Lisa Mitchell performed a mesmerising rendition of the Coldplay song, See You Soon, singing and playing guitar. Judge, Mark Holden said her guitar style was reminiscent of early Joni Mitchell. The performance was exquisite. This is a girl we will all hear a lot more of in years to come regardless of whether she wins or not. (all), Alice here with some thoughts about homophobia, etc. Two things really drive be bonkers in this world: 1. Religions that devalue humans and force them to submit to an evil "good" authority along with the terrible yet accepted myth of hell. 2. The suppression of homosexuality. I think that both of these issues are tied to the same major bitch that I have: THE MOTHERFUCKING DENIAL AND REPRESSION OF OUR BASIC HUMANITY!!!!! The major religions start with humans being evil. You know, fuck that!!!!!!! Humans have constructive and destructive impulses. That's just part of the animal kingdom, survival instincts, etc. But governments and religions want to threaten and guilt us out of it. And you know what, that's impossible. We are who we are: humans; wonderful, beautiful, loving, sexual, creative, caring, giving, angry, passionate, dangerous, needy, etc. We are awesome beings!! I love humanity so much. I've made it my life's work to help humans to accept and appreciate who they really are, constructive and desctructive parts alike. Yes, I do help people to get healthy enough to want to make mostly constructive choices, but this comes from self-acceptance, self-love, and self-care, NOT SELF-DENIAL!!! Being human is not a choice!!! Just like sexual-orientation is not a choice. It is a part of the wonderful diversity of humanity. A natural diversity that we also see in thousands of species!!!!! Surprised? Yea, the scientific communitie's findings are fucking suppressed too! I love what Jung calls my "shadow" side, unconventional, offbeat, rowdy, selfish, angry, bold, free. I rarely do anything destructive, but I love allowing myself to fantasize and have a good laugh at my "destructive side." Actually, in general, I tend to be unusually accepting, gracious, and constructive in my actions towards myself and others. When I was religious and trying to supress and deny my shadow side, I acted like an asshole a lot more often. I feel the same way about humans with a different sexual orientations. I DON'T SEE HOMOSEXUALITY OR HOMOSEXUALS AS DESTRUCTIVE "SHADOW" BEINGS AT ALL. I want to be clear about that. But, for me, I LOVE the unconventional, offbeat, aspects of gay folks and the gay lifestyle. It's so fucking refreshing!! And, although I'm totally straight (not by choice, it's just who I am), I love the added pseudosexual element that gay folks bring to social dynamics. You get me?? When humans label gayness as wrong and try to suppress it, we devalue and diminish our humanity. Not to mention we cause an unthinkable tearing apart of the gay heart and mind and life. Fuck that!! I've always dug gay people. But I had a real taste of being "in the closet" when, after 13 years of being a totally devoted evangelical christian and it causing me to become mentally and emotionally so ill I had to seek sanity by studying arguments against the truth of the bible, etc., I came to not believe, to be, yes, dare I mention the word?, an atheist. Well, my husband, best friend, brother, and most people I knew were christians. I was terrified at what their reactions would be. Would I lose everyone I loved? Should I tell them? In other words I had to go though a being in the closet stage and a coming our of the closet process. It was horrible! Devistating! It isolated me from humanity. I was there but not there. I was alone. I couldn't stand it very long before I said, fuck it, and came out. It was sad and hurtful to many who love me, and that was really hard for me. But we've all made the adjustment, and my realtionships are better than ever. I'm still semi-in the closet professionally because many christian clients sought me out because I was a christian counselor, and if I made a point to tell them that I was no longer a christian, it could be very disturbing and confusing to them and thier own faith. So I have not come out to my clients or former clients. They still send christians to me for christian counseling. If their referral asks me if I'm a christian, I say no. But if they don't ask, then it would be inappropriate for me to state it because they didn't ask and they would tell my previous client who could be confused, dismayed and disturbed by it. To date, no christian client of mine has ever lost their faith. But it can be really frustrating for me to have to "keep it a secret" for these kinds of professional and ethical reasons. I did call focus on the family and all of the churches who referred clients to me and told them that I was no longer a christian, etc. And it felt great. My practice took a hit, but, fuck it, I'm free. I guess, since I rant about religion from time to time, and I will definitely rant about the suppression of gayness, I wanted you all to know what I've been through and why religion and homophobia pisses me off so much. Note: my husband, best friend, and brother are still christians and I do not attempt to deconvert them (well, my hubby and I had some mutually agreed upon arguments about it). My rule is: I'll respect your right to have faith, if you will respect my right to have none. Sorry about my anit-religious rants. I'll try not to overdo it. I am an out and proud atheist and do not want to suppress who I am. But I do love and respect people of faith, I just hate the major religions, I don't hate the people. I'm devoted to the love and respect of humanity. Thanks for listening. I'd like to agree, but it sometimes seems to me that this subject is better left to the men and boys, at least as long as there is so much about male sexuality that women