Much more beautiful in person than the > photos you see of her. Very youthful, animated, and gracious. Howevah..I said almost the same exact words the first time I met her at the taping in '98. Joni absolutely IS much more beautiful in person than photos or film portray. It's amazing. And I loved hearing Kate B. having the same reaction of many of us who have experienced this. Hope some more will report a few of them, ahem ;0) Anyway, Joni's wit seems to be sharper than ever. Quick on the riposte no matter what the subject, from what I heard. It kind of amazed me considering that she was under the scope and onslaught of people. I would have gone into ADD mode under the same circumstances. As it was she did retreat to her smoking sanctuary for a good part of the night, which I'm sure helped bring her back in balance a bit ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2006 00:30:04 -0800 (PST) From: Nuriel Tobias Subject: Re: Kakki's visit with Joni (now joni again) Thanks for the clip, Catherine. I'm a link-freak, so please keep them coming:) The girls said that Joni is much more beautiful in person and that she's very youthful. As for Joni's beauty - Can you imagine the very same gifted Joni (with the very same artistic quality) only with a slight change of being "ugly", managing to start a career, appealing both to guys like Crosby and the industry that followed and the smaller crowd she had when she was a young woman? I guess we would say something like, sure, she was brilliant enough to make even if she had a moustache, or that she was always too honorable to bend to that part of the game and always above it, (and in our case, now, many years since then, we would probably say that we're too hooked on her to even care about her looks that much) - but is that really the case? We often do tend to look at this beauty-compulsive-disorder of the biz as a post-modern syndrome of these times and this era, when in fact it was always there, and in Joni's case it's an hypothetical question, but at the same time, just looking around you, it may be answered, and it's one of those answers that are still "in the closet", and as absurd at it may seem, one must be really honest and brave to give it. As for the youthful part, i don't know when this "you look so much younger" thing that is often said to older ladies (and gents) as some sort of a blessed-mantra has taken over the world, but why should older people look younger anyway and how come that even those who go for natural in every other aspect still view aging as a bad sign and wrinkles of an older body as a problem? Looking at Joni's self-portraits, the paintings that she used as album sleeves for her later works, i sense that she's a bit torn between youth-aging/beauty-oddness and undecided herslef, and even though painting yourself allows you to present yourself in any way you wish to, the woman i see on the sleeves of TTT, TI, The Beginning of Survival and Dreamland, is older and proud about it and sometimes, as mentioned in one of this week posts, isn't too pretty at all, and that's the way Joni the painter chose it to be and that's her brutally honest art. Did anyone purchase one at the exhibit?....they sure are more expensive than the Voices art book ($175.00). Are they nice?" They are nice but very pricey. I bought one and it will be signed by Joni and mailed to me. With shipping and handling and tax it came to around $200.00. What interested me was the rarity (limited edition) and the thought that there may not be too many more chances to acquire something like it. It is not like a usual catalog but is rather arty. It is around 12 inches high and 5 or 6 inches wide with what looks like a corrugated cardboard cover. I did not have too much of a chnce to peruse it because the crush of people was just stifling but inside appears to be reproductions of many of the works at the show and pages with some of the lyrics to her new songs. There may be other surprises inside but it was nearly impossible to spend time to look while lining up to place an order. I really feel the need to go back again to view the exhibit. It was so difficult to really take it all in that night. I do think her work was very ambitious and interesting in part because of her involvement working with new media. But it needs better study than one whirlwind night. I so anticipate the new music. I have a feeling it may be just awesome. It has been nearly ten years since we have heard original lyrics from her so there is lots to look forward to. Sooooo are you saying Witchiepoos and Ocultist-toos lay stuff on people but not any more than the no fun fundamentalists, etc.? Well, I don't know anybody who does. I do know people who TALK sometimes about sun sign compatibilities, but then blithely jump into the next and nearest likely-seeming "relationship" that presents itself anyway, no matter WHAT the person's sign. Yes, and I've also seen sign-based resentments that happen during such relationships... gotta blame it on something I suppose. One of my friends is a Roman Catholic who I swear is more pious than the Pope. His idea of a good time is to go into a divinity library and pile the most obscure tomes he can find as high to heaven as he possibly can, poring over them in total ecstacy for hours on end. He reportedly got kicked out of a monastic retreat weekend for instructing the good brothers in their devotions. Heh. Cackle. I think this is just the kind of person Roses Blue was written about even though the mysterious devotions are RC. Haven't sung it for awhile, but I've thought of recording a cover version of it sometime on a future album. That and "Pirate of Penance", yo-ho, yo-ho... Cool... go for it! Yeah, but if it happens to anybody's HEART, he or she could be in big trouble. Like an atrial fibrillation perhaps? Oh, I do love this song, honest, but I've always kind of been thinking: "Oh, come now, Joni, dear girl. Surely