It leads me to artists i've not heard and it also makes me pleased to see other people listening to music that i love. And Mr Muller is one that always seems to be listening to something interesting. I have been to a few gigs recently myself Bob, so thought i'd just mention them. I saw Radiohead a little while back. I was very pleased with this show. Until about three years ago i was a huge radiohead fan, so i was afraid that they would not bea s good as i thought they were at the time. They were fantastic. Beck was the support act. I love Beck. I really thought the audience would also be into Beck but it seemed that most people could not be too bothered. This was a great gig. They had a puppet show centre stage which mimicked the band, it was hilarious. I just hope Mr Beck Man comes back to Ireland soon. I went to a festival called electric picnic (check out the full lineup on their website www.electricpicnic.ie). I lvoed Devendra Banhart. He is so sexy. His set was great. I went to this one on my own as my friends did not know him. Actually, i went to a few things alone for that reason. Antony & the jonsons were fantastci too. They did about four new songs which sounded very promising. Massive attack were very6 good. The sound was amazing. Jonathan thought it was one of the highlights, CIan thought it was shite. I liked it. PJ was not good. She performed alone, and it didn;t seem that this was the initial plan. Just her and a dodgy sounding electric guitar. The real reason i did not enjoy it is that it was in one of hte smaller tents so most people did not get it. I left during it. Damien Rice was not much better. it pains me to say this as i love PJ and Damo. Yup, the southern comfort cocktails were more attractive than either. DJ Shadow can go and shite next time ,as we say in ireland. That sucked big time. The audience were going wild for nothing at all. Really dull. Hot Chip were good too, would like to ssee them at their own gig but that's sold out i believe. Some guy called Jim Noir was good. I will look him up and see if he is good on cd too. Broken Social Scene were good but the audience did not seem very reactive. Yo La Tengo were great.Gary Numan was terrible. he was playing in a sort of NIN style and it just didn't work. Others did seem to love it though. Belle & Sebastien were great of course. Their set list was odd i suppose but i loved it. And New Order also. They were good except that so many people seemed to off their faces. Rufus W was great. I was worried because last time i saw him solo i was not bowled over. He was very good. The Pet Shop Boys were possibly the overall highlight for me. I was not even going to go to them. It was the campest, funniest, greatest thing ever. Basement Jaxx were good. Not great. I think the main stage was just too big for them. Plus we were miles back. So that's it. The toilets were dirty. There were urinals for girls. Ok, this is longer than it should be. Patt Smith at the Tate Modern last week. This was not the best gig ever. She was fairly rough i thought. Dermot thought that she could have chosen songs with tunes, lol. It was basically a tip of the hat to Robert Mapplethorpe. I'm glad i saw it but it won't really go down in history as anything great. There was a grat emotional content but the music didn't quite reach her highest standard and i thought she was very rude to man in the front row who took her picture. ("get taht f**king camera out of my face. you only need one picture. one is enough. i'm nearly sixty and i am definitely not that attractive". This was in the middle of a song. Ok, so she apologied, but still quite rude.) I was supposed to meet up with new JMDLer Benedicte but we got our wires crossed and never managed to actually meet. She did get to see the show though. As i said, next time i'll bring you to a Patti Smith rock gig, that never fails to please. Also, i had to give my scissor sisters ticket away as i'll be at a conference that day. I'm still sipped off about that. I'm nearly finished in work - two more days. Many a truth said in jest, Bob. From << http://www.statenews.com/article.phtml?pk=37592 >> Recruiter's 'Fun with Guns' plan denounced By HOLLY KLAFT The State News Events allegedly planned to recruit students to the Republican Party at the University of Michigan have both Republicans and Democrats across the nation stunned. Morgan Wilkins, an independent contractor hired by the College Republican National Committee to recruit students to the party, was described as planning events such as "Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day" and "Fun with Guns Day," in an article written Tuesday by The Michigan Daily. "Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day" would involve volunteers posing as illegal immigrants and hiding on campus while students try to find them for prizes. For the "Fun with Guns" activity, students would shoot cardboard cutouts of Democratic leaders with BB or paintball guns. U-M College Republicans Chairman Rob Scott said Wilkins was probably misinterpreted. "She was just speaking about