Alas, it is an endlessly frustrating endeavor. I've been gifted with jars of just about every gourmet variety out there but they just don't do it for me. The best green I've ever had were homemade by a friend. I'd throw a small handful of them in the drink. I think keeping the stone in makes a big difference. Olive trees are everywhere in SoCal suburban lawnscapes and I wish I had the time and skill to harvest and cure my own. Olive "farms" are now rivaling vineyards here and they are starting tours and tastings and besting some of Italy's finest. Green peppers are only good for stuffing and Ranch dip. The red, yellow and orange are all divine, especially grilled with a little olive oil. There is nothing I love more than fried onions peppers. My family feasts on homemade Italian sausage and fried peppers and onions every Christmas Eve. A treat is an egg, peppers, and onions sandwich, just like my Grandmother Notaro used to make for me. Green are bitter, the others are sweeter, but the trick is to always include the green, just not as many. That said, I've never listened to an entire Whitney Houston album.... so maybe there ARE some down to earth tracks. See thats the thing, to me Whitney is not *of the earth*. Am I wrong? SJC I too feel that the 70's were a golden age for music and that has been borne out in meeting my guitar students who, a good 30-35 years younger than me, consistently ask to learn songs from that era. From a guitar perspective it was a brilliant decade, spanning Joni-style fingerwork to Jimmy Page-style electric playing. The whole fusion thing was exciting too (Mahavishnu, RTF, Weather Report etc) and people who were not players were digging it, something that would be very rare now. But I have to say there is brilliant music being made today also and lots of it; the problem is that the whole record business (here we go...yawn...) has become atomized and taken on a strictly bottom line mentality since the 70's. Call it the "post- Reagan business model". Artists such as Elton John, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and our beloved Joni did not do their best work on their debut albums. They needed an opportunity to grow into their musical maturity and that took a few albums worth of support from a label, who did not drop them the moment they failed to sell platinum. Jonatha Brooke, for example, whom I would rate as one of the finest of current artists, got unceremoniously dropped by her label while out on the road touring her 10c Wings album, her best but not her best selling....dumped high and dry while out on the road!!! Today, there can be no Elton John, David Bowie etc with a 35 year career: the labels simply would allow an artist to grow and be supported for more than 5-6 years. Bjork may be the exception that proves the rule as she made both a brilliant debut album and then followed her fascinating muse into uncharted waters with every subsequent release and is hugely popular around the globe. ON ipods: As a recording engineer I deplore the tendency toward trashy audio that mp3 players represent even as the audio profession is striving for ever better fidelity. BUT, and this is a big BUT, since getting my ipod I have bought and listened to probably 10 times more music per year than I have for the last twenty. And the AAC encoding that is used by Apple is far far superior to the sound of mp3. Don't use the crappy earbuds the ipod comes with and set your importing prefs to encode at a high bit rate and you can have a fine enveloping experience with the music without the smeared swirling sound of low bit rate mp3. And need I mention the practicality of being able to send music over the web? It will never equal listening in the living room to a DVD-A in surround (you have GOT to hear Seal IV that way -:) but the ipod is here to stay and although I too miss the ritual of perusing liner notes while taking in cover art and listening to a great album all the way through I really dig my ipod for times when I can't do that anyway-at the gym, in the car etc. And iTunes itself has been the biggest boon to my teaching I can imagine: anything I want to grab to illustrate a point is one click away from my chair. I feel almost exactly the opposite. "The Rising" was much anticipated and turned out to be disappointing to me. While I think you are probably right about "Devils and Dust" being less successful than "Nebraska" and "Tom Joad," I prefer them as albums to "The Rising." "The Rising," while much better than the twin flops "Human Touch" and "Lucky Town" only has moments of brilliance, the pre-9/11 song "My City of Ruins" being the most brilliant, but it's disappointing overall as a 9/11 statement (which was its main intention) and songs like "Mary's Place" sound like Springsteen imitating Springsteen to me. But then, nothing can touch the trio of albums: "The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle," "Born to Run," and "Darkness." If "The River" hadn't been bloated to a double album, it could have been four in a row. It was just a week ago that I was there rockin' in the free world