Iposted it again in its entirety for anyone who missed it. The hynm you chose is absolutely beautiful my friend...perfect. Synchronicity is so right with what happened to you listening to Jack's music in Chicago. I now have Jack's CD as well and I love that song "Land of the Tolls" as well! How perfect that the moment just kind of happened for you to hear the song while in Chicago. To me, I see a "coming full circle" in Jack's life going back home again to Louisianna to help his bretheren in need. When I think of Jack, I smile now. I see such beauty and symmetry in his life. I see him as a seed that is growing still and is blossoming in a different way now. The seed fell into the earth and died, but it lives again bearing such beautiful flowers and fruit. That is how I see Jack's life. His music is blessing so many lives including my own and because of his wonderful heart, he will do more in death even than in life. He will be more of a friend now than ever. Such is the heart of a man like Jack Neilson. No...I smile when I think about him anymore because I see his fruit growing and the flowers blossoming and I am so glad.... Love, Sherelle Patti wrote: Dear Paz and Friends: I am so sorry and shocked to hear this terrible news. Please forgive this late reply, but I haven't been on the computer hardly at all for a few weeks. I have been on a lonely road and have been travelling travelling travelling. On the first leg of my voyage I was visiting my son and his fiancee in their new home outside of Chicago. After visiting for a bit, it *finally* seemed okay to ask: "Ummm, do you mind if I use your computer for a few minutes? I want to check my email." Eager to see what was happening in Joni-Land after a few days' absence, I was b l o w n a w a y to read such sad and shocking news. Heart plummeting to the floor in a way-too-fast elevator kind of feeling. Chris caught me crying at his computer so I told him what happened. He always teases me about my JMOCD and being on the JMDL, but *this* time he understood where I was coming from. In some precious and rare commonality, Chris also has Jack's CD! We don't ususally listen to the same kind of music, but he had found Jack "on the Internet" a few years back and had bought the CD. At that time he asked me if I had ever heard of Jack Neilson and I said: "Of course! Why do you ask?" He told me he bought this really good CD and that "This guy played at something called a Joni Fest. Have you ever heard of a Joni Fest?" Ha! This must have been around the time I joined the JMDL, and hadn't told him yet, so it all pulled together in such a lovely way. Although I never met Jack in body, I have met him in spirit through his music and Paz's stories. I bought his CD over a year ago, and I have often shared his and Paz's story ( because "Love is a story told....") with friends, esp. when I reconnect with old high school friends. I usually refer them to the CDBaby version, saying: "Hey! Ya gotta read this!" It is such a beautiful story, of old friends not just staying in touch, but of their lifelong connection, deep friendship, and helping one another realize their dreams. Right after I read the sad news, I had no time to write because Chris and Ashley were taking me into Chicago to see the sights. (I have never been to Chicago before.) I could not stop thinking about Jack and his friends and family. Chris allowed me to play the CD all the way into the city. I was thinking how nice that was, because Chris usually has control of the music, while old Mom here sits in the back seat, a captive audience to whatever music he wants to play. (The years spin by and now the boy is twenty +, and is much more kind and considerate. Twenty-somethings are so much nicer than teenagers. Hold on, Cassy and Catherine! ) We got to bond with Jack's music, and it seemed a perfect and loving tribute to him, that his music should continue to unite people in love. Reminds me of Randy's sage comment about the goodness of a person that keeps going on. Yes. It went on in a Nissan Maxima on July 24th rolling down Interstate 94 (I think that was the road). Already in a "Chicago state of mind", I was really surprised when "Land of the Tolls" came on. I hadn't paid much attention to this song in the past, but driving on a toll road into the city where Jack once lived (a fact which, heretofore, I was unaware of) I was struck by the lyrics: "I don't care if the Cubbies win today, I don't even know where the White Sox play I don't wannta eat another sausage on a ROLL...I'm finally leavin' the land of the Tolls, finally leavin' the Land of the Tolls....Goin' back down where the grits are real, Louisiana makin me the way I feel..... " SYNCHRONICITY! As we drove through the "Land of the Tolls", I read the CD insert out loud to Chris and Ashley: "Michael Paz would like to thank: My deepest gratitude and love to Jack for trusting me with these beautiful songs and this project. This album is one of the biggest highlights of my life. Much love and thanks to my family Freda, Mikey, and Julian for their support during this project. Many thanks to my partner in so many musical adventures Rick Naiser. Many thanks to all the musicians who played on the record, Beth, Jay, Tork, John, Dave, Leslie, Christina, and Kevin. To all my special friends on the JMDL for their continued support of all music......" "CD Art Direction and Graphic Design: Freda Paz" A total family affair. Sweet. It felt special to be able to share that with my little family at that moment of the world. Jack's gift goes on. Thank you for sharing so much with us, Paz. I am heartbroken for all of you who were close to Jack, and my heart goes out especially to Sarah. What a beautiful eulogy she wrote! Such love. Such loss. So bitter. So sweet. Having just lost my own father, I know how painfully deep the sorrow goes, and Sarah is so young to have to