I'm not always thrilled with some of the more "out there, in your face" representations of gay life, because they sure as hell don't represent ME, but I'm not going to skip being counted as a participant just because I don't think it's necessary for a dom to whip her (or his) sub in public. Lori Santa Rosa, CA" To Lori and Bree (and others reading this thread): Harry Hay is not 'some prick from NAMBLA'. Get a grip, people! Do you seriously think in 1999 that the San Francisco, Pride Committee of arguably the largest GLBTQ celebration on the planet, would put 'some prick from NAMBLA' in a limosine and parade him as the Grand Marshall? Sure he was an advocate of man-boy love, but that was among so many other grand and highminded things he advocated, stood for, helped found. Do yourselves a favor and rent (or buy or borrow) the film: "Hope Along The Wind: The Life of Harry Hay". It's available right here: http://www.harryhay.com/aboutfilm.html Keillor is right on. San Francisco = gay in this country's consciousness (or lack of it), and the homophobes, right wing conservatives, religious fundamentalists, and the politicians who lick their asses have all jumped on the 'kill the gay agenda before it kills us' bandwagon. It happened in 2004 when "W" was reelected, and arguably lost us the presidency, when they flung gay marriage up at the electorate as the Democratic threat. And of course it continues. It's been swirling in my heart and mind all week and I have to get it out. My analyst told me. Some turn to Jesus And some turn to heroin Some turn to painting, or singing, or guitar-playing, or piano playing, or dancing, or pills and powders to get us through this passion play. I guess I turn to writing. I never knew that before; it's something I'm just beginning to realize, by being here. Thank you for helping me to grow, and for taking me as I am, and for sometimes approving my self-expression. Likewise, I am always here for anyone whose spirits start to sink. It's a you-know-what! Madwoman of Mansfield Found, Unfettered and Alive Flip City, CT (Combined Wire Services) October 14, 2006 Concerned friends and kin breathed a collective sigh of relief yesterday as the "Madwoman of Mansfield" was found, unfettered and alive, at her workplace in Morning UConntown. Numerous reports from passersbys and lovers on the streets had trickled through leaky police plans all throughout the week. The Madwoman of Mansfield (hereafter sometimes referred to as MoM -- an acronyn, for Catherine) was spotted in various locations and activities: travelling in some bumpersticker-bedecked vehicle ("My other car is a big yellow taxi", "Dumont for Senate", "War is not the answer", and the enigmatic "SIQUOMB" - --- ????), running through the woods like a white-assed deer and jumping from boulders, pulling up to a gas pump and shrieking out the window: "HEY! Where's barangrill?", stepping inside a candy store, going cafe to cabaret, gathering flowers for her home, stopping in boutiques (it's comin' on Christmas) and swinging hot spots, underneath a street light (A m-m-madwoman - madwoman, kicking over garbage cans), and you know there may be more. Yet all week, police were unsuccessful in catching her. Just when they were thinking they finally had it made, she'd get her gorgeous wings and fly away. Wild things run fast. *Finally*, as the milk trucks made their morning rounds, after *days* of JRAs (Joni-related absences), the Madwoman showed up at her workplace in Morning UConntown. Her fingernails were filthy and she had beach tar on her feet. She entered the building singing: "Tell those girls that you've got Joni, She's coming back home. She's coming back home!" She skipped up to group of French colleagues chatting in the hallway and rudely interrupted, gushing: "Wooo hooo! Guess what! You won't BELIEVE it! I can't take it....I can't seem to believe it. You know my two biggest passions, right? Darn right!" The French faculty exchanged furtive yet amused glances. Eliane thought for a moment in time, out on some borderline, and then ventured: "Uhhhhhh......Joe-nee Meetchell and...... Oh Mon Dieu! Je sais! Je comprends maintenant. Joe-nee Meetchell ees going to marry senate hopeful Jed Dumont! C'est ca! C'est ca, Patti?" MoM collapsed in hysterical laughter. "Non, non, non. Mes copines, ecoutez! Ecoutez bien! Elle revient! Joni!!!! Finallement, after so many years, tethered to an art easel, elle parlera au suject de la GUERRE et l'etat affreux du monde et...." Roger C. shook his head, and said she's changed. He whispered to Solange: "I've never seen her THIS twisted before. Elle est *completement* folle aujourd'hui!" Solange nodded in agreement: "L'hysterie. Absoluement. Sans doute." The Madwoman continued with her good news (Oh radiant happiness). It was all so light and easy, until she started analyzing, and brought on her old ways. A thunderhead of judgment was gathering in her gaze. "Attendez un instant. You don't get it, do you? You Frenchies don't know merde! Joni Mitchell is a GODDESSE! Osvaldo in Spanish even said! And Roger T. in Classics said it, too. And he "knows from