I ain't got nuttin' against "ain't", even though it seems incongruous coming from someone with Joni's mostly perfect grammar and diction (with a few exceptions) - after all, everyone else was talking that way. And if Joni had simply ended it there, she might have had a Hallmark rhyme, so I'm glad she tacked on "afraid" at the end. But "those ones" sets my teeth on edge. After all they are covers of Joni songs.> I wish it was totally black & white, there are some shades of grey to be sure. I've stumbled upon quite a few live performances of Joni songs on the internet, some I capture and some I don't. If it's a well-known artist, and the quality of the recording is high, then I absolutely include it. I suppose you could debate as to whether or not putting a self-made video on youtube counts as "releasing" a recording or not. So, to positively side-step your question...it depends. For now, in this case, I am not going to include them in the database. I'm really intrigued that Danilo chose to youtube all these covers; then again, maybe that's the easiest and most practical way, and it's certainly a way to get them heard. I found the videos riveting and honest, and I admire the fact that he plays everything as it's written as opposed to doing the gender-switching thing. By now he's probably got the whole Joni songbook up there (except of course for the 80's stuff which folks avoid like the plague). And politics aside, what have you been grooving to since you were last here? What do you think of the Gnarls Barkley? I find it infectious as all getout, and for the most part a fascinating mix of old soul and new. For some reason your post about my Iraqi post didn't make it to this inbox, and since my evening schedule is so hectic this week I figured I'd just address it without the reference. Your question was a very valid one - - "Is there a difference between being anti-war and being anti-quagmire?" - - I don't feel that going after Bin Laden in Afghanistan was inappropriate and it was unfortunate that it was an unsuccessful manhunt, for whatever reason. I have to admit that I don't understand all the reasons for our continued presence there and I'm not sure that anyone truly does - when you're talking Middle East the issues are always very complex. As for Iraq, I questioned the process from day one, as well as the use of the word "war". Iraq didn't attack our country, and according to the sanctioned inspectors they had no means to (of course we have now given them plenty of motivation). I refer to it as a quagmire but it's probably more aptly termed an "Invasion" and now an "Occupation". I don't see as there's ever been a clear mission understood by the American people, all I'm hearing is "I'd rather fight them there than fight them here" which reads like a line of pure jingoistic crap. Does anyone really suspect that Iraq is going to invade our shores, ala the Duchy of Grand Fenwick? And by the same token, does anyone sincerely believe that anything effective has been accomplished by this administration against terrorism? OK, so we may not see airplanes being flown into buildings anymore, but we have no way of knowing what means a terrorist organization (be it Al Qaeda or another) will resort to. About the only guarantee is that like Ani says "aggression begets aggression". OK, so I'm rambling. I guess my point is that Americans want to see either results or a plan regarding Iraq - the only changes seem to be in the numbers of the dead. "Stay The Course" is a foolish mantra when the course is a bad one. I would hope that politicians feel empowered to take that stand. As for Lamont, I think the real issue is integrity and a sense of a progressive voice as opposed to good ol' boy cronyism. I'm not expecting him to have ALL the answers on ALL the issues, but when you have Senators who have been in place for decades and things keep getting worse, it's time for a change. Not to mention the rookies like my Senator Jim Demint who doesn't have the experience but has all the worthlessness. Oh, and it sounds like you're not in CA anymore - where have you drifted to? I heard on the news that today is the anniversary of the day Nixon resigned (August 8, 1973). Ha! I'm old enough to remember celebrating on that day! Maybe August 8, 2006, will be another day our country takes a turn for the better? I sure hope so. Brenda, thank you for all of your thoughtful questions and comments. I'm sorry I don't have the answers. Perhaps this is too simplistic, but for me this is all about the war. I want a Senator who is against the war, not one who is for it. Someone who will use that 250 million dollars a day for better things. All the rest, I hope, will flow from there. Plus Mr. Lieberman continues to "not get it". For example (a snippet from the MoveOn post I received an hour ago): "This year's election has given the people of Connecticut something unique: a real choice between two politicians with very different views of what a senator from Connecticut should do. In our primary endorsement, 85 percent of MoveOn members in Connecticut went for Lamont. Recently The New York Times endorsed Ned saying Senator Lieberman had given America a, "warped view of partisanship." This campaign has taught the people of Connecticut a lot about Senator Lieberman. But even today Joe Lieberman showed that he hasn't learned anything. Yesterday he called his opponents the, "anti-security wing" of the Democratic Party because of their objections to the war in Iraq.1 (As if the war has made us safer.)" (1. New York Times, August 8, 2006) Anti-security wing??? Well, that's the last nail in his political coffin, if you ask me. Brenda, I too at first was concerned about Lamont's lack of experience and his rich guy image, but after much reflection and discussion, I had to let that concern go and just hope that good things will flow from good intentions. We need to change the course, not stay it. If my motives are naive or simplistic, at least they are pure. I am a mother and a member of the human race who is against the war. Last