I absolutely love Joanna Newsom. I saw her perform at the Meltdown festival summer of last year. It was the final night and Patti Smith had dreamt up a night of Jimi Hewndrix tributes that would somehow also pay homage to William Blake. It went on for many hours and to be honest the quality of acts was very variable. The highlights included (i think can't really remember) Jeff Beck, Flea, balanescu quartet , johnny marr with robyn hitchcock, and a waif like woman with a harp singing two Hendrix songs (angel & little wing). That was Joanna Newsom. Low lights, for the record, were Patti herself, squarepusher, yat-Kha ( and i really like yat-kha), There were others. So Newsom comes on stage, i had heard only her name before this, and sits at this huge harp. She says that she arranged the songs for (i think) 12 strings but just before the show started she realised that one of the was broken and that it is a huge ordeal to change the strings so she had to quickly think how to play with 10. Huge applause, She laughs and says it is not nearly as impressive as it sounds. Bought her album the following week and loved it; still listen to it. Ys is unlike anything else that i've heard. Now i probably say this kind of thing all the time, but, jaaaysus, she is amazing. One of the reviews fittingly said that it makes her first album sound like a marketable and chart worthy pop bonanza. I look forward to many years of Joanna Newsom's music. GARRET NP- Joanna Newsom, Inflammatory Writ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2006 17:40:27 -0000 From: "Azeem" Subject: Joanna Newsum njc I'm listening to her new album, Ys, downloaded from Emusic. It's simply stunning. Some of the reviews have praised it so extravagantly that I was slightly wary, especially given the involvement of Van Dyke Parks, who seems to be one of those people routinely described as a genius on very tenuous evidence. However, this record is honestly unlike anything I've ever heard. Her voice is certainly an acquired taste, but it fits perfectly with these singular compositions. There are only five songs, ranging from 7 to 17 minutes. The accompaniment is Newsum's own harp and some dazzling orchestral arrangements from Parks, whose work here is mightily impressive. I always said he was a genius... ;-) Once again, the familiar question: anyone else discovered the amazing Joanna Newsum? She's only 24 and her potential is awesome. Per Lev (Lev Moross Gallery) Joni's Gallery Showing - Green Flag Song will be reviewed in January 2007 Vanity Fair Magazine http://www.vanityfair.com/ and Venice Magazine http://www.venicemag.com/. Asked my sis-in-law if by chance she lived anywhere near this gallery to pick me up a catalog. Turns out she passes it everyday on her way to work!! She wrote me back that she went there and spoke with the Russian Lev himself. Very friendly and accomodating. Asked her (as others have said) if she'd like the catalog (there was the choice of a $1,000 or the $175 copy....still don't know the difference) autographed as he was going to a meeting with her that afternoon. She's been under the weather, not feeling well, and he would bring mine and a bunch of catalogs to her house to sign. She was to come back Friday (yesterday) to pick up the copies. She told me when she went back on Friday..... three of them in the office and the sis-in-law were all looking for my copy. Lev said he knew she had signed mine (as it had my name on it....whoo hoo!). Of course it was the one at the very bottom of the pile! I'm hoping that means she signed-it first before her hand got tired. But how cool that this catalog was actually at her house.....I imagine her sitting at her kitchen table, drinking cranberry juice, signing this!! Well, I'm excited because I've wanted for years to get an actual autograph (of course would have LOVED to meet her like most of you) but I keep missing my chance. I do have a signed lithograph from the concert a few years back............but the autograph was machined. So, I'm celebrating! Tomorrow is also my son's 13th birthday. He's excited because that's the day the Nintendo Wii is coming out. He calls it Wii Day. Unfortunately I never was able to instill an appreciation of Joni into him. I told him he could inherit this book when I passed or I may be buried with it. He told me I should be buried with it! (haha) Then my sis-in-law took it a step farther when I told her the story.........she said it would probably make headlines that I was being buried with the book and Joni would feel obligated to come see me at the wake. Of course...........I'd have "missed" her again!!! Anyways, sis-in-law saw there were some people that requested paragraphs to be signed in their book..................those Joni wouldn't even sign TO and their name. Just her signature. The people that just requested "TO" and their name......got it.........along with Joni's signature. Now......I have inadvertently spread the news about Joni of which I am proud. Sis-in-law