It had occurred to me a few times that Joni did mean "sheep." But, I still didn't get it. Are the sheep the wayward lambs who fell into the ocean..the slaves who will be free, leaving the prosperous wicked swine with their own dirty radiation rose laundries do to themselves? When I saw the words Catherine had isolated the same thought struck me, Jim. I went as far as to research and see if Humble had actually manufactured Pure. Then I thought "oh no, that's too far fetched -- if I mention this, the list will think I've lost it." I even took it a step further. You can actually find four oil companies in the lyric if you read it "Sun Cities Service they say Humble makes Pure". Sun is now Sunoco, Cities Service is Citgo, Humble is Exxon and Pure was once fairly widely distributed and now has been resurrected as a gasoline retailer to smaller gas stations. They also had some pretty neat "filling stations" back in the day. Imagine gas stations with window boxes and a cottage look. See: http://www.agilitynut.com/gas/2b.html I think Barangrill is the mythical world Joni has invented where everyone else knows all the answers to all the "big" questions. It is inhabited by "real" people -- waitresses, truck drivers, the man at the next gas pump -- as opposed to the LA crowd and it is located out on the road somewhere. At the end of the first stanza she's decided the waitress is enlightened / has found the meaning of life / is residing in Joni's mythical Barangrill and she asks her to "Show me the way to Barangrill." In the second stanza we have the service station play on words. At face value it's saying that "it's (the meaning of life is) in service" and "humble makes pure" as if being of service (waitress) was a way to cleanse one's spirit. But her current course has Joni headed for folly. Then Joni laughs at herself and realizes it's more about mythical qualities she has projected upon the waitress than any wisdom the waitress may actually possess ("her mirrors and your will"). The use of mirrors remind me of a later song where she uses the experience again (from Refuge of the Road __ "he mirrored me back simplified"). She's had an almost comical religious experience -- the Church Of The Waitress. By the last stanza she's come to view the whole experience of Barangrill as what it is -- a snapshot of everyday life. I get the sense that she feels this world may be more real than the one she normally inhabits in LA and "some longing gets filled" just by associating with these people. She has received some sort of psychic sustenance and by the time she leaves she's not even asking about Barangrill anymore. This song works on so many levels at once. What at first listen seemed to be the least complex song on the album happens to be quite complex. I bet Joni had fun writing this song. That's how it works for me in two minutes or less. Barangrill.> Joni said, >>Well, some say it's in service They say, "Humble makes pure.">> I never noticed it before Catherine isolated those lines and capitalized Humble, but... before it became Exxon, the company was called "Humble," at least in Ohio. Here's the blue, oval logo: http://web.ivenue.com/keepsakecollectibles/images/humble.jpg Maybe Joni noticed the earlier logo, just as she stood 'neath that giant Exxon sign and name-checked "Exxon blue". Rose'?> There's more. In Ohio where I grew up, there was a regional oil company called "Pure Oil". Here's the blue, circular logo: http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/u/us~pure6.gif I may be reading too much in the lyrics, but there's other humor in Barangrill: The title is a play on words and she has that double meaning with "Folly". Do you suppose she built a list of words associated with truck stops, then used as many as possible, as a writing exercise? Jim L. - --------------------------------- All-new Yahoo! That was Bree and me. We were watching you long before you noticed us. We wanted to get in, but your window was shut. Is it true that "no dreams can possess you..."? We were screeching out our promises not to steal your Cheetos. We know that hunger is human and humans are hungry... for worlds they can't share. That's why we flew by. But you were saying too many silver-fine dinners alone... and sandcastles crumble. And you kept asking "where are the footprints that danced on these beaches?" No voices can blame you. The tide is only 8 hours away... soon it will have to come back in, and there will be fresh sand to dance on again, but will there be dancing?
