I tape them and have so far seen Robert Mitchum, Alfred Hitchcock and last night Bette Davis. Next week it's Groucho Marx. It's a nice change to see 90 minutes of someone (without commercials!!) rather than the scant 4 minutes, tell an amusing anecdote, plug your latest movie and you're off! Cavett, to me, gets a little annoying trying to interject his humor to get some attention for himself, but that's beside the point. I always loved talk shows growing up, Mike Douglas (who recently passed away), Merv Griffin and the format was different then, just talking about anything that occurred to people with everyone staying on 'the couch' to add in, rather than people shuffled in and out. I'm sure what was in those glasses on the coffee table was more than water (Mitchum admitted it was; Davis insisted not), but then ... Just wondering if anyone else was enjoying these. Next is from Entertainment Weekly, 9/29/06, a section called The A List, October 2006: "Shawn Colvin, These Four Walls, A singer-songwriter in the Joni Mitchell mold, Colvin turns her pain into works that are vital and profound." How wonderfully brilliant Bette was. So down to earth. I love her opinion about the modern movie as opposed to the films of old. It was a riveting interview. I'm so glad these have held up the way they have. The Groucho Marx one should be spectacular. Cavett worshipped Marx and knew his work well. Such a difference than today when guests walk on and the host says "Well I haven't had time to read your book, or see your film, or whatever" and then they give 20 minutes of blather. When I go listen to music, even if I go with friends or family, I want to be alone. At day long festivals, passing through cliquish crowds, comfortable on the ground, and not being able to retreat to my "splendid isolation," as Warren Zevon penned it, I feel suffocated. Van Morrison, all of a sudden decided to show up at Austin's Zilker Park's music festival, last Friday. I found out Thursday night and I wanted to go with all that I am...but thinking of the crowds, gave me the dizzy dancing, quezy feel. I was upset all last week-end because I didn't see Van. I want to see Van Morrison way up close, like first row. The only time I saw Van, was with Joni and Dylan, in Vancouver, back in '98, at the GM Stadium. But, I felt too far from them, amongst so many people, for my private, contemplative, joyous connections, when the healing really begins. I may go see Leon Russell for old times sake tomorrow at Gruene Hall in Gruene, Texas. It's a honky-tonk joint and I get right up near the stage with nobody in my way and dance to some real romance. Two of my dreams in life are to see Joni and Ry all to myself, up close, even if there are 10,000 strong. You see, in this dream, I fly....but somehow this fairy tale just may come true. I have a similar Lisboa story which is also very real, but in a very different setting. I was in Lisbon with an Argentine friend of mine who knew some Portuguese. We decided to go to the beach at Sintra, which was recommended to him by the pretty hotel clerk. I had no idea what they were saying, but there were flirtatious expressions amongst them. I said, "So what! This ladies' man will never change. " We drove off to the sea and from afar, I fell in love with the "sheep". The waves were just what I needed. We park the car, start heading out and I start looking around, quite confused. It was a nudist's beach. I asked him angrily, "Why did you bring me here?" He said it was the only beach around town. I told him I was not even taking off my top to blend in. We settled down on our towels and things and I told him not to look at the pretty girls. So he just shut his eyes and fell asleep. Freely and without jealousy or pre-conceived notions, I started observing nudity in masses. It seemed so natural to them. My next door neighbor campers were a family of five. A mom, dad, grandma and two little kids. The grandmother was under a beach umbrella with her legs wide open, as she read a book. Her two little grandkids were playing cars and dolls right near her crotch like a little haven. It was the most natural thing....as natural as coming out of the womb. It was all new to me and still is. The point is, that I rustled up my friend's rest and told him I was wrong and felt guilty for having such thoughts. It was alright. He went back to his rest. All of a sudden, I see a Black man walking the shore with the most largest thing I had ever seen. I thought, "Okay, this dude's just an exhibitionist!" I woke up my friend and said, "Look at that man's thing....it's as long as a cane!" To pay me back, he said, "Don't look." I covered my eyes and left a space open to peek and he came over towards my face and said, "No cheating." We just had to laugh at it all. I still felt out of place, so we rented a paddle boat, went way off from shore and there I swam, swim suit and all alone! The Portuguese have a healthier attitude about nudity. Here, sex sells everything. So sad! Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the Crazy Horse show! Crazy Horse reminds me of Neil Young, but I just can't imagine Neil and Crazy Horse performing in the nude. What was that show all about with a title like "Crazy Horse?"
