Well, the flag-draped coffins aren't being shown, are they? Because the logic would be obvious: the lives of our children are not worth the "gain," particularly this time around. 'fess up, one of you has it! http://winnipegsun.com/News/Canada/2006/08/26/1777722-sun.html Does Joni's face adorn your wall? Police hunt for bronze mask Joni Mitchell's immortal verse, "You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone," might best apply to Don Freed's predicament. A bronze mask of the influential Canadian singer's face is missing and Freed, a Winnipegger and her former flame, is trying to get it back. "It could be hanging on the wall of someone's rumpus room and they don't even know what it is, or maybe someone knows very well what it is and the value and cultural significance of it," said Freed, a 57-year-old professional singer and songwriter. Mitchell gave the mask to Freed in 1994 during their eight-year relationship. It went missing when he tried to give it back in 2005 following a chance meeting in her former hometown of Saskatoon. Freed left the mask, wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in a shoebox along with a letter, at the Delta Bessborough Hotel's front desk. Freed and Mitchell, 62, realized the mask was missing in May when she told him it wasn't delivered to her hotel room. Saskatoon police are looking into the disappearance. "Some mistake has been made or something nefarious has happened," said Freed, a married father of a young girl. "At first I was very angry and dismayed, now I'm just hoping that with some public awareness it may turn up." Saskatoon police Staff Sgt. Kirby Harmon said officers don't know if the mask was stolen. Anyone with information about the missing mask is asked to call Harmon at 1-306-975-8448. Staff at Delta Bessborough don't remember accepting Freed's package, but the hotel isn't disputing his claim, general manager Andrew Turnbull said. Turnbull said he recently met with Saskatoon police, and the hotel is co-operating during the investigation. "We certainly provided them the names of people that were working that day to see if they can jog anybody's memory," Turnbull said. "To date, nothing has come of that." Freed said he's disappointed because he didn't snap a picture of the mask. "It's got every nuance of her face on it," Freed said. "Anybody who's aware of her can look at it and know who it is." He said Mitchell, a Grammy Award-winning performer, wasn't upset the mask is missing. A Toronto woman made it in 1985 from a plaster mould of Mitchell's face. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2006 12:47:19 -0700 From: Subject: Mermaid Cafe - Joni in Islands After 23 years of reading Islands, my two favorite subjects have finally converged ;-) From September/October 2006 Islands Magazine: MERMAID CAFE - Dana Kennedy I'ts been 35 years since Joni Mitchell sang "Come on down to the Mermaid Cafe and I will/buy you a bottle of wine/and we'll laugh and toast to nothing/and smash our empty glasses down" in her timeless song "Carey." The Mermaid Cafe was the epicenter of a colony of hippies who lived in the sandstone caves lining the beach near the town of Matala, on the southern coast of Crete in the late 1960s. Mitchell spent a few months there. The cafe closed in 1980, but man-about-town Dimitris Houstoulakis says he fields questions daily from travelers seeking the famous gathering place - a place as mythical as Matala's ancient caves where Mitchell also hung out. "People come here and they can feel how it was," says Houstoulakis, who owns the popular Dimitris Villa Hotel. The Mermaid cafe may be gone - the taverna Delfini is now in that building - but, like the song says, the wind is still "in from Africa." Today, capture the hippie vibe at the nearby tavernas of Nikos in the village of Pitsidia, or at Vafis in Sivas. (There is a color photo of the beautiful caves and a small B&W photo of Joni playing her guitar.) ************************** Possible future Jonifest location? Don't know if you are already on to this but I highly recommend a listen to Sergio Mendes' new album, Timeless, for some real mind blowers. In this case, it is samba and bossa nova crossing over - blending Sergio's original songs with hip hop and rap sensibilities. I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl a couple of months ago with most all of the artists listed in the blurb below (including India.Arie) and it was QUITE amazing. Herb Alpert and the original Brasil 66 girl singers, Lani Hall and Gracinha Leporace, also performed several songs at the show. This is my favorite music on earth and I loved what they brought to it. From Amazon.com: Timeless is the magnificent new album by the legendary Sergio Mendes. Produced by and featuring Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, this album is a wholly original synthesis of music from the man who--40 years ago--brought Brazil 66 and "Mas Que Nada" to the world. Timeless beautifully blends the urban culture of Brazil, samba and bossa nova with the urban culture of America, hip hop and rap, the results of which are truly spectacular. Putting together the project, Will and Sergio, of course, brought in the Black Eyed Peas. They also recruited some of the biggest urban-pop artists of the last several decades, each a Sergio fan, to contribute to various tracks. Featured artists include Erykah Badu, Justin Timberlake, India.Arie, Q-Tip, John Legend, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, and members of the Roots and Jurassic 5. That is just so bizarre that it has to be true. It was in the NY Daily News, after all. I'm having a hard time trying to decide whether to make jokes about this or to be righteously indignant. What a moral dilemma. On the one hand, I wonder if her parents abused her. On the other hand, "Spanking Carly" sounds like it could be the name of a funky indie movie, or a new expression for "spanking the monkey" or whatever it is (among so many expressions) that's a euphemism for what some used to call self-abuse (abuse?) This will probably prompt a number of Carly appearances on talk shows. Does she have a new album out by any chance? "Oh, never > mind". Emily fails to show up for her spot on Weekend Update. Exasperated Jane Curtin calls her on the phone.: Voice from phone: 'Hello. You have reached Emily Litella. I can't come to the phone right now. But you can leave a message after the jeep.' Curtin: 'That's beep, you stupid old woman! Beep!' Voice from phone: 'Oh! Well! That's very different!.....Never mind.' Curin: 'You stupid old woman.' Voice from phone (as Jane is hanging up): 'Bitch.' Jane Curtin as Joan Crawford, Gilda as Christina Crawford and Lorraine Newman as Katharine Hepburn in a spoof of 'Mommie Dearest' Any time Gilda appeared as Roseanne Roseannadanna.