goddesses", in his own words. He loves "Circle Game", "Blue", and "Little Green". Voila! Sacre BLEU de cochon VERT. What is the MATTER with you freakin' freedom fryers? Joni wrote "Free Man in Paris" and "In France They Kiss on Main Street". She sat in a park in Paris, France. She even wears fancy French cologne. She loves France, even though it so old and cold and settled in its ways. Why, if she had her way, she'd just wander down the Champs Elysees. Oh, shame on all of you!" The rant goes on. "I may be almost fifty-three, but I am *swinging!" Joni Mitchell is COMING OUT OF RETIREMENT. We on the JMDL thought she'd never write again, and now she is. She is in touch with the breakdown of this century! Oooh la la -- that dizzy, dancing way you feel, when every Joni fairy tale comes real! Vous ne comprenez pas?" The French professors thought they were gazing into a madwoman's soul -- the Madwoman of Chaillot reincarnate, peut etre? Someone asked: "Qu'est-ce que c'est, c'est "jmdl'?" and Eliane whispered: "Some lunatic-fringe internet discussion group she is on." With that, Ms. Parlette started roaring like forest fire. "Ha! I think you're immune! You just don't know enough. Life is for learning! You professors, of all people, should know that! Go look at your eyes! They're full of Voltaire and Gide and Sartre and Camus and de Maupassant, and you don't know diddly-squat (or dee-dah as Joni and Joan sang) about the greatest artiste of our lifetime. What about Baudelaire, votre grand poet? "Fleurs du Mal". Ha! Don't you know that Joni has written better Fleurs du Mal than he ever did?" The MoM ranted on, starting to shake her fists at lightning now. "And don't you *dare* make fun of my jmdl. There are some brilliant -- *brilliant*, I tell you -- people on that list. We have philosophers and teachers from Spain, actors and a queen from the UK, psychotherapists from the U.S.A. and Ireland and Argentina, and librarians, and a scholar in Norway named Karen Marie doing her dissertation on Joni (and you know there may be more). A famous actor in Israel. Musicians from all over the world. Paz who has toured with Arlo Guthrie and you know there may be more. Awesome songbirds in DC and SB. A guy in Boston who handles "Joni in Fiction". A Musik Meister in SC who is the Covers King. And an English professor, too, from the South. He read Joni's new poem and said it is very good. Very good. Un explication de texte will follow when time and good fortune allow. Camille Paglia wrote a book that began with Shakespeare and ended with -- yes -- Joni Mitchell." The MoM made most people nervous -- they just didn't want to know. Anne stood in her frightened silence, thinking she didn't understand. Eliane quietly slipped away to phone the Employee Assistance Program while the others tried to talk sense to the troubled child. And then the Germans came walking by. The Madwoman grabbed Katharina's arm and said: "Ha! Katharina knows Joni. She went to UCLA, in California. Oh, California, I'm coming home." Katharina smiled and said: "Naturlich! Ja. Joni ist ganz wunderbar! Joni sings about Rhein wine, Milch of the Madonna." The Germans grinned. "You're so square, Frenchie babies, but we don't care." The hallways were filled with passersby, and term papers fly, and cellphones came ringing up like pipes and drums. In some office sits a secretary, and she trembles as she says into the phone: "Patti? Ummm....she's not....ummmm... available right now." A few seconds of silence, and then: "Oh, It's Janis? Well then, I can tell *you*. She's having a Joni emergency. A *really* bad one. Worse than when she heard about that tribute thing." - ------------ Phew! Holy merde. I have to stop. "How do you stop?" LOL....I could write this crazy shooby dooby flip city stuff all day, but I have other things to do. Such as think of what I'd like to have for supper, take a walk..... Bon weekend, tout le Joni monde! Love, Patti P., off to take a shower, where I will sing, with anima rising: "Wash my guilt of emailing, wash and balance me..." (with "balance" being the operative word!) NB: the above post is a partly fictionalized, quasi-journalistic account of one JMOCDed woman's reaction to the announcement that Ms. Mitchell is coming in from the cold to speak out against the madness that is gripping the world. I know Bree is frequent poster and a beloved community member, and out of deference to her the responses from Jerry and Lori were measured. But the bottom line is, Bree, your post reeks of party-line style homophobia, even as you pretend to denounce it. And your Reagan quote as a tag line doubles the insult, IMO. Reagan and his administration stood back and, with deliberation, watched a generation of young men die of AIDS (according to C. Evertt Koop). How can anyone who supports the Republican party not be aware that Rove and his gang have been exploiting homophobia to energize the evangelical "fringe"? I am not saying that you approve of this tactic, Bree, but in your post you seem to deny it. That denial is irresponsible and dangerous. You seem to have fallen for the same scare tactics that you