Re-released (VLJC) ["Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Typo I'm always redesigning CD covers and repackaging albums. Not just Joni's. I redesigned S&L for two reasons; I never liked the original artwork (I would never say that about any other album of hers, particularly with her paintings on them). I like the idea of her photography on it but not the way it was put together. The other reason is because the CD I have is the local one which has two tracks missing from the vinyl edition. I managed to put the two missing tracks back in and re-burned it. I also have the DVD so, I took some screenshots. I would have liked to squeeze Jaco's Solo in there too but that would be a lot of work and I would have to reconfigure the whole thing as a double CD. Sometime in the future I might try that. I have slightly redesigned several of Joni's album covers. Blue, for example. I found a better shot from the cover shoot that is a clearer view of Joni's face without the microphone in front of her. I also added Urge For Going and Hunter back into it. I've always done this sort of thing. Weird hobby, huh? It started with dance music. I love remixes but, unless you make a compilation, when would you play a single on its own? I recompile the album and add in the remixes and any extra songs from the singles or special editions. Therefore, I get to listen to the album in its entirety. It makes me feel like the album is complete. I understand that Urge For Going and Hunter were originally meant to be included on Blue but were dropped for whatever reason. I have simply restored it to how it was intended to be. I am currently working on a better configuration for the Rolling Thunder Revue. I guess what it comes down to is, I'm a frustrated music producer. That would be my dream job. I'd still have to design the covers too though :-) Mark in Sydney NP The Gallery - Johnny Cash Show On 27/11/2006, at 1:36 AM, Bob Muller wrote: > > > LOL...a Freudian slip, M-L? > > And I have to ask - why would you be creating artwork for a CD (S&L) > that already has artwork? > > Bob > > NP: Ani, "Lost Woman Song" > > > Access over 1 million songs - Yahoo! Got it's name from retailers years ago who operated in the red most of the year; the day after Thanksgiving finally put them in the black, hence Black Friday. I participate in this day of shopping but only for items I was planning to buy anyway. For example, last year I bought a nicely outfitted Hewlett Packard laptop for $350 and this year I bought two 60G i-pods for $248 each (normally the price for a 30G). It is the only way I can afford some of the items requested. The prices offered on this shopping day are the lowest of the year and I determine how much my time is worth -vs- how much money I can save. If it's worthwhile I shop, if not I stay in bed. This year I waited for three hours to save $300 so it was absolutely worth my time. One has to have a strategy when pulling out of the driveway. Joining the madness isn't for the faint of heart because some people are animals and won't think twice about trampling someone to get their bargain purchase. Of course, that's not my personal style but it can be scary when your feet don't touch the ground when the crowd surges forward at the opening of the doors. I was lucky that this year my purchase was at a local mom and pop store whose advertisement was in the middle of the news articles and overlooked by those who pour through the color supplements and camp out overnight at Best Buy. The age of the single is very much back. But that was JONI'S change. She added All I Want & The Last Time I Saw Richard and deleted UFG (which clearly does not belong) and Hunter (which is real similar to This Flight Tonight). So in order for your 'restoration' to be complete, you'd have to take out what are arguably two of the strongest tunes on it. I mean, I guess it's OK, you can do what you want - but I'm just saying that if you want to hear Joni's intention for Blue, those two tunes ain't a part of it. Anyway, you sure do a great job with the artwork - I suppose I'm just not that into that component of it. The differences are always what makes the world interesting though. In a full-page advertisement appearing in Sunday editions of The New York Times, Ono urges readers to mark the anniversary by apologizing to those who have suffered because of violence and war. Ono was with Lennon when he was gunned down as he returned home from a recording studio on Dec. 8, 1980. The shooter, Mark David Chapman, remains in New York's Attica state prison. His fourth request for parole was denied last month. Of her own loss, Ono says: "I don't know if I am ready yet to forgive the one who pulled the trigger. ... Did any of you see her on some awards show when she had all this cleavage showing and she grabbed her breasts and quipped: "I thought I'd rise to the occasion!" Too funnee. I also like the Audrey Hepburn piece. I jotted down a quote of hers that touched me, but I don't think I got it all. Did you? Most of the time I use the "shuffle" mode and then each single recording becomes much more viable in and of itself. Singles are back in vogue due to i-Tunes and the ability to buy just that one song on the Cd that rang your chimes is again becoming more prevalent than listening to a compilation in it's entirety. 45's were the ticket when I was younger and single-track i-Tunes purchases are today's equivalent. Re-released (VLJC) This week's issue of Entertainment Weekly 12/1/06 has a nice 1/4 page box in the music section featuring David Crosby: Critic's Choice "The Crosby Show" The folkie's 35-year-old solo debut is an album to Remember . The title of David Crosby's 1971 debut solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name, now seems like less of a joke by the singer-songwriter than *on* him, given the CSN member's subsequent drug and health issues. But the music stands as some of the greatest to be produced by the early-'70s West Coast scene. It's also an aural snapshot of that most incestuous of musical communities, thanks to contributions from Neil Young, Graham Nash, Joni Mitchell, and members of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. Yet this album is very much the Crozzer's show, as his never-better vocals dominate tracks such as the cinematic "Cowboy Movie," the beautiful anti-guru tune "Laughing," and the hippie-scat track "Song With No Words." Now rereleased by Rhino in remastered form complete with photo gallery and bonus track (the excellent "Kids and Dogs"), this is an album whose positive qualities are as clear as its author's memories