You're up bright and early and I don't blame you. It sounds like this nasty heat is all over. We had temps of 36C yesterday with a humidex of something ridiculous like 47C. Stepping outside of an air-conditioned building into that was like walking into an oven. You could feel your breath being sucked out of you. It's supposed to start cooling down here tonight. - --- Bob Muller wrote: > Happy Wednesday, gang! Here's the rest of my most > excellent Volume 79 of Joni covers. Your e-mail program probably doesn't like long "words." What is an AIFF file? Is that a lossless file in Mac by any chance? I'm not sure if those work for non-Mac users, but I could be mistaken. Maybe it's some other format I'm thinking of. I wonder if there's any chance of torrenting this stuff. I've got software that will convert from one format to another, so I could convert to FLAC if that's more helpful to some. However, there would need to be enough interest, and a place to torrent this. Dimeadozen wouldn't allow it, since it's officially released material, even if it is remastered. (Anyway, you'd need to be a member and I'm not sure if they're allowing any more on right now - it's not a snobby thing, it's just that they've got limited resources and can only handle so many.) Les, if you're listening, are we able to torrent on jonimitchell.com these days? There's always the DC++ hub if that's still around, for one-at-a-time downloading. I haven't been on it for ages and am terrified that it would take weeks to re-index my stuff. - --- Dave Blackburn wrote: > I looked in my digest this morning and the link I > sent yesterday > looks like it got truncated. They are uncompressed (but not the same as Apple Lossless). Mp3s are data compressed, and sound awful unless you encode at the highest bit rate. Mp4s aka AAC files sound way better and are the default iTunes Music Store download format. AACs are about 1/10th the size of AIFF files, hence they are easier to up/download. Windows has a bunch of proprietary formats too but the three above are pretty standard now. Needless to say though, I can make an attempt to relay the journey that I travelled on to see Mr. Waits perform last night in Atlanta. It certainly occurred to me relatively early on yesterday that there would be a long line forming at some point(there was and it went around the block-Waits made a joke about this I'll mention later on) but I also didn't want to stand in the heat for several hours and then have to buy $6 beers inside so I figured I'd head downtown on the train(appropriate, no?) around 5 which I did, wearing black jeans, a blue button up shirt, and a Garcia neck tie. I knew there was a bar near the tabernacle venue called the Sidebar, so I ordered a beer and sat down. It could only have been a few minutes later that I noticed a lady wearing a Raindogs t-shirt so naturally I asked her if she was going to the Tom Waits show and invited her and her husband to have a seat with me. They turned out to be very cool! I found out they were from Austin, Texas and were going to the entire tour. We talked alot about music and the jmdl came up several times...Jody Johnson actually called me while I was there with them so I spoke with her for a few minutes. The lady I was talking to said she was not a big Joni fan- she didn't really care for her high singing...I suggested she try Hejira and some of her later material where her voice is not quite so high. Anyhow, we had a few rounds of beer(which they insisted on paying for) and we headed over to the tabernacle to get into line. It was nice for once not to be surrounded by scalpers as all the tickets were being held in the box office. If anyone had said they had tickets for sale, they most certainly were lying. I did see one person walking around with a sign that said "Need 2"...I don't know if he ever got in- pretty doubtful. I did run into several people I knew once I got in who I did not know would be there which was cool. The performance itself was truly amazing. Very simple set up with drums, upright bass, two electric guitars, and a keys/vibes/ percussion player. I was standing just a few feet from the stage on a crowded floor but did not feel uncomfortable in the least. Tom Waits has such magnetism and finesse with seemingly reckless abandon. Very smooth performer, flawless showmanship. Songs that I particularly enjoyed...Blue Valentine, Tango Till They're Sore, 9th and Hennepin, November, and especially (one of the last songs, he played on acoustic guitar) Tomorrow from "Real Gone". It didn't always even matter what he was playing, just being there was electric. If I had a ticket for Asheville, I would definately consider driving up. He had a few funny lines throughout the evening as you would expect. Early on he said he was sorry about the long line everyone had to stand in(they made sure the show didn't start till everyone had made it inside) but that he wanted to do it that way or otherwise "you would have been buying tickets off of ebay for $1500, $3000 dollars." He also said he saw a statue outside that looked like it didn't have a butt on it and there "must be a statue somewhere off just a butt." Everyone kept shouting out stuff and at one point he said, "I can't hear you if you all talk at once, one at a time." Then he pointed to one guy who had his hand up and said "Do you have a hall pass?" Anyhow, I'm still digesting it all...quite alot to digest. What's the problem with that? It is always amazing to me that some people seem to have no clue as to the real situation in Cuba even after 40+ years of horrific stories from thousands of exiles. Even after they see people every year trying to escape in '57 Chevys made into boats. Unfortunately we have a few idiot and often uneducated multi-millionaire entertainers and former peanut farmers who go down there for the VIP tour so they can say "look at me, how radical chic I am, how I care about the revolution." You've got to be kidding me. Romantic armchair communists who make their millions under capitalism feeling self-satisfied and telling us all from their safe, air-conditioned, jet set perspective. China is already giving "aid" to Cuba to partner with them in drilling oil off the coast of Florida. Baby Hugo is also making all kinds of deals with them. Baby Hugo who buddies around with Little Dong Kim. Maybe Little Dong and his buddies in Iran will soon also get to deploy some nuke launch sites in Cuba just like the good old days. This is not for the "people." These are nothing but a bunch of malignant narcissist dictators with billions made off the "people" safely squirelled away in their off shore bank accounts. But I digress. I hope a new day will dawn for Cuba and its people and that they may someday soon be truly free and whole. I am reminded of a visit I took to an island in the Caribbean years ago. This island is a former colony of an advanced European country. I took a bus tour around and as we travelled the pot-holed rickety mud roads, our tour guide, a young Canadian girl, lectured us that we should not be shocked and concerned by the people who we saw living in literal cardboard boxes along the way because this was their "culture" and that we, as "products of the Western world" just do not understand that the people enjoy living this way. I could not decide whether my overwhelming nausea at that point was because of the stench of raw human sewage wafting in through the bus windows or because of our guide's idea of "enlightenment."