and I and most gay people denounce. I do not support NAMBLA either, but to conflate the actions of Foley with the philosophies of NAMBLA is unwise. I do not for one second defend Foley. He is a pathetic, closeted, hypocritical monster who abused his position of authority. However, from what I can understand, he does not advocate sex between men and pre-pubescent boys. Age of consent laws vary from state-to-state, and if attraction to a 16-year old makes one a pedophile, then Elvis Presley was a pedophile. Let's burn Graceland to the ground! Best, David ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2006 15:10:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Darice Subject: Joni's sheep, parades et al. (NJC) There is a marvelous Greek folktale about the "Moonspinners" (yes the Hayley Mills movie). These Greek women go down to the seashore and wash the wool in the water. Some of the wool floats away to the horizon and the rising moon is created from the wool. This accounts for the waxing and waning moons. SO there is a long Greek custom of comparing the waves and sea to the wool of sheep. On the parade and Nancy Pelosi's participation, politicians frequently appear at these functions. Their appearance is seldom an endorsement of ALL the various participants, etc. In fact, court cases have been filed (and won) giving certain groups the right to march singly or in a public parade even when the group is not considered as representative of the views of the majority of the paticipants and attendees. I do not support many groups who march in the Annual St Patrick's parade , yet I have marched in the parade with my Irish wolfhouds. Should my participatin brand me as an IRA sympathizer?? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2006 19:16:18 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: Vote for your favorite Logo!! I'm glad you decided to "come out" for this discussion. ;-) Where do I start? First of all...that Reagan tag line was meant as a joke..really. As far as Foley goes..I agree with you. IF we take into account everything that has been given to the public so far..I don't think he's your classic pedophile...and he is probably not one. His guilt I was say is more along of the lines that he abused his authority...in that... he took advantage of a subordinate...a very young one at that. ( I do think the democrats have been trying to capitalize on that...especially being so close to the mid-terms. ) It is a shame that he didn't just come out and say ..yes..I'm a gay man.. that is one aspect of me...but I still want less government..tighter borders..whatever the party line is. I think most people would have accepted him. Voters want honesty...integrity...values. So I feel very sad for him...even though he abused his position. (dumbness in the end..may be his only crime) I understand the republican party has a certain segment that is very much homophobic...and yes. very openly say... gays are going to hell. Believe me....I'm well aware of that mindset that exists...but it is not majority in the party. We can't change a heart like that...and the in-your -face - -tactics ....that just alienates people. Fundamentalists really think it is a choice we are making....they don't understand we were born this way. We...the gay community.. have to remember that people fear what they don't understand. That fear can make people say and do such ugly things. Me own mother would have never accepted my lifestyle...but she always loved me. ( My mother was very KIND...decent...and gracious. ) I bring up my own mother because I would like to think that the majority of people...although..don't approve of the gay lifestyle...are not advocating hate towards us either. I stick by what I said in a previous post..it's been so long I can't remember word for word..but something like ..I don't believe Republicans use gays as a fear tactic. What Republicans use..Rove ..whoever.. is the word LIBERAL. They know that most people in this country are fairly moderate...let's forget about the fringes here...just middle America....they don't vote liberal/leftist...except in very small pockets. So when a Republican speaks about the left coast... or San Francisco mentality ..a light bulb goes off...liberal/leftist. (It's a big umbrella.) Yes..the gay factor does add into that. But the liberal/leftist thing..it's their ace in the hole. ( The spinners and handlers .. that is how they operate...rightly or wrongly.) But the Democrats have their tactics too......look how they try to tarnish every conservative...painting with such a broad brush.....you know...they want to throw all old people out on the street...don't care about children eating lunch.. heartless..don't care about clean water. Maybe the only consensus we could draw is that the game of politics can get real dirty? I appreciate your response. Thanks... Bree PS. I really want to look into the whole Reagan thing concerning the AIDS crisiis...what he did or did not do. >Hi Listers, > >I'm pretty much a lurker now, and it takes a lot to prod me into posting, >but when I read crap like this, it makes me sick.
