WARNING: POLITICAL CONTENT Dear Joniamigos: I wrote the following almost a month ago and never sent it. It's just a first draft and I meant to revise it but never did, and now here it is Election Day so I guess I'll just let it rip as is. If there is no good reception for my loquacious blathering, just tune me out/delete me, or go at the least to the You-Tube link to see and hear the energy and excitement of the crowd generated by our anti-war candidate and General Clark. There is music, too. Music, sweet music, there is music everywhere.... - --------- Voila: Okay, loves, I promised to get back to you about the Lamont rally, so here we go. Love is a story told. Deep breath. It was AWESOME! I was in a tizzy all morning at work. My friend Chris (he's the Spanish professor who coined the term J-RA -- Joni-related absence) came in and we were jumping up and down with excitement. I dumped all my peace and Joni and Lamont pins on my desk....some had been in the little Cassy pouch....and everyone was grabbing them to borrow them. I decided to wear the "pro-soldier/pro-peace" codepink one, a Lamont one, and one that says "War is the real enemy". I had to take my JMDL Carnegie Hall one off because it was just too busy. Sorry, Cassy and Joni! I felt so disloyal! I then realized I should bring my "Give Peace a Vote" petition so I tried taping a pen to the clipboard and the masking tape tangled, it was sticky and not black but clear and I couldn't cut it off because I was so excited. Finally I got it right. People who were asking me work-related questions quickly realized I was in another zone so they pretty much left me alone. N., my dept. head, who was to join me for the personal meet-up, was as excited as I was, and we decided to head on over to the rally with Chris. As we approched the Student Union we could hear music. Cool! I was hoping they'd have music. "Life is a highway" was playing, and then Bruce's "Born in the U.S.A." and then "Eye of the Tiger". I saw Katie the campaign manager and she introduced me to this sweet old lady named Claire (who was all decked out in her Lamont t-shirt and pins) and asked me to stick with her, as her eyesight was bad. No problem. I love old people. Claire was cool! Then our secretary L. arrived, and my friend L. the Assoc. Registrar, A. from the Dean's Office, M. the catalogue editor and her husband R. the Com. Sci. prof, and you know there may be more. I was in high gear and hugged everyone who came by and now I'm embarrassed to go to work tomorrow! These people have never seen this side of me (all the spirit that's inside of me). They were throwing t-shirts to the crowd and I caught one. When Neil's "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" came on I totally lost it. "Neil Young!" I whooped, and started dancing and swinging the t-shirt in circles high over my head. Still waiting for the call on my cell about meeting Ned....anticipation...then someone said that Katie was looking for me. I found her and she told me to stand at the end of the barricade, and that's when I would meet Ned and Wes when they came out of the Student Union. Anticipation! Well, it was crazy with all the people dancing and stuff and people coming up to say hello. Finally Ned and Wes strode toward the crowd. You'll see in the video. Strides, that's what they took. Ned came up and shook my hand and patted me on the back and all I could say was: "Welcome to UConn. We're so glad you are here!" Wes got approached by others so I didn't get to shake his hand then. I raced back to my place behind the barricade, pushing people gently out of my way. They were probably thinking "Who the hell does she think SHE is, Kitty Wells?" but when I'm in the zone (like when I pushed my way up to the stage at the New Haven Coliseum to shake Joni's hand) I don't care, which is weird, because normally I am extremely polite and not pushy at all. Whatever. I found my place w/ my friends and my new friend Claire and it was then that I got to shake hands with Wes. I mean, GENERAL Wesley Clark. I already told you about the electricity I felt from him. Everyone was hooting and hollering and it was a gas! And it was You-Tubed! Here is how I found out, Friday night, from two friends: Rick: Holy crap! DailyKos.com has a video of the Lamont/Clark rally at UConn! It's also on YouTube.com. It's probably up on his web site, too. I didn't see you, Patti. But the resolution kinda sucks, so maybe I did and didn't know it. Eric: I SAW you Patti!!!! At about 33-39secs into the clip I saw you shake Ned's hand! Awesome! Okay, ya wanna come up to the rally? I remember straining to see Paz et famille on the Dave Matthews concert video, and now I'm doing the same for myself. Yeah, at 33-39 or so seconds on the video, I'm shaking Ned's hand....and then later I am in the front, just behind Claire in the bright green jacket and red hat...she is leaning over the barricade a lot....to her right is my friend Chris is in the dark leather jacket and light blue shirt....kinda tall. The stoopid photographers kept blocking us....the big one in the khaki jacket and light blue shirt, and the guy in the white shirt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEyaIFbZ188&eurl= What you don't see in the video (it's not the whole rally) is General Clark saying that John Murtha is a hero. Yes he is. General Clark has a very commanding presence, IMO. But I suppose that is expected from generals, n'est-ce pas? ; ) He also said that Bush says "stay the course....but how can you stay the course when he drove us into a ditch?" (TIC! He drove us into a ditch, that son of b#$%@!) - ------------- Okay, well I hope you enjoyed the You-Tube and that it gives you a little oomphy pump-it-upness a la Elvis Costello/inspiration for today. I will be at the polls most of the day. My man is down by 12 points but we can't give up. At least the rest of the country is lookin' pretty good....and perhaps we wil have our first-ever woman Speaker of the House? Woo hoo! We've come a long way, babies! And remember what General Wesley Clark said: "You've got to DRAG people out there on November the 7th!" Love and peace, Patti P., takin' it to the streets P.S. Happy Birthday, Joni! I wish I could listen to you all day today but maybe, just maybe, some of your lyrics will pop into my head. ; ) _________________________________________________________________ Stay in touch with old friends and meet new ones with Windows Live Spaces http://clk.atdmt.com/MSN/go/msnnkwsp0070000001msn/direct/01/?href=http://spaces.live.com/spacesapi.aspx?wx_action=create&wx_url=/friends.aspx&mkt=en-us ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2006 21:51:41 EST From: BRIANASYMES@aol.com Subject: Joni on you tube Hello All I have been lurking for almost a year now. How is New England > Love?? Don't know about New England, Michael, but Massachusetts is doing fine, thank you, and I am up later than usual watching the election results. The great news is, after 16 years of mostly bad (post Bill Weld) republican governors, the tide has turned - -- with some firsts. For example, Deval Patrick was elected the state's first black governor (and the country's second). Patrick beat Kerry Healy, a woman who is the lt. guv in the Romney administration. Surprise, surprise . . . she ran a filthy campaign, which is becoming somewhat of a republican trademark. We also have our first ever female attorney general. And speaking of Kennedy, he won again even though he has never received my vote because -- no matter how much I like their politics -- I have a problem with voting for people who commit manslaughter and/or leave women to die in submerged cars while the run off and try to cover up. That should be the extent of my political posts for the next few months, unless you pin me in a corner and won't take 'no'.
