I find this kind of thing just fascinating. I wonder if it the change was prompted by something going on with her right at the time (or just before) she was recording. The process of writing and rhyming while living a life is so weird and wonderful, so personal, and yet so public. Thanks! I have been pretty strong lately and have been comforted by so many wonderful emails from all of you. This one sent me over the top though and I was hit by a powerful tsunami. Lots of stuff has been happening. I went to visit Jack's mom and go thru some of his stuff with her to help her figure out what was what. We found lots of lyrics and some videos and cd's for his archive. It prompted me to go to his friend John's office and retrieve his multitrack recorder and I found a track I had never heard before. Yesterday I had a call from a friend of his who has a copy of tape Jack made 25 years ago. I am hoping to restore it and get it out to where people can hear how prolific he was since way back. I have been copying your emails for the family who love reading about how much impact Jack had on the world. Hi daughter Sarah wrote me a couple days ago and asked me if I could help her get to Jonifest in 07. We are going to set something up for her so we can make this possible. Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Love Paz P.S. I meant to post that I had got hold of a copy of Joni's new Songbook, but I have not had much time to get into it much. The only known cure is continuous immmersion in "Stairway to Heaven", "Freebird", "Highway to Hell", "Highway Song", "Turn the Page", "Toys In the Attic", and "Crazy Train" for two days. (We have a station here in Dayton which played those songs back in the day, but kept on playing them for 30 years. Back then, they played The E Street Band and Steely Dan too but those are gone from the format now.) - --- Bob S. --- I know it's late (but it's never too late around here). I do not know if this was mentioned during the thread, but I was listening to the Joni/James BBC concert from 1970 (the version Bob Muller sent to me with the "extensions" - was ACOY an encore, or outtakes ?). In that version, Joni sings "and I'm drawn to those ones that a'int" without adding "afraid". PS - James' guitar playing from that concert on A Case of You and California was much more unrestrained than the arrangements that Joni selected ("held him to ?") on Blue. Really fun stuff, IMO. Still, from an artistic point of view, I suspect that Joni may have judged that such extensive virtuosity probably distracted from the emotion she considered to be the focus of the songs. Even California is a bittersweet song, not a playful romp. - --- Now me (Jim) --- Yeah, that was a fine hour. Were the extra tracks these? I had heard the same immediate speculation and that was what I was thinking when I posted and never thought or meant to imply that Em personally said that. I'm sorry to Em for giving that impression. I have long wanted to visit Cuba because islands are my second obsession next to music. I remember years ago reading a story in Islands magazine about Pico Iyer's visit there and how it is spectacularly beautiful. Shortly after reading the story I took a cab to LAX and the driver was a woman originally from Cuba. As she was dropping me off I mentioned the article in Islands and she broke down crying. I sat there with her for some time as she let it all out (this was back in the day where you could actually stop at the curb for awhile without being shooed away). I have also heard many stories from Cuban exiles here over the years. Some recent reading revealed a lot that I never knew about Castro. My earliest memory is of stockpiling bottled water and food and my father showing me how to open the crawl space under the house in case of an attack. This was when the missiles were pointed at us and everything was on high alert. I just learned that the U.S. initially really liked Castro and was very supportive of him. He appeared on the Tonight and Ed Sullivan shows. He had promised democracy for the people and that he would uphold private property rights and would never embrace communism. Everyone believed him. And then as soon as he got into power everything changed very quickly and it all became a horror. Yes, Dr. Rice has more than enough on her plate! Ugh. I also appreciated Alice's thoughts. I don't know how we resist tyrants who back up their will with the barrel of a gun or worse. Then we have tyrants joining up and supporting other tyrants. I do believe, however, that Alice is right about root causes and the ways to ultimately resist and overpower tyrants. Coincidently, I was thinking the other day that if Cuba is able to transition to a more open society, it may be that many will need the assistance of therapists to help heal their long trauma.
