Here's what they're about ... Unlike MP3's, which compress original audio files (WAV's) into much smaller files with a lot less digital information (and therefore a loss in the quality of the audio), FLAC files perform "loss-less" compression. With FLAC, the size of the WAV file can be reduced by about 40%, on average. So, when you are downloading a disc's worth (or more, usually) of music, this is very important from the standpoint of how long it takes you to download the whole. The beauty of FLAC files, unlike MP3's, is that they can be decoded back to WAV's with absolutely no loss of any of the original digital information. WAV files can be burned on to CD-R's, whereas CD-R's don't play FLAC files. In a nutshell, they're the best way to transfer the best possible audio to another audiophile over the internet. Neither Dimeadozen or bt.etree.org does not allow the posting of MP3's. For people who are interested in listening on their stereos and in their cars, this is very important. Most of us don't have the hard disc space to store all of the music we download on the computer, so we burn the WAV files we've decoded from the FLAC's onto CD-R's and add the discs to our collections, if we want to keep the concerts or the anthologies or whatever. FLAC Frontend, the program that allows you to decode the files to WAV's (and vice versa), doesn't take up any disc space on your computer to speak of. As insignificant as a knat. Same goes for the bit torrent client you used to grab the files. Neither one allows MP3's. There, that's better. As long as I'm wasting bandwidth, I should also point out that, among bit torrent traders ... and this is what bit torrent has done, taken the place of mailing discs to other traders ... it is fervently hoped that nothing is ever converted to MP3 by anyone for any reason, thereby making it possible for inferior audio to make it into the gene pool. (MP3's *can* be converted to WAV's, but with significant degradation of the audio file. Here is part of it from our local paper: Police accuse man of online seduction A man was arrested late Thursday morning after going to meet a 13-year-old girl he had been seducing online and instead finding police officers, according to an arrest report. The man, 65, had exchanged sexually explicit messages and five phone calls since early May with someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl, police said. He "steered the conversation towards sex and sexual activity," the report stated. He agreed to meet the girl at an undisclosed location Thursday to have sex. When he arrived, officers took him into custody, police said. By Thursday night, he had posted a $50,000 bond and was released, a jail employee said. I always think of people who do these kind of things as being somewhere else, not right next door. Our neighbor on the other side of this man has a 13 year old girl. My sons, 8 and 11, have spent the night at this man's house when his grandson is over. The man also has a 14 year old granddaughter who used to live with him. One of my friends said, just because he got caught this time doesn't mean it was the only time he did this, that he's probably done it before when it wasn't police officers setting him up. The idea of police setting people up is uncomfortable for me, like big brother is watching us. I'm glad they did this though. I'm thinking I should show up pretty early to get a good spot up front though how early I'm not quite sure yet. I know Bob is going to the Orange Peel show in Asheville. Thanks to Ron for originally bringing it to my attention or I never would have known. It still doesn't seem completely real...kind of hard to believe until it actually happens. I've seen Ani at Wolfe, it'll be a great venue for Tom as it's very comfortable and intimate, like an old theatre. It's the smallest venue he's playing on this mini-tour. And I know what you mean, Victor - I can't believe after all these years (I've been a fan since the 70's) I'm finally getting to see him live. And he's got a great band touring with him. He typically mixes up his setlists pretty good too so we'll both get some surprises. Bob NP: Fairport Convention, "Chelsea Morning" Tired of spam? Yahoo! It's always a little bit weird to think that you never REALLY know all there is to know about a person, be it a neighbor, friend, or even a spouse. I don't have so much of a problem with people being set up; I think you see someone's true colors when there's some kind of bait out there...either you're going to do what's right or you're going to do something you shouldn't do. I don't see a lot of "Big Brother" in that sort of activity. Especially when the subject is protecting children. It's more a tactic used as a litmus test to root out the bad folks. What I *am* opposed to is when our government feels it necessary to know the contents of every email I send, every phone call I make, every library book I read, every website I look at, etc with NO PROBABLE CAUSE. Two very different things imo. Bob NP: The Band, "Chest Fever" Tired of spam? Yahoo! First of all I would like to let everyone know that in lieu of flowers etc. you can send a donation to: Sarah Neilson c/o Michael Paz 17 Waverly Place Destrehan, La. 70047 I promise to faithfully get those donations directly to her to help her along now that she doesn't have the gentle giant sending her money anymore. I have also converted payments from all CD sales thru the following outlets CDBaby/jackneilson, Tower Records, Louisiana Music Factory, and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, to go directly to Sarah. So if you don't have a copy of Jack's debut CD please pick up a copy. You can hear samples at jackneilson.com as well as cdbaby.com/jackneilson. To start my day on Thursday, I woke up and went right to the computer to try and put some more video and audio files together to show during the