with CSNY. The carousel of time has me on a rock'nrollercoaster lately. "No one can tell me that i'm doing it wrong today..." His website www.jamestaylor.com has only two audio clips (that I could find)....and one is "River"! Vive la Joan! The site seems rather new and perhaps incomplete (had trouble reading some text...it just kind of dropped off), but it does say that next he's going to Portland ME and then Albany NY. Is that too far for you, Marianne and Bree? (Speaking of NY towns, I think of Amsterdam and Rome, and I hope Le Smurf has fun with the friends and kin and campers in his kitchen this weekend. Put some flowers round your rooms!) It occurs to me that in the span of just eight days ("eight days a week"), I will have seen four of Joni's former, ummm, boyfriends! And tonight, as she supposedly once said, the best lover of all. I'll be thinking of you all. May your night be a starry dome! Love, Patti P., racing away and getting out my cane. Yeah, I hurt my knee, but whenever I have to grab the cane I sing to myself "Patti get out your cane" and then I feel a little better. Joni to the rescue again! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 04:26:09 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: njc, Sweet Baby James ce soir What a beautiful night with James Taylor! O holy night, the stars are brightly shining....(down on your knees, Ms. Marianne!) I leave you all with his last song, from his second encore, which is still playing in my head: Secret O' Life The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time. Any fool can do it, there ain't nothing to it. Nobody knows how we got to the top of the hill. But since we're on our way down, we might as well enjoy the ride. The secret of love is in opening up your heart. It's okay to feel afraid, but don't let that stand in your way. Cause anyone knows that love is the only road. And since we're only here for a while, might as well show some style. Give us a smile. Isn't it a lovely ride? Sliding down, gliding down, try not to try too hard, it's just a lovely ride. Now the thing about time is that time isn't really real. It's just your point of view, how does it feel for you? Einstein said he could never understand it all. Planets spinning through space, the smile upon your face, welcome to the human race. Some kind of lovely ride. I'll be sliding down, I'll be gliding down. Try not to try too hard, it's just a lovely ride. Isn't it a lovely ride? Sliding down, gliding down, try not to try too hard, it's just a lovely ride. The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time. Bon nuit, mes ami(e)s. You can close your eyes, it's all right.... Love and peace, Patti P. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2006 21:46:02 -0700 (GMT-07:00) From: Andeemac2006 Subject: India Arie -----Original Message----- >From: Victor Johnson >Subject: Re: India > I like India Arie a whole lot more than Whitney Houston. She does write all her songs and also did an amazing cover of "Heart of the Matter". She is as good as Sting, Joni Mitchell?? Jackson Browne whoever...you're missing my point. I'm not interested in comparing different artists to each other to see who is better. Its fruitless.. I am also open to hearing new stuff. Sometimes music takes time to gel. OK I will put it another way, Its a bit morbid but you cant stop the clock ticking!!!! When Elton John Rolling Stones, U2, Paul Macartney, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Bob Dylan, Santana, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Eagles, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Rod stewart, James Taylor, The who, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Prince, Van Morrison, Allman Brothers, and many old artists that came out of the 70's die or retire in 10 years time, (if you like, Joni) because they physically cant carry on there Musical carrears any more, Dont you think there is going to be a HUGE vacum in music. I mean when you get down to it I think we know which artists make the biggest Box office pay days dont we, and its not India ArieAnd who is going to play at the big Sports events or play for the President, or during Political campains, Dave Matthews ???? Some of you talk as though U2 is a century 2000 Band, they came to prominance in the late 70's.I Guess we will have to wait for this sorry event to happen in about 10 years time, for some of you to see exactly what I mean. This said nothing would please me more if 10 or 11 artists of true Quality and stardom suddenly jumped to prominance in the next 10 years, and they were good enough to keep on writing fantastic Songs and themes for 30 years or more Yes 30 years this is what were talking in terms of for Elton John, U2, Stevie Wonder, and the rest. I ask how many artists that made it in the early 90's are still going now with CD's in the top ten of the charts.I fully accept that everyone has his or her right to there taste and Opinion. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2006 23:56:04 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Happy Birthday Love!!
