It took me less than a second to fall in love again with you. (I never stopped loving you anyway - it's was more like a second honeymoon:). I realized that the main thing that's documented there, beside Joni's work, is the love and friendship we share. Were you angry with someone in Oct. 2001? Don't worry - you became the closest friends in Sep. 2003. Are you caught in a debate with someone right now? Then you shouldn't be because in 1999 both of you really agreed on something. That girl you didn't like during the summer of 2002? You started dating her during the winter of 2004. Did you miss someone when he suddenly signed off the list in 1998? He's suddenly back in 2001. Is there someone you're just dying to kill since 2003? Don't even bother - by the beginning 2008 you'll be his best pal. And that man no one replied to in 2000? He was a huge hit in 1999!:) So if you should ever feel blue - go back and take a look at that amazing photo album of people holding hands and dancing this crazy dance together. You took that photo and you're in it too. Nuri - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. The study was pretty easily disproved (again, based on what I read and saw on news shows) because the abortion rate has been steadily declining since 1984, and at the same time the crime rate fell during the 1990s because of the hopeful economic climate along with Clinton's funding to put more policeman on the streets (at least that's my understanding of the reasons; conservatives may disagree because they can't give Clinton credit for anything good). As an interesting aside: The abortion rate rose slightly in 2002, and then, poof, the Bushies said that stats on the number of abortions were no longer to be collected by the CDC (Center for Disease Control). The CDC compiles statistics on everything (did you know that more babies are born on Tuesday than on Sundays?) and had been collecting stats on the number of legal induced abortions every year since 1969. But one little blip upward and BushCo stops that... trying to keep us ignorant again. With less healthcare for woman and a lousy economy, I expect both crime and the number of abortions are going up. No wonder the Bushies don't want stats collected. One other little thing I recall about the reaction to Bennett's remark is one talking head saying that if there are fewer people (regardless of their race), then there would be fewer crimes and the study falls on its face on that basic fact. So does my understanding of that study match what you learned by reading the book?<< I replied to Debra, not the list, thinking her reply was sent only to me. Here is what I sent to Debra yesterday. Firstly, how strange that the CDC took an interest in abortions. Secondly, you mention things that were not mentioned in the book and I need to look at the book again in a little detail to answer that. In essence, Levitt's remarks on crime were exclusively on one type of crime, and one type of criminal, the 'superpredator', and he deals with the basic conclusion in 3 pages of the introduction. He focuses on the reasons usually given for the drop (in crime) in the 90s (or the failure of an 'explosive' rise to appear) which are a) the rising economy, b) gun control laws, c) innovative policing. He dismisses these reasons lightly and claims Roe vs Wade was the real reason. In chapter 4 he comes back to this in detail and gives the explanation as follows with the number of citations in the Lexis-Nexis database: 1 - Innovative policing strategies (52 citations) 2 - Increased reliance on prisons (47) 3 - Changes in crack and other drug markets (33) 4 - Aging of the population (32) 5 - Tough gun control (32) 6 - strong economy (28) 7 - Increased number of police (26) 8 - all other explanations (34, includes increased use of capital punishment, concealed weapons laws, gun buybacks etc) Levitt spends the next 22 pages eliminating all the above explanations and voila, he is left only with his abortion argument. Without knowing what stats he used (they're listed in the index) and where the flaws are in what he used (and what he chose not to use) he makes a pretty good case but then I could make a good case if I had time and stats and a desire to make a heap of money. On a superficial level (i.e. 99.9% of the readers of this book) his theory holds water, but who's going to do the legwork to disprove it? I thought maybe somebody (bell hooks, Cornell West? Gates jr?) would have done it but if they have, I haven't seen it. I'll leave it there for the moment, and I'll try to look into it some more in the future, but if you come across anything while mooching around, I'd be happy to hear about it. New priorities now, the holidays are over and it's back to teaching and translating next Tuesday. mike in bcn NP Jeff Buckley - I want somebody badly ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Sep 2006 16:25:14 +0000 From: "Michael O'Malley" Subject: NjC Clinton's TO birthday bash According to the Globe & Mail, Bill Clinton will be hosting yet another party to mark his 60th in Toronto tonight. And when CBS dropped it from being shown, I heard no cries > of the First Amendment over that. I heard a number of cries from people on the right who felt it should not be censored. However, there is a huge difference between the two incidents. Reagan was dying and too incapacitated to defend himself. Nancy Reagan and his family personally protested the film along with other individuals, NOT official government representatives in CONGRESS and elsewhere! That show was what many thought a personal hit job, not a docudrama of a major historical event based on an official goverment investigation. Regardless, it was sent over to Showtime and showed a number of times thereafter, NOT edited or just completely banned from view. Republicans in Congressional positions did NOT write letters to CBS threatening to somehow pull their broadcast and licensing rights if they showed it. My primary understanding of the First Amendment is that CONGRESS may not abridge the freedom of speech. Individuals have the right to protest and exercise their free speech. Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. What is also so weird to me is that something like 200,000+ people who have not even seen Path to 9/11 are protesting it, not based on what they have viewed, but because they have been directed to do so. Disturbing to say the least. I have heard there is just as much if not more hard criticism of Bush and Rice in the series. What if they had waited to protest until they saw it? What if it really is not as negative against Clinton as they believe? What if it would have just been a non-issue? But no, the Democrats had to blow up this big deal about it and in the process step way over the line of government restraint and make themselves look probably far worse than would have been portrayed in the film. It was just announced that the California Senate passed our Student & Family Privacy Protection Bill, and its success bodes well for similar efforts against intrusive military recruiting in other states. Can you help again on the last but final crucial hurdle? Please join us between now and September 30th in urging California Governer Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign A.B. 1778 by phone or e-mail. Introduced by Assemblywoman Lieber to make it easy for families to protect their privacy, the A.B.1778 bill requires that a military recruitment "opt out" be included on students' emergency information card. This will help California high schools avoid releasing private student information to military recruiters without the knowledge of their parents. Love and peace, Patti P., just home from a memorial service for my h.s. friend Sam...she was only 53...brain tumor...so so sad...but let me make that another post.... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2006 02:15:48 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: njc, interrupting my sorrow Bon soir, Joniami(e)s: Being only on "digest", I feel a little funny popping in here sometimes, not knowing what is the topic du jour....what is being discussed or argued about or laughed about, so please bear with me for being a little heavy right now. (Will you take me as I am?) My friend Sam's memorial service today was so beautifully bittersweet...shadows and light....laughing and crying...eyepaint running down (Merde!! I forgot to bring kleenex!). "We can't return, we can only look behind from where we came." And today I looked behind, from where I came. It was a trip seeing so many high school classmates, straining to see who was who -- in a crowded, classic white New England congregational church full of sad people in their Sunday best -- throughout the years and the graying hair. I won't bore you with all of it, I promise, but I just want (need) to share a few highlights. Just two. The first is a Joni highlight. (Quoi d'autre!) My old college roommate Mike was there, and it was so wonderful to see him. It's been many dim years, but the love is still there. Big time. As we were catching up, I told him about the JMDL and my JMOCD, and he laughed. Then he got serious. He said: "You know, when I heard Sam died, I put a Joni CD in my car CD player, because Sam always liked Joni. But instead of thinking of Sam, it made me think more of YOU! You were ALWAYS putting on Joni albums!" The other highlight relates to music, too. At the end of the service, a spouse of another old friend read some lines from "Ripple"...it was perfect. Not your normal funeral reading, but poignant, and perfect. He remembered how Sam loved music (and art, and literature, and children, and you know....) and he said he heard "Ripple" on his car radio this week....not a song you usually hear on the radio, you know? Sometimes that just happens, when you are in this spiritual zone....everything just kind of comes together and it's all so crazy and connected. So, NPIMH still, I share this with you: "Ripple" Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia. If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung Would you hear my voice come through the music Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken Perhaps they're better left unsung I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air (Chorus) Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow Reach out your hand if your cup be empty If your cup is full may it be again Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men There is a road, no simple highway Between the dawn and the dark of night And if you go no one may follow That path is for your steps alone (Chorus) You who choose to lead must follow But if you fall you fall alone If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home - -------- Beautiful. Googling those lyrics led me to this site: http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/ripple.html which has been my reading for the past half hour or so. Good stuff. Sorry. I'm all emotions and abstractions. Okay, enough from me. I think I'm going to go have a good cry, for Sam's sweet husband Dave and their beautiful daughter Rebecca. (NPIMH: her sobs) (Which makes me think of Sara, Jack's daugher...hoping she's holding up...sending up my prayer) But before I sign off, just one more thing, okay? With all heart and humility (not too much humour ce soir), I suggest that you just might want to call an old friend today. Shower the people. Thanks for letting me cry on your knees.