cannot accept. I'm not saying women are intolerant bigots, it just strikes me again and again what a difference it makes to be a boy or a girl, and that many boys grow up with a completely different mindset when it comes to sex than girls. I think, for instance, that there is more sexual stuff going on between even heterosexual teenage boys than between teenage girls. Sexual abuse of children is repulsive because it damages the child psychologically, I can't even begin to think about how you get over it. So yes, there's got to be some line you don't cross as an adult. I don't know... It just seems that the way it is repulsive to most people makes it impossible to have sensible discussions about what is abuse and what is not. So maybe I should stop here... That fear can make people say and do such ugly things. I really appreciate it when you can be open-minded about your opponents like that, although it is probably rather knowing that even people you love and respect can have opinions that would make you despise them if they didn't happen to be close to you. You seem to be walking on a borderline all the time, even in this forum! I thought about these things when Nuri posted a thread (titled Dead Angel)about homofobia in Jerusalem some time ago, it sounded really bad and very sad. THat same week I watched a documentary about Freddie Mercury (could have been titled Dead Angel too if you ask me...). I remember when he died, I think Liz Taylor gave a speech in which she said something like 'you all know that Freddie was very open about being bisexual...'. What a lie, for most of his career he was completely uptight about being GAY. Watching the program I suddenly remembered that when I heard that speech I was really sruprised, I had no idea he was gay. NO IDEA?? I watch him today and se a blatantly gay man, was I blind? And secondly, how could he think for one second that the public wouldn't suspect it? This is not to say that by that time I was homophobic, but to say how much society can change within a few decades. Freddie M felt coming out would be bad for his career, and people were so ignorant that most didn't suspect he was gay. It's such a different world today, in that respect at least. I'd like to hate and despise those bloody US homophobics and vile Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem, but they are people too and likely to be kind and generous and interesting. Give them twenty years and they may have eased out of it... A woman I know was put out in the street 40 yeas ago when she as nineteen, when her step-mother found out she was a lesbian. They never really got over it, but she agreed when I said, the woman was probably terrified, the way someone might react today if she finds out her grown-up child is a pedophile. Homophobia doesn't mean hatred to homos, it means fear of them. Ok enough, this is the second lengthy email I write today! And this IS the Joni MItchell mailing list, not the sexual tolerance-list... so you all take care out there! There are a of these bands and their name origins listed below. I came across this on boingboing.com. - --Smurf http://library.thinkquest.org/4626/rock.htm AC/DC - 1) It is said that one of the band member saw it on an appliance and thought it had something to do with power. (It does mean "alternating current / direct current".) The band used it not realizing it was also slang for a bisexual- the band claims NOT to be bisexual. 2) In the vogue of other anti-everything bands it stands for Against Christ/Devil's Children. ALICE IN CHAINS - a funny rumor is that they were named after a lost episode from The Brady Bunch series!... CHUMBAWAMBA - In a band member's dream, he didn't know which door to use in a public toilet because the signs said "Chumba" and "Wamba" instead of "Men" and "Women"... JETHRO TULL - popular 70's band that is named after the rather obscure inventor of the farmer's seed drill... JUDAS PRIEST - originally a mild curse said to avoid saying "Jesus Christ" - also from the Bob Dylan song "The ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest"... T PAU - after a high priestess from the planet VULCAN in the American TV series STAR TREK... YO LA TENGO -translates to "I have it" from Spanish - said to be the phrase called out by Hispanic baseball players when fielding a pop fly ball. Singer/guitar player Ira Kaplan got the expression from a book he was reading about baseball called The Five Seasons. ZZ TOP - taken from the name of a Texas Blues man ZZ Hill. Though a rumor is that they got their name by combining Zig Zag and Top, two well known brands of "cigarette" rolling papers. Tired of spam? Yahoo! It's funny....while watching the Bengalis lose this afternoon...I was thinking that you or someone on the list might ask me this very question. I did vote twice for our current prez......why? The short answer...he didn't cheat on his wife or beat her ;-)....he seemed to have some of the same values as I. He said things like...people need to be accountable for their actions...across the board tax cuts.....less government....more protection for the unborn...cutting out some of the bloated bureaucracy. Where other people saw a phony...I saw sincerity. Dumb? Well maybe he's not Einstein..but who needs an Einstein to be president? I guess..my opinion only.... he is certainly not this horrible monster the left tries to portray him as..nor is he the Ronald Reagan like.... that many conservatives had hoped he would be. He falls probably somewhere between these two extremes. Brilliant at times..fumbling at other. Yes...the deficit is high...but is coming down. Some of his goals .. by his inaction only...have made things worse..like immigration. Other goals...across the board tax cuts...have surpassed expectations. Proposing Prescription assistance for the elderly and getting it passed... he took some major hits