I guess so far the reviews are not that great. They quote this from a Rolling Stone article: "Back in the 70s, Cat Stevens was a bearded guy who tagged pop-friendly folkie melodies to barely sufferable hippie-isms" I know the dangers of judging words without understanding the context, but DANG, is that one sentence HARSH, or what? Is that all Cat Stevens was??? There are still about 4 of his albums that I think are really great - whoever wrote that sentence seems to have reduced him to smarm status. I guess I should read the whole article. But my kneejerk says he was more important and substantial than that. I would reserve a sentence like that quote for, say, Bread, or Seals and Croft. :( I think Cat Stevens was on a whole 'nuther level. You know what would REALLY freak me out? if the person who wrote that sentence is a woman. I know alot of males didn't like Cat Stevens, cuz he was so pretty and all. Anybody heard the album? We used to play together in Cosmic Charlie in 2001 when I filled in for a month or so on keyboards(Bob Muller saw us in Greenville at the Handlebar.) I told him how sad I was about Elissa passing away and that I had heard about her from a friend in New York (Patrick.) He said Breathlanes is doing well and that Cosmic Charlet opened up for Tom Constanten (sp?) recently. Then the amazing part. When I did a short tour with Cosmic Charlie, we sang in Wilmington ,NC and stayed at a beach house that night. I inadvertantly left a pair of boots there and didn't realize it till we were on the road towards Raleigh or Greenville or somewhere. I never though I'd see them again. Well apparently, the girl who had the beach house showed up at a Cosmic Charlie show recently, and told them, "I have your keyboard players boots!" So they took them and have been holding on to them for awhile, planning to contact me. So when I ran into John, I got his number and he's going to mail them to me from Athens. I had thought for 5 years that I would never see them again...then I just happen to run into my friend at Bob Weir and soon my boots and I will be reunited. The show was awesome by the way! It started out, kind of slow then got into a really good jam with "Row, Jimmy Row" and "Foolish Heart". The second set was very spacy but good with "Dark Star" into "Going Down the Road", "Saint of Circumstance/Lost Sailor", and an encore of "Brokedown". I think it's unnecessarily harsh. I'm guessing the RS writer is very young (Oh, very young) and thinks everything from back then was "hippie-isms." I think Cat at his best was much better than that, but that he was losing it as time went on. I kind of lost interest at "Catch bull at four". Did you catch the name of the RS writer? I just can't imagine Cat Stevens' "Foreigner," categorized as tag-friendly folk melodies. That album played on my turntable for at least a year non-stop, second only to Joni's, "Blue," which probably played for about three years straight. My mother would wail every morning and night just about, "I'm dreaming and breathing and singing Joni Mitchell and Cat Stevens and Maria Muldau, along with her camel and Sheik out in the Arabian desert...stop already!!" Those are nearly impossible (for me) to find since I search on the English song titles. Such was the case with Oddmund's discovery of Carey (recorded in Norwegian as "Ottar") by Kari Bremnes. < i'll bet she will, soon, since she just married joni's ex!> And I'll bet you're right - will keep my eyes peeled, as painful as that sounds. I wonder if it relates to the size of the file? But yes, i did register and yes, I've been getting invitations to get better service by paying. I realize we all need to make a living and these guys can't run their business without raising money to pay for it, but their site is already loaded with ads and pop-ups and you need to be careful not to click in the wrong place, and now that I've upgraded to XP, the pop-ups are rarely a problem. I'm sure they'll promise you ad-free pages by paying, but then again, who knows? Isn't advertising supposed to pay the cost of running these sites? I think I ended up registering twice, under two different e-mail addresses, so I get twice the junk! thanks to Ron for uploading. I'll try to get this when I get home. Notre Bene wrote: I'm getting a bit concerned about safety and privacy on this list; I was wondering what the rest of you think about this. *** Je comprends. I have some thoughts on this. I read your post this morning but had no time to address it until now. Funny/synchronicity thing though, on my way into work this morning I heard this on the radio: "Paranoia strikes deep Into your life it will creep It starts when you're always afraid You step out of line, the man come and take you away...." And of course I have a Joni Tic: maybe it's paranoia, maybe it's sensitivity. I try to be aware when I post that the whole world can read what I write. I don't *always* remember that when I'm in the heat of the moment, but I do try. I always (I hope) err on the side of kindness. For instance: this summer I went to that "Hippiefest" concert. (It was fun...esp. when we got to do the "Fish cheer", but yeah, a lot of it was cheesy.). I was really looking forward to hearing an old singer who does one of my very favorite peace songs. Well, he/she was AWFUL! So out of tune, it was painful. (I'm not a musican, so if it was painful for me, it must have been really painful for people with good ears.) I wanted to tell you guys about it, but never did, because I knew that the singer was devastated by his/her performance (he/she left the stage in tears) and I would never want it to get out that someone dissed him/her. We're all human and none of us are perfect. And then there's the political stuff I write about. Well, surely I'm already on the "no-fly list" and headed for Guantanamo so I don't care about that, but I do try to protect my candidates. Par example, when I wrote my crazy "Madwoman of Mansfield" posts, I had Bonnie & Sippie in my head warning me: "Woman be wise, keep your mouth shut, don't advertise your man", so I did not use real names. To wit: Jed Dumont and Joe Creeperman. But that's all over now, so I will go on record with a good political cartoon, with Patrick especially in mind: http://blogs.courant.com/bob_englehart/ Hey, Joni said: "If you're feeling contempt, well then you tell it." I don't usually feel contempt, but in this case, I just have to to tell it. Good for the soul, I guess. Pleasant dreams, tout le Joni monde! We went to her gallery opening, "green flag song" last Friday. Joni's a bit of a recluse so having her come to this show was a rare treat for her fans. She looked like a typical Brentwood housewife. Dressed in a Miyake blouse paired with jeans, some simple jewelry, and a designer backpack. Wish the pix were better but so goes the cell phone picture phone! Before the mob started to get overwhelming for her, we got a chance to talk briefly with her about her art and the recent win by the Democrats in the elections. She said to Rose, pointing her finger "and did you see Bush sitting there like a little boy next to Nancy Pelosi, he knew he was cooked." She and Rose bantered back and forth a bit, then I asked her about her art. I asked her about her technique with the camera and she dragged me over to one of her pieces to show me some details in the art. I loved it. Then I remarked to her that "the music wasn't too bad either" (her anti-war songs) and she realized it was her music and said, "Sorry, but I've got to go they're playing the wrong music! I wanted them to play the Mills Brothers and Marlene Dietrich". Then she disappeared in the crowd into a back room, and held court back there the rest of the night. If you have a chance to see the show, you must.