visitation at the funeral home. Fed Ex knocked on the door around 8:30am and it was a package from Arlo and Jackie Guthrie. It was a Jackumentary (Jack Neilson Ridin' On The City of New Orleans 2005) produced by them between Sunday and sometime on Wednesday. It is a almost 2 hour piece of Jack's a lot of Jack's performances from the tour as well as some jams of all of us playing and singing on the train and in the depots etc. It is just simply stunning work and such a heartfelt effort with a thank you to me at the end of the piece for bringing Jack to them. Well that was the first tsunami of the day. Mikey helped me get our 50" TV in the car and my workmate brought the PA from the office and we went to the funeral home and set up. We ran the video footage during the entire visitation period and everyone loved it. I was able to spend some time paying my respects to Jack before everyone else got there. The turnout was incredible. I think there was around 300-400 pp that came thru and the chapel was overflowing for the service. Many of the players from Jack's record came including Beth Patterson and David Torkanowsky. So many many friends each one who thought of him as "best friend" and plenty of people who only knew him a little bit that still made a profound enough effect on them that they came to celebrate his life. The eulogies were done by his daughter Sarah, his sister Margaret, and his old friend (now actor) Roger Wilson. All three were brilliant especially Sarah's. She is a brilliant writer. All of the eulogies will be posted on his website very soon. It was a bitter sweet moment and one that I will not soon forget. Our friend John Parker played a live version of Hello My Old Friend and then they had asked me to speak about working with him which I was able to choke out a few sentences and then played If You Can from the CD. When it was over I shut off my ipod and sat back down. The minister began speaking and about half a minute later all of a sudden my ipod came back on playing Age of Aquarius. I jumped up like I was shot and shut it down and muted the channel of the console. I turned around and pointed at the coffin and said "you did that!" and of course everybody laughed. It was really hysterical. Several other things happened that made me think he was still lurking in our midst (which I will talk about in a minute). I was honoured to be a pall bearer at the funeral even though it was extremely hard to do. I tried to look strong but I am pretty sure I looked like a wet dish rag like most of his other friends. I left before they lowered him into the ground. I heard from a friend that after everyone left a friend of his came by and asked the gravediggers if she could throw a radio in for him. Must be the Mayan in me that thought that was pretty cool (altho my ancestors probably wouldn't have thought of a radio but would have placed a weapon and other useful things of that the dead might need in the afterworld). We really have some funny friends. I was talking to a friend of his family who asked me about the work I had done and the process. I was telling her all about it while we ate some food and as I was telling her how hard it had been to get it all just right, a bouquet of flowers jumped out of a vase on the table in front of me. Today John Parker came over to teach me a Gorka tune that I will play at a memorial at the Neutral Ground coffee house where he use to play (Victor Johnson played there during the Pazfest weekend). While we were talking all of a sudden "Blue" played on the TV. It was part of a TV show called Saved, but John I both thought whoa.... While I was typing this email I stopped to think about something and was looking at the screen and suddenly it was just doing a whole bunch of tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt's. If anyone were gonna call me from the other side it would be my boy Jack. A card carrying member of the Art Bell fan club. The family has reached out to me and a huge way and expressed their love and gratitude for all the music I have recorded and getting him on the Arlo tour. While it is extremely frightening to put out a record for my dear friend that is no longer here, I am up for the challenge. It will be very hard without him here laughing and cutting up and giving me a hard time and he won't be doing any overdubs for me or last minute background vocals. I will tap Beth Patterson and Tork and John Parker as well as some of the other players from Here I Go Again to help with 3 studio tracks that we have. The I have a few demos and covers as well as some live material that I will leave as is and just master. This will be done with a lot of love as a tribute to him for his daughter and her future. I am also archiving every known recording and interview etc. for the family. I emailed his 87 year old mom a mp4 of one his unreleased tracks called Half a Century Old. It is a brilliant song he played on the tour last year. Ironic that he was 50 when he died. I am leaning towards calling the album that but am in too fragile a state still to commit to anything just yet. Any pics or recordings out there that anyone may have that are not published (on web sites of ours) would be welcomed by me and deeply appreciated by the family. His mom left me a phone message on the machine tonight cause we were out with attending a Bday party. She was so happy and said that it was like he was sitting in the room with her. How cool is it that his mom is spinning mp3's on her puter at home? Once again I thank all of you who have written to me privately and sent me cards and phoned. My heart is full of your love and caring and I am blessed to be amongst such a wonderful group of friends. Thanks once again to Joan for being the mother conduit and an inspiration. May you all have a blessed weekend filled with peace love music good friends and family and some good food.
