I absolutely loved it too. Surprised to hear it's repeating now, must be on one of the "additional" channels - I still only watch the 5 "main" ones, haven't even got time to focus on those! But that was an excellent series, so different, made me feel like I became a member of that family, understood history so much better when looking at it on that small scale (and particularly when adding it, as another side to the coin, to the family stories from my own family in Belgium, not so far from the German border...) Funny you should mention it now or that it should be on repeat now, as I bought the DVD set for my youngest son last Christmas. He was studying German and is now studying TV production, so I felt this would be good "baggage" for him to have - and hopefully to enjoy. The idea is that we'll probably sit through it together in bits and pieces as and when he comes home for a visit. Thanks for posting the reviews, I'll pass them on too. I'm not talking about the Idyllwild Jazz festival which was held over a month ago, but the show on Saturday 4 November in San Diego. By now I have to accept that there is no way I can make it myself, but I can imagine that some of you listers are much closer to that venue than little me, or have more time to get there, and it seems such an exciting set-up! Indeed, it could have made a great Jonifest too... Well in any case, good luck to you, Dave and Robin. I hope many people will come and enjoy the show. Do send us a report about it, in any case! This two-day event is held in the gorgeous mountain town of Idyllwild above Palm Springs CA and is situated on the campus of the Idyllwild Arts School under the pines. Any listers from L.A, San Diego or Riverside are not a long drive from here. You wanted to lose the smog anyway right? This show will bring a couple of firsts for us: the addition of Paul Carman on sax and flute and the debut of our most challenging Joni tune ever : A Chair in the Sky. Paul is a veteran L.A saxman and was part of the vaunted Frank Zappa horn section for four years. And our keyboardist Barnaby Finch toured with Tom Scott himself in the eighties as well as long stints with George Benson and Lee Ritenour. To say we have the qualified crew would be...well.....true. Looking ahead a bit, I'd like to give advance notice to all Jonilisters of our biggest show of the year on Sat Nov 4th, timed to coincide with Joni's 63rd birthday. The venue is a fantastic all-ages listening space (no blenders, talking or widescreen TVs) called Dizzy's in San Diego (dizzyssandiego.com). We will be bringing the full 6-piece band and playing well over two hours of solid Joni music, and not just the folkey material. Our show, which is largely chronological, now features For the Roses, Down to You (the whole orchestral enchilada), Harry's House, Hejira, Coyote, Dreamland, A Chair in the Sky, Cherokee Louise, Passion Play, Borderline, Night Ride Home and How do You Stop in addition to the expected hits and evergreens. This promises to be the Joni Mitchell event of the year, perhaps anywhere. We will be recording the whole deal to 24-track and may even have Joni's artwork projected above us as we play (thanks to Zooby). Please consider taking a winter junket to warm San Diego, make this a west coast Jonifest and come see the show. You can keep us honest on the lyrics!! Don't make it Last Chance Lost.... Every time I hear him speak, either in interviews or speeches, I am impressed. He is so smart and funny and humane. It is such a pleasure to listen to him because he can express complex thoughts (and we sure need a leader who can not only THINK that way, but make such thinking understandable). Many people dismiss Obama right away as not having enough experience to be a national leader soon, but I disagree. He was active in Illinois politics for a long time before he ran as the Illinois senator, so he knows all about negotiating and racial tensions and representing all different people. Obama's experience looks especially stellar when compared to the background of our current leader. Ned wants to come back to UConn Friday, and guess who's coming to support him? General Wesley Clark! Woo hoo! Bringin' out the big guns now! If you don't know him, here is something he said in February 2003: "If we go in (to Iraq) unilaterally, or without the full weight of international organizations behind us, if we go in with a very sparse number of allies, if we go in without an effective information operation.....we're liable to supercharge recruiting for al-Qaida." - --General Wesley Clark, former NATO Supreme Commander "Nobody stopped to hear him......." Well, a lot of us did, but not enough. And now look at the mess we are in. And Joni agrees. While looking at her paintings here recently, I saw this for the first time: )From the Trailblazer Interview by Camille Paglia, August 2005) CP: You have a fire image on the front of Dreamland. JM: Oh, that's just George W. Bush burning down the world. All my paintings lately have been Bush bonfires. It's the same as the forest fire in Bambi, with the hideous white hunger. In the liner notes for "Harlem in Havana," from the artist's choice, Joni wrote about the Black dancing girls coming out to dance to a hot and humid, brassy stripper dance--some chewing gum--flipping their capes open and closed to the beat--liked they had done a million times-a tired, bored tease. Joni sounds similarly tired at the end of "That Song About The Midway," when she sings to the man she met at the last year's midway and who "stood out like a ruby in a black man's ear.." Like the bored, tired Harlem in Havana dancers, she woefully sings, And a voice calls out the numbers And it sometimes mentions mine And I feel like I've been working overtime I've lost my fire overtime Always playing one more hand for one more dime Slowin' down I'm getting tired 'Cause I'm midway down the midway Slowin' down, down, down, down.. Women, although we've come a long way babies, remain second class citizens. I am reminded of that neurobiologist at Stanford whom I recently heard about. Has anyone heard his story? Voila une example: "Barres, a neurobiologist at Stanford Medical School, knows what it's like to be a female scientist and a male one: He is a former female named Barbara who underwent a sex change nine years ago. Since he became male, "people who don't know I am transgendered treat me with much more respect. He also had a story about someone saying that his work was much better than his "sister's." (It was the work he had done as a woman.) Lieve also wrote: "So can I just be stubborn and insistent, and ask people to give that "Sophia" song a listen? I really almost found it "spooky" (but in a pleasant way) to hear such a "real Joni Mitchell song" written and produced by somebody else. I'd love to hear what others think!" I gave it a listen, but only got to hear 28 seconds. Is there somewhere else I can find it? Lieve encore une fois: "And if you agree that it's a "real JM song", which Joni album do you think it would fit in best? My own stab would be somewhere around For the Roses.
