Although I'm a long time (long time...a couple of years!) user at jmdl.com, I've just subscribed to the list, so it's time for an introduction! Well, I was told to do so, beacuse I would've found a lot of people here longing to meet me... I am Danilo, I'm 24 and I live in Bari, Puglia, Italia. How many Italian subscribers are there??? I've been a Joniphile since a couple of years or more and I'm totally and continuously blown away by her music and her artistry. I play guitar and enjoy singing and playing Joni's songs and I wish I could play the piano, because the piano songs are the ones I like most, even though my favourites are Hejira and Amelia. Some days ago I was visiting youtube.com, looking for some Joni live videos. I found some, and I also looked for other artists that I like (E Badu, Bjork , The Cranberries, Alanis, Siniad...) and I found a lot of fans who posted their own covers videos. So I asked myself "Why can't I?". I embraced my guitar, switched on my webcam in front of my big nose and started singing and filming. At the start I was really afraid someone would've said "Hey, but wtf are you donig?Who the hell do you think you are?" (well, some said). In spite of this fear of mine, people were posting really pleasing comments and I was happy =) Video by video, comment by comment, wedding proposal by wedding proposal (how strange it is...), one day I received an email by a certain Mark-Leon Thorne. As I read he was a member of the jonimitchell.com staff, I was falling down from my blue plastic spinning chair. I just stopped reading and thought "I knew I shouldn't have posted the videos, now they all got offended by my insolence and want me to remove them...". I breathed deeply and went on reading. I started doubting of my English, since I really thought I wasn't understanding what Mark wrote, but 20 years spent on studying English can't be thrown in the dustbin by an email... Well, he told me that he was extracting the audio from my videos and sending it to Bob to make a cd of my covers for the subscribers of the list. I still have goose-flesh when I think about it... It was my dream to record a cd of Joni songs. Now it's slowly coming true. Well, my dream is to become a pro singer, but things happen when you don't expect them to, as in this case! Mark also told me that there's been a lot of buzz about my covers and invited me to subscribe to the list, because you were curious to know who this weird insolent and so self conceited/confident (this I added, Mark didn't write it!) guy is. Here I am. I know that there will be a jonifest soon. I'd like it so much to be there, but unfortunatley I cannot travel to the otherside of the world. My videos (or eventually the cd) will be my kind of presence testimony! Well, that's it, for now! It was in the Hartford Courant Sunday. Love, Patti P., wearing her Lamont pin, heading on out to rock in the FREE world! Demeaning Democracy Cheney Paints Lamont Victory As Helping Terrorists August 13, 2006 By Edward M. Kennedy Vice presidents are notorious for serving as an administration's chief attack dog, and time and again Dick Cheney has been unleashed to accuse anyone who is opposed to the Bush administration of aiding the terrorists. But this time he has gone too far. The comments he made on the result of the Connecticut Democratic primary - that it might encourage "the al-Qaida types" who want to "break the will of the American people in terms of our ability to stay in the fight and complete the task" - are an attack not just on Democrats, but on democracy itself. What happened in Connecticut is in fact a model for democracies everywhere. The people of the state heard a vigorous debate between two competing visions of how to protect this country. Young citizens became deeply involved, and turnout was high. The primary reminded us of the miracle of our democracy, in which the nation is ruled by its people - not by any entrenched set of leaders. There are few better messages we could send the world in these troubled times. Cheney's comments about the election were ugly and frightening. They show once again that he and his party will stop at nothing to wrap Republicans in the flag and to insinuate that anyone who votes against them is giving aid and comfort to the terrorists. It's obvious that this administration lacks basic respect for our fundamental freedoms. Cheney and his crowd are all for free and open elections - as long as they turn out their way. They are all for free speech - provided it supports the administration. They are all for the rule of law - as long as the law does not prevent them from doing whatever they want to do. When elections, speeches or laws are inconvenient, he does not hesitate to declare that they are helping the terrorists. I can think of no graver offense against our democracy. Ned Lamont's victory in Connecticut scares Cheney for one simple reason: It demonstrates that a free and independent people can and do hold public officials accountable for their words and deeds. If the terrorists are indeed paying any attention to the Connecticut primary results, they must be worried. The people of Connecticut spoke out loud and clear in favor of change. Ned Lamont will stand strong for the people of Connecticut, and put tough and smart foreign policies ahead of the politics of fear and more "stay the course" failures. Republicans will stop at nothing to make sure that the November elections are not a referendum on their misguided policy in Iraq or on the way they have run our country for the past six years. Unfortunately, this time the facts are getting in their way. The American people are ready to change an administration that let Osama bin Laden escape. They are ready to change a Congress that let precious years go by without demanding the implementation of the recommendations of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission to keep us safe. They are ready to change a policy on Iraq that has drained our resources, weakened our security, stretched our troops and recruited new terrorists. The November election will teach Dick Cheney and others of his ilk that they cannot use fear to cling to power. As Will Rogers said, "It's no disgrace not to be able to run a country nowadays, but it is a disgrace to keep on trying when you know you can't." Edward M. Kennedy is a U.S. senator from Massachusetts. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2006 14:09:58 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: Re: Self introduction welcome Danilo! I heard an interview on Fresh Air this week with one of Elvis Presley's sycophants, err... entourage. He seemed permanently in denial. He'd say things like, "We'd go to Vegas and Elvis would want to go from show to show to show. So, we did that for 2 or 3 days straight. Without sleep. Ya know, you can do that if you have amphetamines from Germany. A doctor gave them to us, so I figured it was okay, except that some people didn't make it." Terri Gross' replacement asked, "Talk about that for a minute. What do you mean, "they didn't make it?" "Well, you know, they'd drop out and go home, or they died in a car accident after 3 days without sleep or they'd die of an overdose or something. Bonnie Raitt said that Buddy Guy is largely responsible for changing her career. If I have it right, she was majoring in Afro-American studies at Harvard, learning to become an organizer and activist. I'll bet she was playing out a lot too but she didn't say that. When she started hanging out with Buddy, and soon enough, she said something like "I play a little too". (Hi Patti P.) He encouraged her to play more, and offered to put her on the tour. She took a sabbatical from school to play every night, and to live on a bus with a bunch of blues musicians. How that's a work/study program? I guess there was no turning back after that, except that she still knows a thing or two about activism. All the best, Jim L. np: some FM station is playing "Silly Love Songs"...