different events that could occur," Scott said. "It was misrepresented in the article that we were planning the events on our campus." He said the U-M chapter never planned on organizing the events and would never host them. Members of the Michigan Democratic Party and the Democratic National Committee criticized the Republican Party, saying the events were "discriminatory" and "inexcusable." "These events are hurtful, mean-spirited and dangerous," said Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer in a press release issued Wednesday. "I never would have dreamed that a state party-sponsored organization would be simulating the death of Democratic leaders." Republican Party representatives agreed, saying they also find the events "appalling." "We definitely want to engage students, but not in this way," said Sarah Anderson, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Republican Party. "Every citizen in Michigan and across the country needs to be treated with respect, and while the activities get points for originality, they get no points for respect." Anderson said Wilkins is not associated with the Michigan Republican Party or the Republican National Committee, and her activities do not encompass the views of the party. MSU College Republicans Chairman and history senior Jeff Wiggins said he supports Wilkins and was shocked the Republican Party didn't stick up for her. He said The Michigan Daily probably misunderstood Wilkins, adding that events like the ones described would never be hosted by MSU College Republicans. Wiggins said he has never heard of similar events. Wilkins visited MSU on Monday for the College Republicans' Sept. 11 event, Wiggins said. MSU College Democrats President Karissa Chabot said it's a disgrace that anyone would use violence and racism to attract voters. "It's something the College Democrats don't support, and it's a game we don't play," said Chabot, a political theory and constitutional democracy senior. Paul Gourley, chairman of the College Republican National Committee, said it was not Wilkins' job to organize or plan activities. He also said the events she mentioned were only ideas discussed by some college students, and they would not be carried out. Gourley and representatives from the Michigan and national Republican parties, said they could not provide contact information for Wilkins. The committee has been in contact with Wilkins and will look into the events, Gourley said. . Tired of spam? Yahoo! The current conservatives' "fair and balanced" means "we'll do a thousand bad things and then make up one thing the Dems have done and then never stop pointing fingers at that one thing." It's a basic technique -- look over there. The Bushies use that technique all the time! So if you do a google search on "journalists paid by bush administration" and then a search on "journalists paid by clinton administration", it's obvious what a huge difference there is between what BushCo is doing and what the Clinton admin did. In the search about BushCo, there are many articles and news items, including a Sept 8, 2006 report about the U.S. government paying 10 journalists to write anti-Castro propaganda "news". http://go.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=13432694&src=rss/topNews Looks like Bush wasn't telling the truth in 2005 when his admin was caught paying journalists, and he said they'd stop that. "The policies should speak for themselves." (Sounds good, George; I agree.) So again, he said one thing and then sneakily went on doing exactly what he wanted. Not the first time, and probably not the last. His 800 or so executive signings are proof of that. No need for vetos of laws when you just sign the new laws, often with much media attention, and later privately sign a document that says you won't follow that law. In contrast to the long list of articles and news reports about the Bushies paying journalists, the one "on point" item that shows up in the Clinton list is from NewsMax, which is a right-wing site that either completely makes things up or takes one tiny bit of truth and makes a huge case from it, all geared to support their extreme right-wing viewpoint. That "fair and balanced" slogan is another "sounds good, not true" piece of conservative garbage. Not that I think you've fallen for it, Bob! Plenty of people have, though -- it's part of the Repubs' "keep 'em stupid" and not looking closely routine. Debra Shea, in NYC Tired of spam? Yahoo! I do, too. I'm most glad that the attention caused Scholastic to look at the material more closely and decide whether it was objective enough to be used as education material. It wasn't. I watched the part shown on Sunday night, and I thought, well, the first rule of storytelling is to never let the truth get in the way of a good story. They didn't. It was a biased viewpoint. There was nothing said about all the Repubs at the time and even some skeptical Dems wondering if Clinton's bombings were a "wag the dog" maneuver. And the scene where it was decided to not take a shot because of all the women and children