I know she doesn't have a "canvas cam" or anything, but does she ever peek out into the world and say hello? What is the last bit of news on her? I remember reading about someone in Canada doing a play, asking her to write some songs for it and possibly sing for it and she said she'd think about it. Any new news on that? Thanks, Wes p.s. Both "Wild Things Run Fast" and "Dog Eat Dog" are criminally underrated... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2006 08:22:50 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Joni cover on upcoming Madeleine Peyroux CD Heads-up to you MP fans out there - her latest project, the Larry Klein-produced "Half The Perfect World" will feature a duet with kd lang of Joni's "River". For those of you who have not heard of or heard Ms. Peyroux, you can close your eyes and swear that you're listening to Billie Holliday. She also does Tom Waits & Leonard Cohen covers on the disc and does some originals as well. One of the tracks is co-written by Walter Becker of Steely Dan fame. Should be interesting. Well, I think you have to look at the song in its entirety, and once you realize that she wrote it about Jose Feliciano (Chaka Khan let this tidbit slip), it makes a lot more sense, at least it did for me. The song's first line references a gift of a diamond from Jose to his wife: "He bought her a diamond for her throat He put her in a ranch house on a hill" So later in the song she refers to him as a "Diamond Dog, carrying a cup and a cane". The cup and the cane are allusions to Jose's blindness (a blind man holding a cup with pencils for sale and of course the white cane that a blind person would use while walking). Joni also refers to him as a dog, probably both in terms of how he treats his wife and also in the context of a seeing-eye dog. That's my take on it anyway - one of the myriad of suburban nightmare portraits on this masterpiece of an album. My heart breaks for all the people scared and suffering in Lebanon and Israel. I can't imagine having to live with such terror. And then, of course, we have this, just in: "BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- More than 14,000 civilians have been killed in Iraq in the first half of this year, an ominous figure reflecting the fact that "killings, kidnappings and torture remain widespread" in the war-torn country, a United Nations report says. Killings of civilians are on "an upward trend," with more than 5,800 deaths and more than 5,700 injuries reported in May and June alone, it says." The rest is here, if you can bear to read it. http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/07/18/iraq.main/index.html They are going after everyone -- academics, health care workers, gays, children -- it's mayhem for all. And our soldiers are in the middle of it. Our sons and daughters who, even if they come home alive and with all their limbs, will never be the same mentally or emotionally. And what do we hear from our President and his cabal? "Stay the course!" "We're turning a corner!" "These are the last throes." And just recently, when Putin told Bush, both at their respective podiums, that (I paraphrase) no thanks, he does not want the kind of democracy the U.S.A brings to Iraq (ha! good one! did any of you see that clip?), Bush belligerantly snapped back: "Just wait!" Like a bratty kid saying: "I'll show YOU!!" As if it will soon be accomplished.... STOP IT!!!!!!! I can't take it anymore. When are the people going to rise up and say enough is enough? Madonna mia! I'll tell you when. August 8th, in Connecticut, in the Democratic Primary. I can't wait to pull the lever for Lamont. Now THAT'S turning a corner. This primary is a really big deal here. Someone called it "a battle for the soul of the Democratic Party." I'm in the trenches, working at Lamont headquarters as much as I can. And now Lieberman, avowed Democrat (so he says), has started his own party (CT for Lieberman) so he can still run even if his party does not want him. See, HE knows what is best for our state. HE believes, HE has the courage of HIS convictions, yada yada yada. Argh!!! He sounds more like GWB everyday. Who does he think he is, Kitty Welles???? Ha! You just have to laugh, cause it's all so crazy. What else can we do? "Take a Stand by Signing the Voters Pledge! What if millions decided to vote their conscience and said 'No More War Candidates'? The Voters Pledge makes visible a powerful political force, the peace vote, a force that politicians cannot continue to ignore. It sends a clear message to the hawkish minority that leads both major parties to end the occupation of Iraq and to end unprovoked attacks on other nations. Sign the Voters Pledge and ask at least 10 of your friends to sign as well. You can help get 2 million signers in 2006." http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/codepink/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=295 (Note to self: simmer down. Deep breath.) Okay. Please pardon the rant. Thank you for letting me vent. I just read that CNN article and it sent me through the roof. (Plus I heard Aretha singing "Respect" at lunch time and that always fires me up, too! ) Be safe, Nuri, and everybody else.
