It wouldn't sound right without "afraid." She's not writing in iambic pentameter. And it works. It's a song, not a poem. Joni writes songs, not poems (regardless of what Camille Paglia says). Great songs. There's not a wasted word in "A Case of You" nor a wasted note. Curmudgeonly yours Professor Flynn Hi Ya'll, Reading some of Joni's songs without the music has helped me understand the difference between lyrics and poetry. Some of her songs read like poems but some don't. It is amazing how Joni's music brings lyrics to life by painting an emotion on them that I sometimes couldn't get by just reading her lyrics. In my experience, poems don't always make good lyrics, and sometimes I've seen how my poems lose something when I use them as lyrics. My goal in putting poems to music has not been to write songs but rather is to remember my poems. I started putting my poems to music only after my mother inadvertently threw out a lot of my poems, and I couldn't remember them good enough to put them on paper again which broke my heart as if I'd lost somebody close to me. I never wanted that to happen again. I'm not a song writer at all and don't know the first thing about it really. I liked hearing in high school about poets who were not read until after they died. That inspired me to continue writing because I knew I didn't have to "go public" with what I'd written. Similarly, I've never written songs with the intention of performing. I'm not a performer either and don't know the first thing about it really. I'm draw to those ones that are and ain't afraid... wink. I love watching Joni perform especially in videos of her early days; her eyes captivate me. Perform... what a strange word that is. I doubt that I analyze each line but I know I respond to certain lyrics with emotional intensity. Joni's work springs forth from her personal experiences or personal thoughts about a particular subject. She invites us to respond with our own personal response. Her words and feelings flow...she invites our emotional flow of reactions and responses. I have never reacted to another artist with such passion to the anticipation I feel when I learn of a new Joni release. I marvel as I respond and think so deeply about a particular phrase. The magic within Joni is what I imagine is her invitation to feel so deeply in response to a line, an entire piece of her work. It feels as though she's in tune with some of my personal experiences and emotional responses. For me, Joni is all about emotional response; the awe she inspires as I carefully listen to what I imagine may be the meaning of her work. Just some thoughts.... I've been thinking alot about this topic. I don't want to say Joni's perfect, but I doubt there are any "mistakes" in that I think she always does what seems right to her at the time. That a word is redundant or doesn't fit a pattern doesn't mean it shouldn't be there. When Schoenberg was explaining his compositional theory to Weburn, the latter was interested, but a little uncomfortable with the idea of writing within a system. Then he noticed that there was a note in a piece that didn't fit the system. He pointed this out to Schoenberg, and asked why the note was there. Schoenberg simply said "I don't know" and didn't seem concerned. It was then that Weburn decided working with this system would be fine. Michael Flaherty - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Thanks for the kind words regarding Vol. 1 and the hearty recommendation. If you have a high speed connection (mandatory), bit torrent is a snap. Just download and install a bit torrent client (search "bit torrent" on Google) and then FLAC Frontend to convert the FLAC files to WAV files for burning. (Again, search for "FLAC Frontend.") That's all there is to it. Just drag and drop the FLAC files into FLAC Frontend and hit "decode." You're ready to rock. Winamp also offers a plug-in that allows for listening to the FLAC files themselves, on the computer. First I went and signed up for an account at Dime a Dozen and downloaded the file. then I discovered I needed a program to extract the file so I downloaded Burst! and extracted the file just fine. When I opened the folder I realized that the files are not MP3s or any other type of audio file I'd ever heard of they're .flac files and I didn't have a program which would play those so I downloaded WinAmp and still couldn't play them without downloading a flac plug-in. Is there an advantage to .flac files that make them worth all this extra effort? According to the Seattle Times a Pakistani man got through security at the Jewish Federation building with a shotgun, made a remark that he is a Muslim and is mad at Israel and started shooting. All the victims were young women. There has been one fatality, 3 in critical condition and 2 satisfactory. One of the women in satisfactory condition is 20 weeks pregnant. She and her baby are reportedly ok. Police have the man in custody and are saying there is no evidence that it was part of any kind of organized plot. He apparently acted on his own. The suspect has family in Eastern Washington and has a history of violence. What that specifically entails has not been revealed on the evening news so far. I walked across Third Ave right around 5 tonight after leaving work to wait for my bus. It was probably around a half an hour before the bus finally came and two police cars had roared north on Third in that interval with sirens screaming. After finally getting on the bus, we progressed slowly north on 3rd and began passing long lines of electric trolley buses parked along the street, empty. There was something a tad surreal about it all. Finally I asked the man sitting next to me if he knew what was going on up ahead and he said there had been a shooting at 3rd and Virginia streets. My bus normally goes up 3rd Avenue and turns east on Virginia, heading over to I-5 where it expresses up to Shoreline. Tonight we were diverted over to 1st Avenue and after turning onto 1st, I had the presence of mind to turn on my cell phone. Travis had left a voice message and while I was listening to it, he called and told me what was on the news. It's a good thing I've been taking Xanax in the past couple of days because the implications of this would probably have turned my stomach. As it is, my brain is aware of the ugliness of it but I remain relatively calm. Nevertheless, thoughts are churning around along the lines of how events on the other side of the globe can somehow unfurl tentacles that can reach all the way up to my city here in the northwest corner of the US and propel violence into our midst. It is sad, it is upsetting, it is scary, it is tragic. I know that this is nothing compared to what Debra and Patrick and others went through in New York on 9/11. But even in my relatively relaxed state, a chill has blown across my brain. It boggles my mind that events can be so far reaching and that human hearts can be so filled with hate that they can do such ugly things. I hope people don't mind my unloading this here.
