Well, I'll tell ya, I'm Trey, I live in a guest house in Laurel Canyon and am a lifelong Joni fan (thanks, Mom), and I'm a 19 year old male. I am sure you older dudes won't pay a lick of attention to me. I entered all the stuff on my profile if you are into who I am, but I wanted to talk about Joni right now, not me. Heck ya, I was at the Gallery thing Friday night. I had my finger on all things Joni for the last few years, so, heck ya, I knew all about it. I walked in all tall and proud and then lost my balance. I saw people with stars in their eyes and tears to go along with and knew -- I knew my place was found -- not ten minutes from my house. The stuff she hang wasn't my stuff. I pal of mine sent me a book about some stuff she hung in her Canada show -- that was better. What's going on with this stuff Joni -- I wouldn't buy it -- but I have no money. I hope she sold some. The stuff in this exhibit was very dang DARK. I dunno if I would go to a party at anyone's house that had that stuff in their living room - but what do I know about art? So, I am hangin' there Friday night and this cool gal comes over and starts chattin me up. I looked up and damn if it's not Joni. She takes me around to see a picture she says she thinks I look like. Although I am intoxed by cheap wine, I agree the dude does look like me. We chat a minute - lots of cool people are all over her - and she said she had to go, but invited me back for the next night party. She even took me over to a guy that asked me my name and put it on a list. What the heck, I showed up the next night. Easy entry since I was listed, but it was a whole different party. High class - it was catered by some famous Chinese restaurant (didn't catch the name), we had nice martinis, fine wine and champagne, and some awesome caviar that would make my Mom blush. Great spread. This was freaking Joni's night --not the low budget night before. Dang, I did it all. I met some cool dudes that were long time fans. I didn't know a lot of the people at the party, but they helped out and I got a chance to talk to Graham Nash, Beverly D'Angelo, Cameron Crowe, Darell Hannah and a few others I probably shouldn't mention -- but suffice to say JM has some cool pals. The lady was crushed with VIP folks and I didn't even get a chance to say hey. But it was cool to see her so happy and with her buds. Been reading about her beauty. She is beautiful, but we all must admit that when someone touches your life as much as she can with her music - when we see her, of course she is beautiful. going to bed, Trey. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2006 11:29:46 +0100 From: "Oddmund Kaarevik" Subject: I noticed ! And I'd like to add my two-cents worth: I think, when Joni was younger (early albums stage) she wasbwithout a doubtbone of the most beautiful girls/women you could ever find, with an air of innocence about her. As she got older (1980's era) I think she retained her beauty but had a more sophisticated look. In more recent years, there's no doubt she's aged (who hasn't) but still retains a certain mature beauty that lots of women her age wish they had. Andb without beating a dead horsebI'll bet she would look even better if she had given up smoking, since I believe that certainly affects one's appearance, especially in the facial area. All this IMHO, of course... It's a combination of physical beauty, which may not necessarily be what today's culture defines as beauty, and that glow that some of you have mentioned - a glow of contentment, or inner peace, or being excited about being alive and still having something to say. I'm not sure what it is but some people just have it, no matter how old they are. Some people look old when they're quite young, while others look young when they're very old and it's hard to figure out how much of that is lucky genes and how much is attitude. I've always found Joni to be extemely beautiful physically, but my kids don't think she is. (They don't know what they're talking about!) During one of my radio stints, one caller requested, no demanded, that I play any track from Joanna Newsom's (then only) album. Not knowing who she is, I looked at allmusic.com and checked the station's music library. Indeed we have her album. So I played "Swansea" on the air. And the strangest thing is, I myself got hooked that I decided to buy her debut "The Milk-Eyed Mender" that very same day. Boy, was I blown away by ALL the tracks. I have heard people lump Victoria Williams, Rickie Lee Jones, Karen Peris and Mary Timony as having the same kind of voices and I am sure that Joanna Newsom certainly belongs