feel that now. No fair. She is blessed, however, to have the love of her Dad still coming at her from all his friends. That is very clear. Love, Patti P. P.S. I offer up this hymn (author unknown) that was sung at my dear dear h.s. friend and college roommate's memorial service when she died in 2001 at age 48 of a brain tumor. Kristie Wood. (If you hate politics just scroll on by.) Of course, this is subjective and personal -- just my two cents and, naturellement, JMOCD-tinged. I have been working on the "Family, Friends and Neighbors" campaign at the Lamont headquarters in Willimantic. That involved going through the lists of registered Democrats and Independents in my town (I went the extra mile and did many surrounding towns) and putting my code number next to names that I knew. Those individuals all got a postcard encouraging them to vote for Ned on August 8th (YIKES! It's TOMORROW!!!) with my electronic signature at the botton. I had fun doing it and seeing so many names I knew - -- colleagues from UConn, old friends and classmates, lots of family names from my boys' "damned hockey game" days (I was treasurer and sometimes president of their hockey association for over 15 years so there were many names I knew), and it was particularly exciting to see the names of many of my sons' friends -- once little boys now all grown up and registered voters! The years spin by..... It was wonderful to sit in an old office on Main Street (uh-oh -- Joni tic - -- In France they kiss on Main Street! In Willimantic they campaign on Main Street!) working with like-minded, dedicated people. When someone on the phone banks got a discouraging response, we'd all give that a person a knowing little encouraging smile; when the opposite happened (an obviously good response) we'd all wink or give a thumbs-up or something. I loved the energy and the quiet hum of people working for "a wide world of noble causes." All I want to do right now is find another Senator! Tonight I am scheduled to work at headquarters again and this time I will be on the phones. I'm a little nervous about that because I don't like to bother people/interrupt their dinners, private-time, whatever. (NPIMH: Don't hang up (No No) Oh don't you do it now, don't hang up (No No) Don't hang up like you always do I know you think our love is true I'll explain the facts to you, don't hang up) Driving around town it is so heartening to see Lamont signs popping up everywhere like daffodils in spring. "Oooh -- there's another one!" Lamont signs put up like bright flags on holidays! You see very few Lieberman signs. Not that that's scientific polling or anything -- it's just the atmosphere, the good vibes you get. Speaking of polling, when Ned started he was 50 points behind in the polls. Three weeks ago they were neck and neck. Last Monday he was up by 13. Wooo hooo! But this morning I heard that now he's only up by 6. Merde! Driving into campus this morning I saw a political science professor I know so stopped to asked him if he is going to vote tomorrow. Ha! Who do I think I am, Kitty Wells, reminding a poli sci prof to vote??! Well, duh, of course he is, and this he told me: he just spent 3 hours up at "Four Corners" with the Lamont people, holding up signs while the streets were paved with passersby. And the traffic wrote the words: "Honk! HONNNNK! Beep! Beep! I'm for Lamont! I'm for change! We don't need your stinkin' war!!!" Our Secretary of State, Susan Bycewiecz (sp?), reports that 11,496 people have registered as new Democrats since May. She also said that, despite 4 mailings/notifications, some towns did not get timely absentee ballot info to soldiers overseas. There are 700 of them, I think she said. In the event that the election is close, it would not be decided until August 25th when those ballots are due in. It can't be THAT close, right? Tomorrow will tell, I guess! The whole state is abuzz. I'm sure many people are sick of all the ads in the mail and the voicemails they retrieve when they get home for work (I average three.) We also have a governor's race and LOL....one of the radio ads starts off: "George W. Bush. Doesn't just hearing that NAME make you angry?" (What's the opposite term for riding someone's coattails? I don't know. I never took a poli sci course.) Some of the TV ads are obnoxious, of course. And Lieberman's are, in my opinion, pretty pathetic. Whiny, in my opinion. "I've been your senator for 18 years." I've been writing to him for years with no response, and all of a sudden he decides to write back to me? He is as constant as the northern star. The ads that say: "Vote for Democrat Joe Lieberman" just slay me, because he has said that if he loses, on August 9th he will run as an independent but still be a Democrat. Huh? How can you do that? He knows what's best for the people of CT, he says. Sound like someone else we know who doesn't listen to his constituents, to the people? Hilary Clinton has said she will support whoever wins the primary. Bill was here campaigning for Joe Lieberman. I was disappointed about that but I guess old friends stick together. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and Danny Glover were here for Ned. And as Deb Messling told us (thanks, Deb!) the New York Times has endorsed Ned Lamont. I've used "all the spirit that's inside of me" on this campaign and I am very hopeful. I just pray that these hot hot blazes don't come down in smoke and ash. Then I'll have to find a dark dark cafe on Main Street tomorrow night. Reporting, alive alive, from Connecticut, Patti P. But I must confess that Ned Lamont rather reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger when he first ran for governor of California. What appears to me to be the commonality is that they are both people of privilege who haven't demonstrated any significant, material experience that qualifies them to do the incredibly important and crucial jobs they applied for. (Something that most of us wouldn't even imagine that we could do if we were applying for a job unless we were going to be hired by family or friends.) Both also state rather simplistic, obvious positions on issues and neither says exactly what they themselves will do about these issues. I lived in California in 2001 and had a firsthand view of how Arnold campaigned. I don't live in Connecticut so I don't have the benefit of having seen any of the postcards, flyers, TV ads, position papers, etc. that show anything in depth concerning what Lamont's campaign is about beyond being "not-Lieberman." Personally, I have no allegiance to Lieberman or Lamont. I'm not at all proposing that Lieberman should be reelected because of his experience. Far from it. But since I've been hearing all weekend that Lamont is now favored to win (though I guess today's poll shakes things up a bit), I would like to know more about what he actually intends to productively do with his seat. (I am also fascinated by this whole thing and the message that it somehow represents a national referendum. I'll defer that for another time.) Patti, since you are in the trenches (or anyone else who has a better view than what one can gather from the 'net) if you would answer any of these questions then I would appreciate it. Because I'll confess that I've read most everything on Lamont's web site and plenty of his statements to the press but I'm not finding the answers there. 1) I've read in various places that he is running as anti-war. Where does he stand on Afghanistan? 2) Jim Dean from Democracy for America was on Meet the Press yesterday as a Lamont supporter. Tim Russert, as he often does, gave voice to a question that I have about Lamont's position on Iraq given his public comments. He noted that Tom Swan said to the Courant on June 22nd that Lamont backed the Reed-Levin plan (phased redeployment) and was sympathetic to the John Kerry proposal of a date-certain withdrawal of all troops but he wouldn't necessarily vote for it because he wants to be a uniter among Democrats. The next day Lamont said he would have supported both Reed-Levin and Kerry. Russert asked Dean directly whether Lamont would have voted for John Kerry's resolution to bring all troops home by July '07. Dean answered "I'm not sure whether he would have or not." The Lamont web site says, "[O]ur frontline military troops should begin to be redeployed and our troops should start heading home." When would that "start" be finished? By July '07? 2010? 2020? Beyond just saying the troops should come home as soon as possible, can you shed any light on what he will specifically try to do or what specific plan he would support as a senator? 3) The health care proposal on Lamont's web site states, "There are numerous, thoughtful bills pending before Congress to institute a national guarantee of health care coverage for all Americans as well as to provide federal support for state-based universal reforms. I am ready to support viable plans that can move us forward in both the short and long term." Any thoughts on which bills specifically he is referring to? Further in the proposal: "Through smart, patient-focused cost controls, increased reliance on public programs and pooling, and redirection of current spending, we will have many of the funds needed to cover everyone. Any additional resources should be provided based on principles of fairness, efficiency and shared responsibility. " Has he or his team indicated what they think this gap of "additional resources" might be? Does he have any staff that are committed to analyzing things like this and providing output of real costs? There are lots of mentions in that proposal about government subsidizing, filling the gap for employers but no corresponding budget numbers or projections. 4) What is his position on how our government should be dealing with North Korea? Does he think we should be in direct talks with Iran? Or Syria? I have lots of other questions, but seeing as how this has already reached a gargantuan length, I'll stop there. Thanks to anyone who read this far. This post is acronym-free, in deference to my esteemed colleague from the great province of Ontario. Joni sang, >I am a lonely painter >I live in a box of paints >I'm frightened by the devil >And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid First "lonely", then "frightened", then "afraid". She's restating fear for clarity, I guess. She fits lots of different emotions in that song. - ------------------- He's steady (northern star), but she's sarcastic. (Where's that at?) She's withdrawn to draw (a map of Canada) and reflects on the mess (your face sketched on it twice**) with devotion (Oh you're in my blood like holy wine) and repulsion, simultaneously (You taste so bitter) and ultimately she's conflicted. (and so sweet) She's very conflicted. (Still I'd be on my feet) Very conflicted indeed. (oh I would still be on my feet) As if in a diary she's portrays herself (lonely painter) as very withdrawn (box of paints) and frightened. (by the devil) Only risking exploration (I'm drawn to) when spying a fearless guide is around (those ones that ain't afraid) - ------------------- Sarcastic, withdrawn, reflective, devoted, repulsed, conflicted, conflicted, conflicted, lonely, withdrawn, frightened. What a mess! In comparison to Joni, Fiona Apple seems calm and collected. Lastly, the official lyric is apparently: >I remember that time you told me you said >"Love is touching souls" >Surely you touched mine >'Cause part of you pours out of me >In these lines from time to time `Closer to the truth to say`, >I remember that time you told me, you said, "Love is touching souls. Surely you touched mine," ran his lines, from time to time.> *She* doesn't say, "surely you touched mine" b/c she's conflicted.