from the fiscal conservatives for this. But he felt it was the right thing to do. Yes....the bureaucracy has gotten bigger. Adding new departments like Homeland Security have definitely bloated things. Is it a necessity? The jury is out on that one. THE WAR: hmmm....?? Again ...he felt it was the right thing to do. I watched something on C-Span last night ..it was a get-together for the left...there was a panel and then one by one people would come up to the microphone giving their opinion of the president...and his phony war. I'm still mystified as to why the left and others still want to say he made up the WMD's thing about Iraq for starting this war. My thinking.. IF..which I don't believe for a second..he did make that up just so we could get their oil (Although..one wonders why..if that is just our goal ...why we didn't go all the way the first time around ..during his father's time....during Desert Storm .. and get that prized oil....OIL that apparently drives a person mad and do such irrational things) why not ...why didn't he take that next step and secrete WMD's in there?? You know ..if you are so nuts to make up WMD"S for starting a war..then make sure ..so the story works..plant those suckers. OR next scenario ... if one is so calculating and cunning..then logically and good strategy would be to "find" some of those deadly weapons there. Then SOME of the audience even pondered whether he could have orchestrated 9/11. (I almost spit my Ho's Ho's out on that one..time to flip the channel ..next channel ..how to lose ten pounds in seven days ) Again...neither Satan nor God...he falls somewhere in the middle. When a president puts their hand on the bible and swears to preserve and protect this country.. first and foremost to be a guardian of it's liberties......that is an awesome responsibility..one that his character told me he doesn't take lightly. In the end ..he thinks...he is doing the right thing. And at times ..I think he does the right things. Pepper Dear Joniamigos: Travelling in my vehicle ce soir, I heard on the radio a 40th anniversary tribute to "Pet Sounds". This may be common knowledge to most of you, but it was new to me: Brian Wilson was inspired by "Rubber Soul". And Paul McCartney said that "Pet Sounds" blew him out of the water. I just love interconnectedness (interconnectivity? whatever...) so I had to check it out on Wikipedia, and get better quotes from Brian and Sir Paul. I'll try not to paste too much..... "The real catalyst for Pet Sounds was The Beatles' new LP Rubber Soul (The US version and not the UK version), which was released in December 1965. Brian later recalled his first impressions of the groundbreaking album: I really wasn't quite ready for the unity. It felt like it all belonged together. Rubber Soul was a collection of songs ... that somehow went together like no album ever made before, and I was very impressed. I said, "That's it. I really am challenged to do a great album." Although not a big seller for the band originally, Pet Sounds has been influential since the day it was released. Rapturously received in Britain, it was lauded in the music press and championed by many top pop stars. The Beatles, for example, have said that Pet Sounds was a major influence on the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, and Paul McCartney has repeatedly named it as one of his favorite albums (with "God Only Knows" as his favorite song) completing a circle begun by the Beatles' influence on Brian (see "the beginning of Pet Sounds", above). McCartney stated that: "It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water. I love the album so much. I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life ... I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard that album ... I love the orchestra, the arrangements ... it may be going overboard to say it's the classic of the century ... but to me, it certainly is a total, classic record that is unbeatable in many ways ... I've often played Pet Sounds and cried. I played it to John [Lennon] so much that it would be difficult for him to escape the influence ... it was the record of the time. The thing that really made me sit up and take notice was the bass lines ... and also, putting melodies in the bass line. That I think was probably the big influence that set me thinking when we recorded Pepper, it set me off on a period I had then for a couple of years of nearly always writing quite melodic bass lines. "God Only Knows" is a big favourite of mine ... very emotional, always a bit of a choker for me, that one. On "You Still Believe In Me", I love that melody - that kills me ... that's my favourite, I think ... it's so beautiful right at the end ... comes surging back in these multi-colored harmonies ... sends shivers up my spine." Other artists have also cited Pet Sounds as one of the all time classic albums. Eric Clapton stated that "I consider Pet Sounds to be one of the greatest pop LPs to ever be released. It encompasses everything that's ever knocked me out and rolled it all into one." Elton John thinks that "Pet Sounds is a landmark album. For me to say that I was enthralled would be an understatement. I had never heard such magical sounds, so amazingly recorded. It undoubtedly changed the way that I, and countless others, approached recording. It is a timeless and amazing recording of incredible genius and beauty." Beatles producer George Martin stated that "Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds." Bob Dylan has said of Brian Wilson's talents, "That ear - I mean, Jesus, he's got to will that to the Smithsonian." Okay, end of Wikipedia. I think that's so cool that Rubber Soul inspired Pet Sounds which inspired Sgt. Pepper. Life is for learning, even if I'm behind the times. And then, of course -- starlight, starbright, stardust and golden -- along comes Joni!