said this worked out good this week since her boss is out of town on business..............she could run around easily back & forth to the Gallery and then the post office to mail it off to me. While she was in the gallery.............the lawyer boss called. Asked how the office was doing and business...........then asked her SO WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW. Sis-in-law said, "You won't believe this but.................and proceeded to tell her what she was doing for crazy me. Well....boss got all excited and said, "I love Joni Mitchell". She didn't know anything about the gallery showing and plans to go when she gets back from business trip. Also, without getting into too much detail...............sis-in-law is into the online dating thing. One of her suitors she's yet to meet but has been emailing back and forth.......collects art for his home. Sis-in-law told him the story. And he told her he had no idea Joni Mitchell was a painter. So, there ya go.................Joni education continues and this has brought about another visitor to the gallery. So, I had asked sis-in-law to ask Lev when she went back to pick up my catalog (yeahhhh!) if he knew of any reviews coming out about Joni's showing there at the Gallery. So this is how I got the above information. Now, I'm just waiting for the mail to come! Gratefully, Laura (still dreaming of meeting Joni and even having lunch with Joni.....like Kakki! Oh, and I'd pray I'd be as articulate too.....I'd probably be too tongue tied to even eat...........miraculous!) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2006 17:04:35 +0000 From: missblux@googlemail.com Subject: NJC Toma Waits predictable Hi both..... Thanks for the enlightenment, gentilhommes. But rats...too late for me. I just learned she played in my backyard the other night, and I missed her. For what it's worth, here a review from yesterday's paper. I don't know if it's a "fierce passive aggressive competion" (Touche, Kate! ) like that Christian guy who dissed Cat Stevens and James Taylor all in one review (phoey on him!) or that obnoxious young whippersnapper who dissed CSNY this summer (utter blasphemy!), but here it is, fwiw: Rarity At Toad's: Harpist Joanna Newsom November 17, 2006 By ERIC R. DANTON, Courant Rock Critic There it was, in all its gilded splendor: an honest-to-goodness harp, holding center stage Wednesday night at Toad's Place in New Haven. It's not the sort of instrument you usually see in dingy rock clubs, and neither is the woman who plays it. Joanna Newsom, a wispy 24-year-old from northern California, has carved out a distinct niche in what's often called the "freak-folk" movement. Her songs are full of stream-of-consciousness pastoral imagery, and the musical arrangements on her latest album, "Ys," are dense and eclectic as swelling orchestral parts joust with more traditional folk instruments. She left the orchestra at home for this tour, relying instead on a band of scruffy hipsters to flesh out the songs during her 65-minute set, which mostly comprised a start-to-finish performance of "Ys." The simpler instrumentation benefited the songs by stripping away some of the clutter and allowing them to breathe a bit. That was a good thing: It's difficult music, in that "Ys" almost never relies on traditional song structures and rarely repeats a melodic phrase. Newsom's lyrics came in torrents, as if the confines of a 12- or 16-minute song suite weren't generous enough for the singer to communicate everything she wanted to say. Her voice, demure and almost childlike when she spoke, became a quavery, flighty instrument in song, swooping and cracking with no discernible pattern - think Sandy Denny, if she gargled with glass shards. Newsom started the show alone on stage, stroking the strings on her harp as she performed a pair of songs from her first album, 2004's "The Milk-Eyed Mender." "Bridges and Balloons" was a concise song with a refrain, and "The Book of Right-On" mixed oddball lyrics - "I killed my dinner with karate," she sang - with silvery arpeggios from the harp. After a traditional Scottish ballad, the rest of the band joined her for a 55-minute rendition of all five songs from "Ys." The crowd mostly listened with rapt attention from the rows of folding chairs set up in front of the stage, while late-comers crowded around the edges. Someone toward the back let out a raucous whoop to shatter the stillness that accompanied the end of the lengthy mini-suite "Monkey & Bear," drawing bemused smiles from the musicians. The New York band P.G. Six opened the show with a set of folk-leaning indie-rock songs. Band members seemed to rotate on and off the stage to perform in ensembles of varying sizes. **** Best to all, Patti P. _________________________________________________________________ All-in-one security and maintenance for your PC. I didn't know a lot of the people at the party, but they helped out and I got a chance to talk to Graham Nash, Beverly