You should!!! I've just enjoyed listening to one hour of quality radio from New Zealand. Rebecca Blundell has done a great job - searching through and capturing important stories and songs of our beloved Lady...I see that Radio New Zealand will feature Joni as the weeks artist every weekday 9 am. bad timing for Norwegian (I don't want to be at my work- where I have internet at 11 in the night )- but maybe it works better for other on the list. Higly recomended!!! I love quality Radio! - - Oddmund - Norway Hi everyone This is a bit of shameless self-promotion, but there's a 6 part Joni Mitchell Composer of the Week series on Concert FM, Radio New Zealand's fine (read mostly classical) music network, beginning 9am this Sunday 30 July NZ time. The first programme is repeated on Monday night at 7pm and is an overview of Joni's musical life featuring musical excerpts. Then each morning Monday - Friday (31 July - 4 August) at 9am there are 5 programmes which move through Joni's career chronologically, featuring a lot of music from Joni's recordings. If anyone wants to listen in, Concert FM streams live on the net - - - here's the link: http://www.radionz.co.nz/audio/live/concert If you want to know more about what's in the programmes, go to the schedules page http://www.radionz.co.nz/cfm/schedules, click on each day individually and scroll to 9am to read more about what's on each day. If you do get a chance to listen in, I hope you enjoy it :) Rebecca Blundell (writer and presenter of the programmes and big Joni fan) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2006 07:49:12 EDT From: LCStanley7@aol.com Subject: Re: recruiting, njc Marianne wrote: oh, and because he' the only son in the family his mom says she was told he won't go to war. (????????) Hi Marianne, No, he won't have to go to war. It will come to him when they give him an all expense paid vacation to Iraq in his brand new sharp dressed man suit and let him bring his gun for self protection. I think his mother is hearing what she wants to hear. A Dylan song is now playing in my head: "When John Brown went off to war, to fight on a foreign shore, his mama sure was proud of him. He stood so straight and tall in his uniform and all, his mama's face broke out all in a grin..." Wonder if she's heard this song? Love, Laura John Brown by Bob Dylan John Brown went off to war to fight on a foreign shore. His mama sure was proud of him! He stood straight and tall in his uniform and all. His mama's face broke out all in a grin. "Oh son, you look so fine, I'm glad you're a son of mine, You make me proud to know you hold a gun. Do what the captain says, lots of medals you will get, And we'll put them on the wall when you come home." As that old train pulled out, John's ma began to shout, Tellin' ev'ryone in the neighborhood: "That's my son that's about to go, he's a soldier now, you know." She made well sure her neighbors understood. She got a letter once in a while and her face broke into a smile As she showed them to the people from next door. And she bragged about her son with his uniform and gun, And these things you called a good old-fashioned war. Oh! Good old-fashioned war! Then the letters ceased to come, for a long time they did not come. They ceased to come for about ten months or more. Then a letter finally came saying, "Go down and meet the train. Your son's a-coming home from the war." She smiled and went right down, she looked everywhere around But she could not see her soldier son in sight. But as all the people passed, she saw her son at last, When she did she could hardly believe her eyes. Oh his face was all shot up and his hand was all blown off And he wore a metal brace around his waist. He whispered kind of slow, in a voice she did not know, While she couldn't even recognize his face! Oh! Lord! Not even recognize his face. "Oh tell me, my darling son, pray tell me what they done. How is it you come to be this way?" He tried his best to talk but his mouth could hardly move And the mother had to turn her face away. "Don't you remember, Ma, when I went off to war You thought it was the best thing I could do? I was on the battleground, you were home . . . acting proud. You wasn't there standing in my shoes." "Oh, and I thought when I was there, God, what am I doing here? I'm a-tryin' to kill somebody or die tryin'. But the thing that scared me most was when my enemy came close And I saw that his face looked just like mine." Oh! Lord! Just like mine! "And I couldn't help but think, through the thunder rolling and stink, That I was just a puppet in a play. And through the roar and smoke, this string is finally broke, And a cannon ball blew my eyes away." As he turned away to walk, his Ma was still in shock At seein' the metal brace that helped him stand. But as he turned to go, he called his mother close And he dropped his medals down into her hand. I had just arrived to New Orleans and was sitting up on the stage, singing "Long May You Run" when in walked Kakki, Leslie and Steve Mixon, Claudia, John Van Tiel, Paz, etc...We later absconded to another coffeehouse where I played an impromptu set along with Steve on mandolin. At one point, Jack, had inadvertently locked the keys in the van. This was the first time I ever met Jack and I have pleasant memories of that whole evening. We ended up at a late night Chinese restaurant and serenaded the wait staff for several hours. I remember Paz singing "Long Ago and Far Away"...which is what those days seem like sometimes. We are all set to go, and I am just waiting for a certain webmaster (hint, hint) to get the pages up for registration and sign ups can begin! Full Moon looks fabulous, the new chef is GREAT, and they now even have wireless internet available in the lobby!! I just want to "heads up" everyone that because it's in March, and there is likely to still be snow on the ground, tenting will be for the die-hard winter-crazy tenters only. Since there is only a limited number of beds, it will be on a first come, first served basis, and there will have to be a waiting list once all the beds are taken. I will once again ask just for a $50.00 deposit per person to hold a bed. Hopefully, this will all happen soon, so hang tight for further details! They are processed heavily through mid-eighties electronic bombast which has not aged well but the actual sound of the album is tinny and distant, in a sense completely undermining the bombast. I thought I'd better fix the matter... So I have remastered the album and brought the presence, bottom end and vocal clarity up to what one expects from a CD nowadays. I will be glad to make this available to list members at no charge if you email me. I must ask that you already be the owner of DED so I am not cheating Joni out of a royalty, and as this is technically unauthorized duplication I'd prefer to keep the whole thing from reaching the attention of the suits. If you wanted to make a small PayPal donation to me to defray mailing and materials costs I wouldn't say no (use this address) I am just now digging the album the way I always wanted to because the sound is now visceral and big. I hope others will enjoy the new/ improved version too. I saw an interview with Leonard Cohen recently, in which he talked about having to make things rhyme in his poems/songs, and said that the discipline of making rhyme forced him into creating some pretty good lyrics that he otherwise probably wouldn't have. Well, he would know, but sometimes awkward lyrics are just there TO rhyme. Still, while I'm basically anti-rhyme in poetry, it does tend to work well in song.