may, indeed, be foggy. A (grade) Also in a caption under his '70s era picture is: The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer also recently released a three-CD boxed set, Voyage, featuring tracks by the Byrds, CSN, CSN&Y, and Crosby & Nash, as well as solo material. Also in Barnes & Noble, I happened upon a book called "I Was There: Gigs that Changed the World," by Mark Paytress, with features eye-witness accounts of important musical happenings from the '30s, through Elvis through the '90s. They have Isle of Wight with a picture of Joni playing guitar and the caption "Joni Mitchell resplendent in yellow." There is also a caption (?) across the page something along the lines of someone came out before her saying 'This is like a prison camp' or something 'and the singer burst into tears' (referring to Joni). And I can hear my husband in his falsetto voice, "You're acting like a bunch of tourists, man!" Sigh. I can tell you that writing confessional emails take a bit of courage, this I know from experience and I have posted my share of them through the years here for better or worse. I kind of think of them as statements more than emails...declarations of life so to speak. Baring one's soul in public is always painful and hard if you ask me. It's the same whenever I write a song. Even though it's done in private, I know eventually, I will have to stand emotionally naked in front of an audience and sing it as that is what it was created for. I think this is why I love Joni and her music so very much. My goodness, it is mindboggling when I think about some of the things she has been brave enough to share with the rest of us. This is what I know we all have in common here. No matter what our differences, we all have that appreciation for her openess. Oh well.....!!" > >I'm not sure I know what you are saying but I like it! ;-) I guess no-one understood what I was trying to say! I wanted to apologize becasue I'd had an off-list chat with someone about my dissertation, and it ended up on the list which embarrassed me because I think my topic is really generally irrelevant here! Actually, when I >read Oddmund's post, my thoughts were that some of us have been around here >for so long (some almost ten years!) and most all have written on and on >our >Joni confessionals in those early years of the list. If you doubt me, >spend >several days and weeks reading the old archives. But, when we read it from someone who is newer to the >list, I think most of us don't blow it off, but rather think privately, >"yeah there is another one of our tribe." Really. We have ALL been there >;-) And sometimes you don't have anything else to say than just that. But then, you could send a short note to say, thanks for a beautiful post, off-list if it's really short and you don't want to waste list-space. I have to say that I sometimes feel that although I was impressed with what someone said I am embarrassed to write back, because I don't know the person. That's just me being an emotional retard sometimes! Oddmund, I think you'll understand, being a fellow Scandinavian! Anyhow, here is a comparison: when I saw Nick Cave in concert last week, he made people get up from their chairs and approach the stage, and he shook people's hands, and everyone glared at him with admiration, and he smiled back, very paternalistically, and they all seemed to be friends. I would have been too embarrassed. The confessional emails have the same effect: someone opens up their heart, on stage or in an email, but even if it moves me, it's weird to reciprocate because it's a one-way thing. In any case, it seems that a lot of emails are bing read, and there are a lot of lurkers out there who never pick up the courage to write in. We've talked about that before.... I never thanked Sherelle for responding to me once that she reads and appreciates everything that is written here. And now I've lost her email address. So please pass it on...! I'd say lots have to do with the way words can be wispered :-) My daughter really likes it when I sing her the song about the "furry man" (le grincheux qui joue du blues"), it seems she loves to hear me wisper the part: .."propped up in his bed, with his dentures and his leg removed..." go figure it out! **** Moi aussi, Trey. Your mom rocks and so do you. Keep carrying the news! And Evelyne...kids love the darndest things, n'est-ce pas? J'aime bien le Francais....le grincheux qui joue du blues.... lol....et votre histoire, Evelyne! When my sons were little, I used to get them to open their mouths (like an airplane hangar, remember that?) by scat-singing Nagasaki by the Andrews Sisters (covered by ETTB, Smurf!)...hot ginger and dynamite, that's all there is at night....they were so amazed at the silliness that they would open their little mouths, like birds, and I would scoop in the pureed bananas or oatmeal or whatever... And speaking of lullabyes....here's some good new from www.carlysimon.com that I've been meaning to share. It's been in my "draft box" for a few days, so here goes: INTO WHITE - January 2, 2007 Carly has a new album of folk covers and original songs coming out a few days after Christmas. This disc has been described as "a reflective, gorgeous thematic body of work perfect for personal reflection and meditation. With its stripped to the essence production it sounds like nothing out there." Carly adds, "We've discovered towards the end of the recording process that this is very much an album for grownups, as well as children. The album is very, very soothing....it doesn't startle you. It just does nice things to you." Mmmmmm...like Cat Stevens...nice things rule. And encore une fois, some politics (sorry, can't help it!): John Hall In Congress Dear Carly, I am a huge fan and great admirer of your music and also, incidentally, of your politics too. I was very pleased that you took a stand against nuclear power back in the '70s. I wondered, though, if you were aware that your fellow MUSE member, and musical collaborator, John Hall, was elected to Congress on this past (historic!) Tuesday? I was pleased to learn that, as well as to see that the Democrats took both the House and Senate. With love from, Mark - New York, NY Yes, definitely took a stand for John Hall in this election. Gave him financial support and was going to do a concert up on the Vineyard when I was called away. My brother Peter, did it at his house instead. Thank you for asking. Best to you, Carly - 11/12/06 **** Pleasant dreamland, tout le Joni monde. Patti P. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Shopping has everything on your holiday list.