D'Angelo, Cameron Crowe, Darell Hannah and a few others I probably shouldn't mention -- but suffice to say JM has some cool pals. The lady was crushed with VIP folks and I didn't even get a chance to say hey. But it was cool to see her so happy and with her buds. Been reading about her beauty. She is beautiful, but we all must admit that when someone touches your life as much as she can with her music - when we see her, of course she is beautiful. going to bed, Trey. _________________________________________________________________ Fixing up the home? All the young dudes (I've wanted to do this for years) Carry the news (There you go) Boogaloo dudes (How do you feel) Carry the news Thank you so much for carrying this Joni news. Awesome two nights you had! Like a Joni fairy tale, come real. As the mother of two twenty-something sons, I was particularly touched by your thanks to your Mom. My sons tease me about Joni all the time, and won't admit to liking her, although my younger son's girfriend told me recently that a Joni song came on the radio and Michael sang the whole thing out loud! Ha! I guess songs *are* like tattoos. You have great karma going on now....instant good Karma's gonna get you. I hope you make a lot of money and never quit this crazy scene. Shine on, Trey! And thanks again for sharing the Joni glow. We feel it, for sure. Love and peace, Patti P. ******* Howdy, I was lurkin' and saw someone post a note about those of us who had a Joni encounter at the Gallery thing to post a note. Well, I'll tell ya, I'm Trey, I live in a guest house in Laurel Canyon and am a lifelong Joni fan (thanks, Mom), and I'm a 19 year old male. I am sure you older dudes won't pay a lick of attention to me. I entered all the stuff on my profile if you are into who I am, but I wanted to talk about Joni right now, not me. Heck ya, I was at the Gallery thing Friday night. I had my finger on all things Joni for the last few years, so, heck ya, I knew all about it. I walked in all tall and proud and then lost my balance. I saw people with stars in their eyes and tears to go along with and knew -- I knew my place was found - - -- no t ten minutes from my house. Th e stuff she hang wasn't my stuff. I pal of mine sent me a book about some stuff she hung in her Canada show -- that was better. What's going on with this stuff Joni -- I wouldn't buy it -- but I have no money. I hope she sold some. The stuff in this exhibit was very dang DARK. I dunno if I would go to a party at anyone's house that had that stuff in their living room - but what do I know about art? So, I am hangin' there Friday night and this cool gal comes over and starts chattin me up. I looked up and damn if it's not Joni. She takes me around to see a picture she says she thinks I look like. Although I am intoxed by cheap wine, I agree the dude does look like me. We chat a minute - lots of cool people are all over her - and she said she had to go, but invited me back for the next night party. She even took me over to a guy that asked me my name and put it on a list. What the heck, I showed up the next night. Easy entry since I was listed, but it was a whole different party. High class - it was catered by some famous Chinese restaurant (didn't catch the name), we had nice martinis, fine wine and champagne, and some awesome caviar that would make my Mom blush. Great spread. This was freaking Joni's night --not the low budget night before. Dang, I did it all. I met some cool dudes that were long time fans. " This has to be some sort of joke, I suppose you fall in the " tall slim healthy attractive intelligent" category dont you, and I suppose your saying that everybody that works at Tesco- Wallmart will be the Slave goblin underclass. I take interest in where you work London School of Economics Because some say we have reached this point now, there is almost a underclass now isnt there, and you know the powers that be want to keep it that way as long as possible . In the USA where I live the Stock Market is booming, but there is hardly any Drip down of its benifits to the Middle to lower classes to the out and out poor, all of the profits go to the Genetic Upper Class slim healthy ( appropriate in the USA because 45 million in the USA dont have Medical Insurance) with big penises!!!!! I could be wrong tell me If I am,:- but you seem to be expressing your desires for your class in future times, you know going back to the Uppper classes having slaves, ie Ugly Dwarfs, I find it difficult to understand how you keep your job with comments like " look athletic, and have squarer jaws, deeper voices and bigger penises." in your thesis, My construcive opinion on were your thesis falls down is because in the USA if you follow current trends of skilled workers being laid of more and more, by the year 3000 there will be a ratio of even 70% Dwarfs to the Genetic upper class's 30% at least and accepting that Democracy will still exist, Or are you saying that the Goblins wont be entitled to a vote ???
