No, I am not for a National Health Service. Far more people will die or go without proper health care if that is ever instituted. I have friends in some countries who have National Health care and they wait for months and months to be checked for serious conditions. Even in those countries, many people obtain supplemental private insurance so they won't be left out when a serious condition arises. Also, you will have a shortage of skilled doctors under such a plan and will probably have to institute some kind of government conscription to "draft" enough doctors to handle the load, including paying all their medical school tuition through more taxes on the public. Cheap health care is available to everyone. I have posted numerous times about this including sending information to resources where you can get good cheap coverage through major carriers (and know four people who are either self-employed or low income who subsequently signed up for it. If you can't get or afford health insurance, believe me, free medical care is always available. I know three people who had major medical conditions (brain tumor, serious liver and neurological disease and serious injuries from an accident) who did not have insurance and could not afford to pay yet had some of the best doctors in CA treat them for FREE. It was paid for by a combination of Medicare, state MediCal and charitable funds set up for that purpose. Thousands and probably millions of illegal immigrants in this country get all their medical needs paid for simply by showing up at any hospital in the country. If they can get treatment you've got to believe citizens can get it, too. Why anyone would want the government to get involved in our health care is beyond me when you think about the downside of bureaucratic cultures. >Or do you support G W Bush in blocking all cheap drugs being imported from >Canada???? Awhile back a very educated person here set out official statistics from the Congressional Budget Office. Guess who is the poorer group in per capita income by a large margin? Republicans! It was something like $36,000 year average income for Republicans versus $45,000 a year average for Democrats. > ie Katrina in New Orleans, Oh please, don't you keep up with the news on this? More money (which of course includes money from Republican taxpayers) has been sent to Louisiana than was provided to the victims and cleanup for 9/11. More money has been sent from charities than ever previously given in any other natural disaster. Investigations have just started and have found $70 million has ripped off so far and that is only the tip of the iceberg. A question rarely asked is why Mississippi, who had more destruction from Katrina that New Orleans, is rebounding successfully. I've said it here before, but most of my relatives are from there and they just spit and rage all the time. You cannot have any rational discussion with them. Jordan Pierson, 21, of Milford, was a full-time UConn student during last year's fall semester. He lived on the second floor of Colt in Towers. Pierson put his studies on hold to go fight the war in Iraq. His unit is scheduled to return to Connecticut in October. Friends say he was planning to return to UConn for the spring semester. While on foot patrol in Fallujah on Friday, Pierson was shot once through the shoulder by hostile gunfire, according to the Hartford Courant. He was pronounced dead at 12:12 p.m. Iraqi time. News of his death quickly spread to students...... ******************* The rest of the story is here, along with his picture. A fresh-faced KID, who could be any mother's (or father's) son. Twenty-one years old. I pray for his family. http://media.www.dailycampus.com/media/storage/paper340/news/2006/08/30/News/A.Fallen.Husky-2251651.shtml?sourcedomain=www.dailycampus.com&MIIHost=media.collegepublisher.com&mkey=2200900 How many more? (What's the countdown at now, Bob and Mack?) I wish the students -- here, and everywhere -- would wake up and rise up and speak out. Wage peace, wage peace, wage peace........
