Cassy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 15:04:34 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: CSNY in the casino I am surprised to hear that CSNY played in the casino in CT. Croz is really outspoken in these parts due to our situation with casinos & their expansion & the methods involved in doing so (those who oppose casinos often point to what has happened in CT) & and last year he went to Washington DC to speak in front of congress I think. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 14:58:21 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: music today The perennial debate when someone claims there is no good music around like there was in (fill in a decade but usually it is the 60-70s that is mentioned). Usually this statement comes from someone who grew up during those times (I did too). However, as good as some of that music was I do think it is hard to separate the state of being young & the emotional & mental freedoms that come with youth (and the whole world ahead of us feeling) with some of that music. I don't think the quality of music has changed today as much as the biz that allows the good stuff to be heard. And in my mind, playing in stadiums is no measure of quality, only a measure of popularity or of a trend. I saw the stones in the late 60s or early 70s in a big place but certainly not a stadium. You couldn't pay me to go to one of those concerts anymore. Well, on the other hand I did go to Joni's (with Bob & Van) & I'd go to the Beatles (if they were resurrected) but that is about it. To me a good song is a good song and there are many many of those being released by amazing artists you would never know about unless you are part of the alternative music listening audience. Anyway, to not even be open to discovering new artists outside of mainstream media is a sorry state indeed. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 15:57:11 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: military matters njc I agree it was a horrible time. I disagree that this issue comes up because people want to have bigger protests & reasons to be outraged. I think the reason you hear it being brought up periodically is because it actually was a bill before congress a couple of years ago (this is from memory so I may not have it totally accurate- but something about it being brought up purposely so it would be knocked down)... anyway there is an email that keeps going around which speaks to this... but it isn't a complete hoax, it is based in reality... those who bring it up are not doing it out of wanting a draft, they are doing it out of fear for their children (at least the people I know) ... but this administration has found a way around the draft... the recruiting methods (obtaining information from the schools without parents knowing & the large sums of money promised to children if they enlist and many other promises not always kept)is incredibly sleezy >And I am so sick of hearing that somehow the draft is going to be reinstated. It's almost like some people WANT this to happen so we can have even bigger anti-war protests and more opportunities to be outraged just like back in the day. Believe me, that was a horrible, horrible time. If people think now is so horrible, they have no idea what it was like back then. I'm not trying to single you out, Bob. I've just been hearing this for so long and it really gets me. We don't need a draft! The only way I could ever see that happening again is if we are literally invaded or besieged on all sides. Kakki < ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 16:03:33 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: dylan's opinion njc Ha, Dylan is in his 60's & has been playing loud music for decades. Methinks it is his hearing, not the music, that is impaired. I can't stand it when artists say things like this, dissing everything (including his own records in the last 20 years?) with one stroke... in spite of crosby's (david) flaws he is the most enthusiastic & positive guy when it comes to praising people of all decades & abilities for their music >If you're referring to Dylan's recent interview where he talked about modern music, I took it to mean that the quality of the recordings themselves - the production - that is no good, not necessarily the music itself. "I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past twenty years, really. You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them. There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like -- static." http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/11216877/the_modern_times_of_bob_dyla n_a_legend_comes_to_grips_with_his_iconic_status/1 Catherine Toronto> ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 16:22:58 -0700 From: Subject: Military matters (njc) Bob wrote: >But haven't our own General and Military leaders gone on record as saying >that we haven't sent in enough manpower to get the job done? And who were most of these military leaders that have said this? Recently retired or un-promoted and probably part of the ongoing downsizing. They have axes to grind, especially against Rumsfeld. Common sense can tell you that we don't successfully fight modern wars, or in particular this war, with big battalions of troops. This war is asymetrical. The combatants on the other side are not easily identifiable and are for the most part suicide bombers. I think we need more intelligence resources and special ops personnel involved. >Which of course brings up the million-dollar question - just what is the >mission anyway? To get the WMD's that were never there? Never there? There is at least 20 years of evidence that he had them and used them. If they were never there, why did the UN countries say they did and have sanctions against Iraq and frequently bomb them throughout the 1990s? What was all that about if it never existed? Some people think part of the mission is also to establish a "western flank" around Iran. Our presence in Afghanistan being the "eastern flank." >To establish a western-style democracy in a Theocracy? No, although some citizens of Iraq would certainly like to have a democracy (and not necessarily western style) and have voted for it a couple of times now. Saddam was a supporter of terrorism groups and the list of evidence is long and widely available for reference. >The Shiites want a Shiite government, the Sunnis want a Sunni government, >the Kurds want their own >nation. How do you build a Democracy from that? I don't know. It is up to them. >We have to leave them to settle their own form of government or else it's >not going to stick. I agree and hope they do not fall into having another fascist dictator taking power. As for recruiting kids in college, at least those kids have a choice and are not automatically being swept away into service like back in the '60s and early 70s. If they are too naive to know what they are getting into by being attracted to the military, their family and friends can and should certainly dissuade them. Plus, not everyone who enlists is automatically sent off to the infantry. There are plenty of other specialties, high tech, intelligence, support , etc. that need to be filled. I don't think the military wants unwilling soliders. That is why the idea of a draft is so bad. As for the reservists, I know of two personally who got released from having to serve and go to Iraq. They probably gave up some extra income for it, but they were able to get out of it. > I've always thought of you as a pal and I always will. The good >news is that we want the same stuff...a safer and secure America and >World, and peace Yes, and thanks. I appreciate it. Now it's our turn. One thing I feel certain of: centuries from now people won't look at 60s-70s rock as anything special. Popular music, by its very nature, doesn't remain popular.
