The raves on the back were obviously attractive too, and the subject matter as described sounded interesting. Well, as it turned out, it was one of only two novels that has moved me to tears (the other being Sebastian Faulks's Birdsong). I wouldn't say he's a sublimely gifted writer, but he's clean and clear; his immense talent lies, for me, in his characterisations and in the slow, painstaking build-up of little details that make the characters come to life and become more fully rounded, to the extent that the reader really *cares* about them. The resolution thus felt like it had been properly *earned* and was therefore all the more moving. I didn't rate She's Come Undone quite as highly, though I still think it's great. I lent it to a new friend as I thought it might speak to her. What she hadn't told me yet was that she had actually been morbidly obese, just like the main character, and had come through the other side. She gave Wally Lamb high marks for describing her condition realistically. The book you mention sounds fascinating, and I will certainly look out for it. Problem is: IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!!!! It didn't work in the bible and it doesn't work in real life. People become "good" through love: attention, understanding, respect, safety, insight, patience, and role modeling. Almost all people can be healed and come to live loving, constructive lives." Thanks for your email ... It seems that insight is only ever gained the hard way? I want to add that it is remarkable how many artists and scientists and other 'great' people whose work has influenced so many people have been walking in and out of prisons and mental institutions, some with nervous breakdowns, some having committed very serious crimes. Well, and that I can see why some people may have doubts on the death penalty issue. I can only say that when you live in a country that doesn't have it, countries with it seem scary and barbaric. I think the bottom line is that murder is considered the most base crime, so to see that a country has an institution that legally murders its own citizens makes you think that some things in that country are governed by very basic instincts. Plus, perhaps, that they lack some fundamental idea about respecting each individual, even the most aberrant. The idea that we are in this together. What confuses me about the US is that it seems to me that it is the same section of the population which is on the one hand anti-abortionist and fundamentally Christian and on the other pro-death penalty. " It sounds like it might have been one of my emails. No, in a sense, I don't think the number is exaggerated - I think that many cases are not reported, because people live in denial. I think it's part of the trauma for many children who are being abused for years, and responsible adults close their eyes or refuse to understand. I wonder if it's actually a consequence of how parents naturally don't think of their kids in a sexual way. What I am saying is that somehow, the focus on pedophilia in the public debate has had two negative side-effects: first of all I wonder if all the talk about pedophilia has in fact made many pedophiles come out of the closet, and secondly what I was saying in my email, was that it has made many people see pedophilia where there was nothing. The consequences for wrongly accused adults must be devastating, and the consequences for how adults interact physically with children are noticeable. " We have web sites here in, I think, most states where you can enter your zip code and see the names, addresses and crimes of convicted child sex offenders living in your neighborhood. The number is very high IMO. I know two women who were abused as teenagers by a stepfather and one man who was abused as a teenager by an older female camp counselor. These people are permanently damaged by their experiences and nothing has helped them heal and move on. It is very tragic." I completely agree. My friend told me after we had grown up that her step-father had attempted all kinds of things with her, and it's not like my reaction was 'poor old man, he was probably abused himself and couldn't help himself' - I was furious for her. I don't even want to think of how it affects you. Again, her psychologist mother didn't notice. They see it where it isn't and they don't see it when it's there... As someone else has already mentioned, you can get a "pdf convertor" program which is freely available from the internet (as long as you don't use it for commercial reasons, then you need to buy it). I don't know how it works from Powerpoint, but for a Word document, once the convertor is installed, you press the "PRINT" option and then you put that convertor program where the printer details are asked for, and that's how the text gets converted. You can then "save as" as you like. But if this does not work, there is also a totally different way of doing it. Since a pdf document is basically like a photo, you can scan the document into your computer, or get it done somewhere such as at a photoshop (and put on disk) if you don't have a scanner. That will also create a pdf document. I hope this helps! Life is not easy for just about anyone, least of all me. And excuse me for pointing out the obvious but hey, drug addicts made a CHOICE that made their lives not be so easy. Do not dare to compare me with someone who chose to do drugs and then became addicted to them. It's great that people are in recovery and have turned their lives around, but the responsibility for their addiction lies at their feet, and their feet only. How dare you say my life is easy because I chose not to do drugs. And how dare you say I don't have wisdom or compassion just b/c I don't think that we should stand by while people commit crimes, and then continue to give them better than they gave. I have a great compassion for many things, which you have no way of knowing, as you don't know me. It actually seems very different to me....It is the "arm chair liberals" who have the easy lives and try to present themselves as so compassionate...but of course from a distance. If you think prisoners deserve so much compassion, go to the prisons and try to "Educate" and "change" them. Your words bely your arrogance. You must be right and moral because of your beliefs, and therefore you should join the nuts in the Religious Right who support Georgie Boy, since he and his cronies feel the same way. Listen to yourself... Where ever that anger is coming from it shouldn't be directed at Kate. Rick ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2006 23:02:59 -0700 (PDT) From: Nuriel Tobias Subject: RE: Real or fake? Just look at us trying to understand if it's an original Joni or a fake.:) Sure it's a fake and not a very good one as Kakki said, but you know that while we're busy debating that, someone who's never heard of Joni is looking at this silly painting on ebay and thinking "Well, i don't know who Joni Mitchell is but i think it's a very nice painting", and then buys it and hangs it on the wall and enjoys it everyday not because it's a Joni or a non-Joni but because he likes it. Isn't that what true love for art is all about? Loving something simply for what it is and not for the name behind it? No wonder that art is treated like merchandise these days, and worst than that, the artists themselves. And it's true everywhere you look and everywhere you go. Do you buy your clothes for their trends, lables and tags or simply because you like them? Cause if you don't, my dear clown, then you won't wear then for very long before you go and look for something better to buy. Do you have friends that like you for your status and class or do you have real friends ? Did you marry someone because they were trendy, best labled and tagged as oo-la-la or because you liked their kindness? Cause if you didn't then your lawyer is already waiting. Do you love yourself because you're trendy and labled as a success and you're tagged as Mr. this and Mrs. that or because there's no one in the whole world like you? And back to Joni - if you're one of the many here who never heard or knew anything about her when you heard her music for the first time and still fell for her, then you know what i'm talking about. Loving something or someone for what it is, even if it's a fake, is true, and loving something or someone for it's worth, even if it's an original, is a fake. And although we live in a world where we choose things for their tags and lables, including dogs, cats, horses and humans, it's still the things we simply love without even knowing why that we always keep with us and treasure the most.