nearby... oh, let's not worry about women and children. Easy to say now. At the time all this was happening, very few people knew bin Laden's name, so it wasn't like having him within striking range now would be. For dramatic purposes, though, it was made to seem that way (and, of course, we all now know what he did, and it's hard to see anything about the past without that in mind). Another thought I had while watching is that I don't see how the Repubs can claim that the Clinton administration did NOTHING to get bin Laden. If that was true, then there wouldn't be a movie. Even though bin Laden wasn't stopped, the whole movie was about all the efforts the Clinton admin was making to get the guy, and that was before most U.S. citizens even knew about the guy. Another thought was about how the movie looked... it was so jumpy and grainy it looked like they were trying for a "fly on the wall" viewpoint, as though it was a documentary. Some shots I liked just from a visual viewpoint -- the woman stomping down the hall and into a meeting, with the view from overhead. Nice shot. But then she's in the meeting with an overblown "you could have gotten them" line... not good acting, not a good script, cheesy stuff. I tried to keep watching, but the movie really didn't hold my attention very well. On Monday night I went to see the tributes in light, which seemed a much better way of marking the 9/11 anniversary. What do people here think about the recent opportunity to take a shot at the gathering of 190 taliban members, some of them high ranking? Supposedly it was because they were in a cemetery, but some military experts said that other concerns could override that. So, the taliban leadership gathered in a neat little group, had their picture taken by an overhead drone, and then they all dispersed. What's okay about that? Just wondering how Repubs excuse that inaction. Debra Shea, in NYC Tired of spam? Yahoo! Don't know exactly what to think of this post but will offer food for thought and that is: there are many in this world that would offer up lesbians as being scum and worthy of being killed. If you are, that is one of the scenes that was made up. It never happened. I won't defend Clinton, republicrat that he was. But even if what you say is true (and I thought Katrina was going to inflate gas prices for years when all those refineries dumped into the bayou), it seems to be a popular assumption, and just goes to show how very little trust people have in the White House vandals who took the handles. And it goes without saying that the oil companies (Bush's brethren) just like major media, have plenty to gain from kissing the royal tushie. "It's a warm arrangement", you might say. My fantasy: To wrap his blanks so tightly ....well....you get the picture. I heard... a bit to the left ... We think we know exactly how they stand on a particular issue or how they would feel about about this or that and a lot of the time it's not the case at all. I realize that certain religious extremists might agree with that idea, mack, but the distinction is easy to make: typically, most lesbians aren't engaged in violence against other human beings. If they are engaged in that sort of violence (other than, I suppose, consensual acts within the leather/B&D/S&M subculture), I'm all for offing them. Otherwise ... well, it's back to religious extremism, isn't it, and the question of whether it should be allowed to influence our laws? That said, the oligarchy that is the oil industry has been reaping enormous profit margins for a loooong time. My latest bit of paranoia about it goes like this. * Remember economic growth and inflation? We haven't heard much about either topic for a while. * The oil industry can afford to have the very finest economists if it would benefit them. It does. * When the spending power of the average Joe goes up a notch, Big Oil raises prices (in lock step of course). * Result: very low inflation but no appreciable growth in spending power either. I think Big Oil is doing the job that the Federal Reserve is supposed to do. Me? I'd rather see an increase in my standard of living when my efficiency increases. How come every improvement I make goes straight to higher gas prices? For me it was every bit as much "Woooowww-woooowwww-woooowwwww!!!" experience and I immediately got her cd from http://cdbaby.com/cd/katebennett Don't tell her I said so but, to tell the truth, personally, I feel about her cd sort of like I once felt about a young singer songwriter gal back when I was among the lucky few who got to see her prtform when her wandering brought her around to our coffeehouse... whose name was Joni. It's never very far from from my stero and I truly do consider it a classic on par with Tapestry, Sweet Baby James and For The Roses among others. I love it so much I've bugged the folks over at World Cafe' on NPR (National Public Radio) more than once to play selections from it because every time I'd listen to the show I couldn't help but think, "hey, if you're going to play great indies, you're missing out on one of the best!".
