They are so musically malleable as to be performed in any way an artist deem to perform them. Nellie can be sarcastically witty in her songs yet those songs can be sung straight and have a completely different meaning than Nellie intended them. I know it's hard to imagine such an unlikely scenario happening in today's world, but hey, it's only opera -- it's not supposed to be realistic, just enjoyable to listen to...! The historical context for the storyline of this opera is indeed based on fact. Historians who have studied the reign of King Sebastian I of Portugal say that he had an obsession with jousting and horseback riding -- to which he devoted much of his time, at the expense of leading the country -- that was partly due to his physical and emotional problems, and partly to reassure himself about his own masculinity. At a young age this ill-fated King was constantly taking risks that put his life in danger, and there is evidence to suggest that he was suicidal. This death wish, combined with poor leadership skills, may well have underlain his determination to involve his country in a futile invasion of a Muslim nation. Against this realistic historical backdrop, here's how the story unfolds: * As the opera begins, the King's heavily armored soldiers are preparing to sail off to war against the Muslims, cheered on by the loyal citizenry. * The King grants a stay of execution for a foreign-born Muslim; he has her deported instead. * Her gratitude, while sincere and unflinching, will ultimately prove to be her undoing. * The ensuing war causes heavy losses to both the King's army and the Muslims. * In the midst of defeat, one of the King's devoted lieutenants takes responsibility for the King's mistakes, allowing the King to get off without further penalty. * On the home front, the King is accused of grossly misrepresenting himself and his intentions. He is accused of treason, and the people cry out for his death. * Even the all-powerful church finds his deeds unforgivable, and its leaders turn against him. * The love of a devoted woman brings his only chance of redemption, as she offers herself as a sacrifice so that her beloved King might be spared, but her oath of veracity about the his legitimacy is considered blasphemous. * The King's accusers are undeterred, and his fate is doomed. Even if this cautionary tale of political deception and subsequent fall from grace, set against the backdrop of an unnecessary war in a foreign land, orchestrated by a misguided leader as a means of exerting his power and demonstrating masculinity, with loyal lieutenants willingly sacrificing themselves for their leader's mistakes, and female love interests paying the ultimate price for their devotion at the hands of an all-powerful church establishment has no real relevance or corresponding lessons to be learned in today's political climate, at least you can enjoy the fabulous music and diva performances....!! ;-p Dom Sebastian of Portugal, circa 1578 2) For the music lovers: Gaetano Donizetti's last opera, which premiered in Paris in 1843, will be faithfully performed by the Opera Orchestra of New York, led by Eve Queler. Singing in front of me and some of my fellow members of the NYC Gay Men's Chorus will be a cast of highly acclaimed opera stars, including: a) Mezzo-soprano Vesselina Kasarova, in the role of Zayda, will be making her only NYC appearance for 2006-07. Born in Bulgaria, and accomplished on the piano, Kasarova has received rave reviews around the world, and has been hailed by The New York Times as "arguably the most distinctive voice in opera today" Dom Sebastian, like Tosca, is one of the few operas that have only one female lead, but Kasarova is more than up to the task. b) Tenor Dmitry Korchak as Dom Sebastian. When he hits a high D at the close of the first act you'll understand why this role has always been a favorite with operatic tenors, from Caruso to Pavarotti. This adorable Russian will also display his skills of "heightening emotion through intensely quiet delivery, as well as a vibrant, dynamic dimension" that were in evidenced in a recent performance at Royal Festival Hall in London. Never. Never. In Dixie but not >deep >down enough I suppose. No coast. Just a bunch of hills and billies who >wouldn't be known if there hadn't been a white house. I'm sorry you have never seen Joni! I saw her six times, but that Montreal concert was something else. I don't have time to tell you about it right now (porous with Election Day Eve fever), but I do have to say that, in quickly clicking through the new site (Kudos Les and company -- it's beautiful!), I went to the appearances page and lo and behold, there was an article about that concert at Place des Nations (August 4, 1974)! I have never been able to confirm that that concert actually happened. I thought maybe it was just a dream I had! Did the old page have links to articles about appearances? If so, I never saw that feature before. So, that was a big thrill for me today. But one picture with that article was NOT what Joni was wearing. I remember THAT well, because I actually have three pictures of Joni from that concert, taken w/ my Canon FTB and a telephoto lens. They're not the best quality, but I'd be happy to send them to you, Les, if you could put them up somewhere. There's one of Joni at the piano, and two of her singing, one w/ Tom Scott next to her. She is wearing whitish jeans and an apricot/peachy-colored top. Just give me some. I feel like I'm losing mine! Yes, Kate. I agree. In an April 1997 interview, Joni says: "I didn't have a penny. I had no money for diapers, or a room to take her to. There was no career on the horizon". She also indicates that Kilauren's pre-birth days were very much the same. That's one of the reasons i also started thinking that the window shopping in the rain lyric was more about being unable to buy things and simply staring at all the pretty things she couldn't afford. We often think about dark moods in Joni's lyrics as romantic heartbreaks and other love pains and sad relationship issues as if the only pain in one's life is caused by love. And yes, in many songs that's the case and it's that "rich peoples' troubles" thing as Joni calls it, but sometimes it's not love caused misery that she's singing about, though i wouldn't mind living in a world where the only problems were caused by ex-lovers and rainy mondays.
