"The Pink Dress Concert" was actually titled, "Joni Mitchell Sings Joni Mitchell" from the BBC's In Concert series October 9, 1970. I do have this concert on disc but I believe it's an abridged version. On the DVD, Woman of Heart and Mind, there is some footage that is not included on this version. It was the clip of Blue that made me desperate to get a copy of this but, unfortunately, Blue is not included. There are 7 songs on my version; 1. Chelsea Morning 2. Cactus Tree 3. My Old Man 4. For Free 5. California 6. Big Yellow Taxi 7. Both Sides, Now I think it is an mpg file so I could upload it to yousendit.com if you like. This is Mitchells first public showing of her artwork since her retrospective at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2000, and the first exhibition Mitchell has created on a single motif. Best known as a vastly popular and influential singer and songwriter whose blend of folk, rock, jazz, and classical music helped to shape both, her own, and subsequent generations of musicians and audiences, Canadian-born Joni Mitchell has always been an artist. She attended the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary before moving to Toronto, and then the United States, to follow a musical career. Like other major musicians of our time (such as John Lennon, David Byrne, Miles Davis and Herb Alpert), Mitchells visual sensitivity informs her musical output, and vice versa. The exhibition Green Flag Song, with its ruminations on war, politics, and the power of images, is based in part on Mitchells 1985 song The Beat of Black Wings, but promises in turn to lead Mitchell to further musical, artistic, and even theatrical creation. The sixty panels comprising Green Flag Song grew out of an experimental series of photographs Mitchell began taking about a year ago, photographs made with a camera and taken off of a malfunctioning television set. The images, transferred to canvas, are of current events, historical events, and fictional events all of which interrelate both thematically (through war and ritual) and visually (through their green cast and negative reversal of light and shadow). Very different from Mitchells previous paintings of figures and landscapes, best known from their appearances on her album covers, the panels of Green Flag Song nevertheless continue to address major moral and political issues in a highly distinctive, personalized voice. The current series grew out of Mitchells interaction with gallerist and printer Lev Moross, who has known Mitchell and done printing work for her for several years and with whom Mitchell has maintained a fruitful dialogue about contemporary art and life. Green Flag Song is to be the first of a number of such series, in which Mitchell intends to address a wide array of topics, from modern diplomacy to Shakespeare, and to expand upon her experimentations with various techniques. Most immediately, images from Green Flag Song will comprise the centerpiece of the dicor for a ballet based on her music, choreographed by Jean Grand-Mantre for his Alberta Ballet Company, to premiere in Calgary on February 8th, 2007. A catalogue to "Green Flag Song," with an essay by Peter Frank, accompanies the exhibition and is available for purchase. Beneath the Underdog was published in 1971, and Joni did not enter Minguss life until his very last months most of 1978, I believe so his autobiography precedes their relationship. Heres what Amazon.com says about the book: A wild, lyrical, and anguished autobiography, in which Charles Mingus pays short shrift to the facts but plunges to the very bottom of his psyche, coming up for air only when it pleases him. He takes the reader through his childhood in Watts, his musical education by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Charlie Parker, and his prodigious appetites--intellectual, culinary, and sexual. The book is a jumble, but a glorious one, by a certified American genius. Theres a lot of information in the archives at www.JoniMitchell.com about the making of Mingus, the album, and how the collaboration between Joni & Charles came about which Joni had to take over completely, really, as Charles became more and more ill. Charlie died on Jan 5, 1979, and Mingus was released later that year. And, yes, I too appreciate the work Les and so many others have put into the monumental Joni website! His contribution to the Cohen tribute, I'm Your Man, is noteworthy. Sounding suitably sloshed and slightly off key, his delivery on I'm Your Man is intense and gritty. In contrast, his interpretation of Suzanne is soaring and enchanting. This brings me to another topic, from the same album - Teddy Thompson. Has he been discussed much here?