this Blue Rose Witchie chick and her priestessy little pursuits aren't as bad and scary as all THAT." :-) I didn't get "scary" out of Roses Blue, not as in "boo" scary anyway. It is more of a wake up call song in my opinion. Let's hear it for Nature's Blueprint: the fun & fearless female! You know, with all human embryos being female to start with, and all... Lots of little Roses Blueprints... Really, they aren't exactly all "female to start with." The phenotype during development actually looks more male at one point even for female embryos. My goodness! I feel like I was right there with you when you were discussing camera techniques! Oh, I hope you will savor this experience always! I didn't get to see the cell phone picture but I'm still esctactic to read about your experience! Wonderful! Sherelle From: Helena Ruffin I wish I was in this pic with Joni...but there she was, inches away, so I used my cell phone and shot. We went to her gallery opening, "green flag song" last Friday. Joni's a bit of a recluse so having her come to this show was a rare treat for her fans. She looked like a typical Brentwood housewife. Dressed in a Miyake blouse paired with jeans, some simple jewelry, and a designer backpack. Wish the pix were better but so goes the cell phone picture phone! Before the mob started to get overwhelming for her, we got a chance to talk briefly with her about her art and the recent win by the Democrats in the elections. She said to Rose, pointing her finger "and did you see Bush sitting there like a little boy next to Nancy Pelosi, he knew he was cooked." She and Rose bantered back and forth a bit, then I asked her about her art. I asked her about her technique with the camera and she dragged me over to one of her pieces to show me some details in the art. I loved it. Then I remarked to her that "the music wasn't too bad either" (her anti-war songs) and she realized it was her music and said, "Sorry, but I've got to go they're playing the wrong music! I wanted them to play the Mills Brothers and Marlene Dietrich". Then she disappeared in the crowd into a back room, and held court back there the rest of the night. The CD is about 44 minutes total, not too shabby by most standards. The review on allmusic.com explains the brevity of it: "That doesn't mean that this release is faultless. The main complaint that can be lodged against Crazy Horse at the Fillmore 1970 is that it's not a complete representation of a 1970 show. During this tour, Neil opened with an acoustic set and then had Crazy Horse come out for an electric set; the acoustic is not here, but most of the electric is, with only "Cinnamon Girl" absent - and it's absent because there was not existing high-quality tape for it, unlike the rest of music that's featured here. So, it comes down to a matter of taste: for hardcore fans used to bootleg quality, they may lament the lack of a full show, but for those who want the best of this legendary stay at the Fillmore East in the best possible audio quality (including a DVD of the show, where the main program plays to photos of the band from the tour), that's what this set gives you. And in doing so, it gives a good indication that as Neil slowly rolls out the archives, he'll emphasize quality over completeness for better and for worse." Norma Jean PS I heard Neil wrote "Stupid Girl," about Joni and if he did, well, I consider myself one of the "Stupid Girls." Neil's got very little inkling about women in general...and that's when he becomes one of most stupidest boys I've ever seen, and he projects it out on us instead of himself. I love Neil somehow, by the way and that makes me one of his girls! " You're my girl, la, la, la, la, la la, la, la..." As far as Joni being a beauty? When I think of Joni just on solely her appearance ..I think of her not looking so ordinary. She certainly doesn't have those classic beauty features.....which bore me..the late Grace of Monaco comes to mind. I think of the pretty faces of today...again ..boring to me...I don't look twice...we all know them...in the entertainment news daily...of them .... "pretty as pretty does". I think Joni has one of the most interesting faces..and so NOT ordinary...she fits her music. I think of the documentary ..FACES....in one segment they showed babies reaction to pictures of faces.. the "prettier" the face.. the more favorable reaction from the baby. Or a dimensional mold of what is considered a beautiful face..that it seems all beautiful faces fit those exact dimensions. Now that is scary to me. ....only a fraction off... this way or that way...and your NOT considered a pretty person. "beautiful as a foot".....forgot the artist here... anyway...I saw Annie Lebowitz (sp?) recently...now definitely not your classic beauty....but what she had to say was so interesting...and the way she presented herself....I found everything about her very attactive. Not in under the covers sort of way either...just her whole persona. What am I trying to say..she became pretty in her OWN way. I guess there are more important things to rail against..not that I'm railing...but just another pretty face ..I turn off as quiclly as I can change the TV remote. There she is among 1971 classics by Bowie, T. Rex, Al Green, Lennon, Grateful Dead, CCR, Aretha, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Kinks, etc. Worth the 14 bucks... Frank I think we mentioned that briefly here a while back (Starbucks was stocking Blue at the same time in celebration of the company's founding year, 1971). I picked up a copy of the 35th anniversary disc. It has some fine stuff on it, but overall I find it a difficult listen. I can't quite articulate it, but there's something about rock music of of the very early 70s that I just don't care for....too bluesy or something for my liking. Much of it sounds like it emerged from a bad acid trip (and perhaps it did). But kudos to Starbucks for re-issuing the old stuff.