night at headquarters it was hard work. I mean, there were some good moments, but a couple of really ugly ones. I don't think I'll ever work the phones again. I came home weary and drained. Politics can be really ugly. It's a "repititious danger!" ; ) Plus, as I knew, people are sick to death of these phone calls, and they let me know. Sheesh. Sorry! Just about everyone I polled though, said the war is THEE issue. Today started off better with a nice guy from down the street calling, thanking me for the message I left last night and saying he was off to the polls for vote for Lamont. Now I'm leaving for the Eagleville Firehouse. I volunteered for 4 more hours of last minute campaigning and handing out cards w/ instructions on which lever to pull for Lamont. It's my home district and if nothing else I will get to see friends and neighbors and get into the spirit of the day, hopefully with less abuse than I got last night. " The press release: "Carly Simon Sings Modern Classics - From Cat Stevens to Antonio Carlos Jobim - On New Album, 'Into White' Grammy & Oscar Winning Performer Releases New Collection of Best-Loved Songs & Lullabies for All Ages 'Into White' In Stores Tuesday, October 24 NEW YORK, July 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records announces the release of Into White, a new collection of beloved pop standards and touching traditional lullabies performed by the Academy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy winning singer and composer Carly Simon. The quintessential performer follows up Moonlight Serenade, her 2005 best-selling collection of pop music standards, with Into White, a soothing return to her primary musical roots, a pure and evocative showcase of best-loved songs, old and new, performed in the trademark dusky vocal style that's unmistakably Carly. Taking its title from a wistful Cat Stevens song from the legendary 70's singer/songwriter's Tea For The Tillerman album, Into White conjures a series of dreamy gentle moods in a collection of unforgettable tunes drawn from a variety of sources including Cat Stevens ("Into White"), Judy Garland ("Over The Rainbow"), the Everly Brothers ("All I Have To Do Is Dream"/"Devoted To You"), The Beatles ("Blackbird"), Harry Belafonte ("Jamaica Farewell"), James Taylor ("You Can Close Your Eyes"), Stephen Foster, the 19th century father of American song ("Oh! Susanna"), and Gaelic traditional folk airs ("Hush Little Baby"/"My Bonnie," "I Gave My Love a Cherry [The Riddle Song]," "Scarborough Fair"). Carly rounds out the album with a pair of self-penned compositions: "Love of My Life" and "Quiet Evening." Produced by Carly Simon & Jimmy Parr (who worked on Carly's seasonal collection, Christmas Is Almost Here), the songs on Into White are performed by a small intimate ensemble including Teese Gohl (who also arranged strings on the album) on keyboards, synths, kalimba and flute; Peter Calo on guitar and dobro; Jan Hyer on cello; David Saw on guitar; and Jimmy Parr on percussion, kalimba and heartbeat. Sally Taylor and Ben Taylor (each an accomplished songwriter and performer in her/his own right) join their mother on a familial rendition of James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes," from 1971's Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. Ben Taylor contributes vocals to several other songs on Into White including an enchanting new version of "Devoted To You," the Everly Brothers classic Carly first covered in 1978 with then-husband and frequent singing partner James Taylor on her best-selling Boys In The Trees album. In addition to her legendary status as one of America's definitive female singer/songwriters -- having penned such classic pop songs as "You're So Vain," "Anticipation," and "Let The River Run" -- Carly has also authored several award-winning children's books beginning with the best-seller "Amy The Dancing Bear" in 1989 and including "The Boy of the Bells" (1990), "The Fisherman's Song" (1990), "Nighttime Chauffeur" (1993), and "Midnight Farm" (1997). From her sly version of "Itsy Bitsy Spider" in the soundtrack to Nora Ephron's "Heartburn" (1987) to her songs in the Disney Winnie the Pooh films, "Piglet's Big Movie" (2003) and "Pooh's Heffalump Movie" (2005), Carly Simon has shown an uncanny ability to connect with audiences of all ages. Into White is executive produced by Jay Landers, who first worked with Carly on "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry"/"In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning," her duet with Frank Sinatra on Ol' Blue Eyes' 1993 Grammy winning Duets album. Landers -- who has supervised records with Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Celine Dion and many others -- provided musical supervision for numerous original cast recordings and soundtracks including "Miss Saigon," "Carousel," "A League of Our Own," "Remember the Titans" and others. He has also worked on a number of children's recordings including Disney's Lullaby Album and the Grammy winning "Woody's Roundup" from Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 2." Lamont won after a massive grassroots effort, which I am proud (and frankly, emotionally and physically exhausted from) to have been part of, but Lieberman is undoing all the joy that could be. At first I felt sorry for him when he came out to "concede", but then I got increasingly pissed at his failure to concede to the will of the people. The people have spoken! Power to the people! There has been talk that Chris Dodd (our other Democratic senator who is, by the way, thinking of running for President in 2008) will try to talk him out of running as an independent, but that seems like a remote possibilty, given that Lieberman has to file by tomorrow. I send up my prayer: Joe, you have served us long and well, and I thank you for your 18 years of service, but please please please, don't muck up our future. It's time to bow out gracefully. We can't take this war anymore. Merde! A mother's work for peace is never done! "Let's go on to win in November!"
