Holy Shit! It's funny sad. He reads a passage in a clever Time Magazine article linking Joni's views on Art to a line in one of her songs, but he is so ignorant about culture and human history that he totally misunderstands the reference to Art (human expression through representation), instead believing it's a "male muse" named "Art." Crazy! The thing that goodfight.org creator, Pastor Joe, and so many other religious zealots have in common is a deep and driving ignorance. They know a little bit about a few things, they have active minds and they think they can reason. What he has -- along with all those other ignoramuses all over the world, including the one in the White House -- is the capacity to bullshit. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. "Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. "You have heard that it was said, `AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.' "But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. "If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. "Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. "Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. "You have heard that it was said, `YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.' "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Now which single part of this equates to OUr current Adminstration, I think the Jury is out on God where is the proof, A College did a study on Praying through the last 6 years and they found that 78% of all praying does not achieve there goals. and look at Cambodia and the Holocaust and the Global Economy yes the Global Economy, ask yourself who benifits from this, do we, no!!! its the Rich and the Richer that benifit from the Global Economy, and yet its portrayed to us as our salvation for the future, By this current Administration who porports to get its divine inspiration from GOD Im sorry but if GOD supports the Global Economy then there is something wrong somewhere.Going back to the thread title I wish GOD's supporters would come forth and condem everything Republican and to a certain extent Tony Blair hated by his own party, but they dont do they this leaves my impression of GOD very confused, and to think you would stop listening to Joni because of this. If you ask me Joni has given people throughout the world, solace, enjoyment, pleasure, hope, and inspiration in her song writing, surely a Christian gift to us all. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2006 15:20:07 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: RE: Bob Dylan - Modern Times NJC I bought this on vinyl as well as deluxe CD/DVD and I've listened to it on the vinyl which I got last Friday. Rewind the tapes in a dizzying blur of car wheels and cartwheels and damned hockey games and painted ponies going up and down and dragonflies in jars to the beginning of one precious soul's circle game..... WHEN: August 30, 1978, 9:42 a.m. WHERE: one of the first "home-like" hospital birthing rooms in the U.S.A. Manchester (Ashara's old home town!), CT WHAT: After five days of on-and-off-again false labor, and then ten intense hours of Lamaze "heee heeee heeee heee heeeee" breathing and deeeeep cleansing breaths and staring a hole at a focal point over and over again, finally the monitrice exclaims: "I see the head! One more gentle push....." and "IT'S A BOY!!!!!" Well, no. I mean, yes, it was a boy, but those weren't the *exact* words. The doctor said: "It's a funny-looking Caitlin." (Huh!? What!? Sheesh...make me have to THINK after all THAT?!) It *slowly* dawns on me. It's a boy. It's a boy. Oh. My. God. Today I celebrate my son Christopher Patrick's 28th birthday. (NPIMH: "I just want to celebrate, another day of living...I just want to celebrate another day of LIFE...) The years have indeed spun by and he's now living in the "Land of the Tolls". (Yes, he's the son who listened to Jack's CD with me on the ride into Chicago that day in July when we heard the sad news.) Call me crazy, call me twisted, but I feel such connectivity with everyone and everything just at this moment of the world. And of course the duality.....death and birth and death and birth. I'm sorry Jack is no longer here on earth for his mother, and for his daughter. I'm sorry my dad is not here on earth. (He was the very first person I called from the delivery room. I hadn't remembered that until today.) I'm also thinking about the war. After all these years of a child to raise, when these precious children turn twenty, a mother would send them off to war??? I don't know how one could. I really don't know. Feeling pretty deep today between the forceps and stone, I guess. Peaceful blessings to all, Patti P. NPIMH: This beautiful song that I played over and over again for WEEKS after we brought Chris home from the hospital. I can close my eyes and still feel him in my arms as we danced and swirled around our little living room to this: FIRST BORN (words and music by Kate McGarrigle/Garden Court Music ASCAP) The silver spoon's in the mouth Baby clothes are baby-blue Nothing's ever handed down Everything's brand new Newspaper notices heralding that great event Daddy's buddies send the flowers Mother's friends have baby showers Welcoming that Heaven sent That first born son is always the one The first to be called and the last to come He's his mother's favorite, his grandmother's too He'll break their hearts and he'll break yours too For he's the first to creep and the first to crawl The first to walk and the first to fall Every bruise is kissed, every cry is heard Every doubt's cast out with a soothing word 'Cause he's that first born son, he's that special one No matter what comes next, no matter what comes along Be it another boy or a sweet baby girl The family's the oyster and he is the pearl Some of them make it, some of them don't Some of them can't, others won't grow up In the bible of old, according to Exodus Every first born son of a Jew got axed But the one who survived with the help of God's hand Led his people to the promised land Yes he's that first born son, he's that son of a gun Just hates to walk, just loves to run He loves to run as fast as he can With life held tight in the palm of his hand ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2006 13:46:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: RE: Bob Dylan - Modern Times NJC wow it comes on vinyl??? I was a wreck from all the emotion - I was in the delivery room when he was born and after the doctor and I cleaned him up and got the goop out of him I walked him down to where all the newborn babies were with the incubators and all, surrounded by babies, and yelled out "Here's something y'all haven't seen in a while - it's a BRAND NEW BABY!!" Every other door in the maternity ward had blue or pink ribbons on it - ours had Bruce's "Born In The USA" album jacket taped to it. It's also available as a cd/dvd set with 4 songs on vid Just heard 2 songs on the radio, sounded pretty good. People in the outdoor seats stayed thru the rain. Dan had tenor and alto, trumpet and trombone in backline, John Herrington (of course) and a second keyboard. Two singers including Carolyn Leonhart who he has used for years. I don't have any more of the personnel. This was like 'Sing Along Dan' especiaily toward the end and thru the encores. We walked away from the shed just a little prematurely, and I could hear the audience singing My Old School as loud as the band.... I hadn't seen lighters in a long time. I held up my cellphone. I think the band really enjoyed the gig too....Fagan had sandbagged me via the press into thinking everything was going to be culled from Morph the Cat and Two against nature, but actually it's pretty clear that was all smoke, and they are giving us what everyone most wanted to hear. Maybe Fagen will take off on his own and play some smaller venues with that material. Bob NP: Little Feat, "Spanish Moon" Tired of spam? Yahoo! Sounds great. He did take credit for Rollin' and Tumblin' however. An old blues tune I first heard Johnny Winter do in 69 or so. Dylan definitely did NOT write that one. Also another song sounds just like Trouble No More that the Allmans did. I don't remember if they wrote that or not. Still a really good album for old Bob and he is singing more clearly than I could believe. I could understand nearly every word even in my car where I now do most of my listening. Steve Anderson ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2006 10:07:19 +1000 From: Melissa Gibbs Subject: Cover of Woodstock Hi there Melissa from Sydney here, de-lurking to post about a new cover of Woodstock on an Australian album titled "Rockwiz duets". Apologies for the long post, but I'm a fan of Rockwiz and some of you may be interested in the background. Rockwiz is an edgy TV show broadcast on SBS - Australia's multicultural and multilingual public broadcaster. From some pomotional material: "Rockwiz is the illustrious music quiz show recorded live in Melbourne's Gershwin Room at The Esplanade Hotel. RocKwiz explores the weird and wonderful world of rock and roll and is hosted by Julia Zemiro, adjudicated by Brian Nankervis, and has scores held aloft by Dugald the handsome roadie. Two contestants on each team are audience members who have proved their rock brain credentials in a pre-show quiz. Two singers, emerging from behind plush velvet curtains, perform a song each and join the fun when they are correctly identified from a set of cryptic clues. The game proceeds with four rounds of questions and answers and climaxes with the two singers performing a duet, backed by the superbly talented RocKwiz Orkestra." Anyway, a new CD has been released titled 'Two For The Show' and features a selection of the best 19 of the duets. Included among these is a terrific version of Woodstock by James Reyne and Mia Dyson. James is the former front man of a band called "Australian Crawl" - very popular with Australian teens in the late 70s/80s. James Reyne has gained a bit of credibility recently. Mia Dyson is an up and coming artist categorised in the folk/blues category - she lists Lucinda Williams as a huge influence - definitely someone to watch. This Woodstock recording is more like the CSNY version. The album also contains a terrific cover of Roxy Music's "Slave to Love" by Martha Wainwright and someone else whose name escapes me now. I'm anxious to hear the cover as well as everything else on the disc. (Maybe you know that I'm cuckoo for covers?) Bob NP: Beth Orton, "Galaxy Of Emptiness" Tired of spam? Yahoo! LOL....leave it to you, Musik Meister, to have a tape all prepared. "You, baby, nobody but you!" (Turtles). I can just see you and Val, halfway to the hospital, and then you pulling a U-turn when you realize you forgot the tape! Contractions two minutes apart -- so what! Gotta get the music! (Nah, that wouldn't happen. It was packed in your Lamaze bag for weeks!) I did not have music in the birthing room, but we had a great musical connection during my pregnancy. We used to go see a local band, Eight to the Bar, ALL the time. They played at our wedding, and we'd see them a few times a week. (Jeff Pevar was in that band for a time!) When they learned I was pregnant, they would always dedicate a song to the unborn baby....usually "Bottle Baby Boogie" or "Sweet Inspiration." I was such a fan that my friends kept saying: "When Patti's baby is born it's going to come out singing: 'Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar'. Well, LOL, of course he did not come out singing, but he weighed eight pounds even, so everyone who came to visit called him the "Eight to the Bar Baby." Wish I had thought to tape their album cover to the door like you did w/ Bruce's...oh well, I was kinda preoccupied, I guess. ETTB is still together. I went to their 25th anniversary gig last year. And quelle coincidence, Smurf used to see them, too, back in the day. They were -- and are -- great. You'd love them too, Muller -- they play all kinds of stuff. Andrews Sisters, Asleep at the Wheel (that's where I first heard "Space Buggy", Randy!), Blue Bayou, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, you name it. They even did a great Joni cover -- Raised on Robbery. Go to Eighttothebar.com if you have time and check out their album/CD "Behind the Eight Ball" -- there's a song there called "If My Mama Could See Me Now" (abbreviated to "If Mama Could") that always reminds me of Myrtle Anderson (who did not like Joni's kick pleat skirt and her eyelids painted green, etc.) Okay, gotta go call my Eight to the Bar Baby to wish him a happy birthday. Hope your "Born in the U.S.A. Baby" has a great junior year!