to these illustrious list of talented women with distinctive voices. But far from calling Newsom's voice un-lovely, her very intimate style of singing sometimes make you think that she is singing to herself similar to the way outsider artists/singers "sing" their songs. I wish I can expound on the depth of her lyrics but much as I am hooked by any singer/songwriter's lyrics in general, the one thing that grabbed me with such immediacy is Newsom's voice and how it tells a story. And she could be singing in a foreign language for all I know this way of of Bjork's "Gling Glo", but itis really the structure of her songs that almost make me think of folk/art songs that run from Edvard Grieg to Shannon Wright that appeal. I don't have her latest album called "Ys" (pronounced 'ease' according to allmusic.com) but we have that album on our rotation in the station. Joseph in Chapel Hill np: Les Primitifs du Futur Azeem a icrit : I'm listening to her new album, Ys, downloaded from Emusic. It's simply stunning. Some of the reviews have praised it so extravagantly that I was slightly wary, especially given the involvement of Van Dyke Parks, who seems to be one of those people routinely described as a genius on very tenuous evidence. However, this record is honestly unlike anything I've ever heard. Her voice is certainly an acquired taste, but it fits perfectly with these singular compositions. There are only five songs, ranging from 7 to 17 minutes. The accompaniment is Newsum's own harp and some dazzling orchestral arrangements from Parks, whose work here is mightily impressive. I always said he was a genius... ;-) Once again, the familiar question: anyone else discovered the amazing Joanna Newsum? She's only 24 and her potential is awesome. Thrice-13 lashes with a phantom broken guitar-string! Good morning my favorite cackler! Sooooo are you saying Witchiepoos and Ocultist-toos lay stuff on people but not any more than the no fun fundamentalists, etc.? Well, I don't know anybody who does. I do know people who TALK sometimes about sun sign compatibilities, but then blithely jump into the next and nearest likely-seeming "relationship" that presents itself anyway, no matter WHAT the person's sign. Yes, and I've also seen sign-based resentments that happen during such relationships... gotta blame it on something I suppose. One of my friends is a Roman Catholic who I swear is more pious than the Pope. His idea of a good time is to go into a divinity library and pile the most obscure tomes he can find as high to heaven as he possibly can, poring over them in total ecstacy for hours on end. He reportedly got kicked out of a monastic retreat weekend for instructing the good brothers in their devotions. Heh. Cackle. I think this is just the kind of person Roses Blue was written about even though the mysterious devotions are RC. Haven't sung it for awhile, but I've thought of recording a cover version of it sometime on a future album. That and "Pirate of Penance", yo-ho, yo-ho... Cool... go for it! Yeah, but if it happens to anybody's HEART, he or she could be in big trouble. Like an atrial fibrillation perhaps? Oh, I do love this song, honest, but I've always kind of been thinking: "Oh, come now, Joni, dear girl. Surely this Blue Rose Witchie chick and her priestessy little pursuits aren't as bad and scary as all THAT." :-) I didn't get "scary" out of Roses Blue, not as in "boo" scary anyway. It is more of a wake up call song in my opinion. Let's hear it for Nature's Blueprint: the fun & fearless female! You know, with all human embryos being female to start with, and all... Lots of little Roses Blueprints... Really, they aren't exactly all "female to start with." The phenotype during development actually looks more male at one point even for female embryos. Oh, dearest Patti, Many Thanks!!! The Martin Luther King quote is so inspiring... I am just now, in fact, trying to figure something new for this course's Peace Day celebration (yes, I know it's in January but...) [Wait a minute! in Galicia's schools and colleges we celebrate it in January, 30. The only "positive" world I can think of it's Concord (concordia) or even Harmony, Friendship... In short I'm compiling graphic materials for an exhibit about peace (not war scenes, not too much birds, too, he he), and some literary and video resources for promoting them on the Library. Have any of you an idea about a film about Peace... that it doesn't show war? Please? (I'm a little dried out, today...) humm, Milos Forman's Hair... it's maybe a little hard for the youngest (eleven years)... or I'd rather say to their families!
