among the Zen poets, to represent enlightened awareness. In this haiku Ryokan is laughing at the absurdity of the theft. "The thief left it behind," he foolishly couldn't recognize the one great treasure the poor monk possessed -- "the moon," enlightenment -- and, instead, took an armload of worthless junk. (To point out what a petty haul it was, Ryokan even ran after the thief with the missed cushion.) Any sort of theft of Ryokan's possessions was a pointless act because, of course, who can take the moon from his window? Ryokan is amused and invites us to join in his laughter." This quote and other information about Ryokan can be found on Granger's website: http://www.poetry-chaikhana .com/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2006 00:05:54 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: NJC Off to Aruba Hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving.
