The bombing of Haifa made my jaw drop. Being the birthplace of my ex made me feel a little closer to home. Now I have a friend in the path of this destruction. Nuri, stay safe. The big concern here is the Australian government trying to get the hundreds of Australians out of both Lebanon and Israel. Last I heard, they were planning to send a war ship to evacuate a large number of Australians from Beirut to Cyprus. There is a childrens singing group in Beirut who are very scared. My thoughts are with you all in both countries. And it was a wonderful time even tho they almost killed me with the workload. I will report later. I am on my way to work. I have only received around 6 requests for the book which is not enough to place an order. So I will give it a couple more days to see if anyone else surfaces. I also have not heard back another report from Simon nor have I heard from Joel. Hope everyone had a lovely weekend. Central Standard Time, Bob.Muller@Fluor.com writes: So how did you like that Neil Young DVD? Cool, eh? Hi Bob, It was moving. Neil is timeless. I was particularly touched that he dedicated the production "for Daddy." I thought of Paz and his dad who had dementia, and I thought of Marianne losing her father a few months ago unexpectedly to a brain tumor... and I thought of my husband's mother in the process of dying now from cancer that has spread to her brain. She's receiving home hospice care now so it won't be long. I thought of life. I asked myself the question what is life? and found the answer in relationship to people rather than achievement of any particular thing. Neil is all about people. I asked myself the question, what is performing? Neil is himself on stage, no airs. I was amazed with Neil's band, his friends. They are timeless too. Friendship with him is timeless. I thought about time. Like (real time) in the subject line. Is it ever "real," or is it more like "There you go, you're gone again." Like the water pouring over the edge at Niagara Falls. I tend to want to grip time, but I can't. If I try to, I miss life. I thought about going with the flow. Neil does this so beautifully. I wished for Joni that she could still give to us through her music like Neil... in the "now." I wondered about his health and if he had any sequela from the aneurysm and surgery... a surgery I'm familiar with and teach a little bit about. I wondered if he smokes cigarettes and thought no way with his voice still sounding like it always has. I thought about friends who smoke and the subtle loss of health that causes, a loss we sometimes write off as normal aging even though it isn't. Real time, get real time... or the damage is done. I thought about Martin guitars. I played mine with Neil for a good bit of the DVD because I couldn't just sit there. I thought about what it must be like to participate in the song circles at the fest, something I couldn't do last time because I'm shy. I thought about a friend of mine who met Neil and how all he could say was Neil is just a regular guy, a father like my friend. I thought about the song Old Man and how Neil is more like the old man now in age and is still the 24 year old too... timeless. I thought about my own family, my mother's sister who will turn 70 August 5th in Fort Lauderdale, and how we will be there with her. I missed my mother and did some more grieving. I thought about my ancestor's and the wind. I thought about the prairie and having spent my formative years in Nebraska where it is so prevalent. I remember playing in the tall prairie grass. That is an endangered species I don't hear enough about. I'm not a fan of Neil Young. I don't own any of his CD's, nor LP's, etc. His songs are part of my life in a different way. It is like I'm the vinyl or whatever the CD's are made of and his songs are written on me. His voice is like that... very clearly set in my memory. The DVD had the same effect. I don't know if I'll watch it again before I return it to Netflix. It reached me deeply the first time through. My oldest son is out of town until Wednesday night, so maybe I'll keep it until he can watch it. I definitely want him to see it. Thanks for asking. I liked that Neil didn't turn it into some kind of pretentious "All-Star" event, instead he just played with the same friends he's been playing with for years. I recognized Emmylou, and....well, that was it. When I watched it I thought about how "the boys" are still going strong and Joni unfortunately chose to go out with a whiny whisper. My favorite has to be Jason Falkner's version, but then again I probably wouldn't enjoy his propelled rendition if I didn't have the pop-balladish Judy Collins version as a template. I love Davy Graham's psychedelic take, Dianne Reeves' recording is breathtaking, Orlando's obscure version blew me away too, just pure emotive voice & harp, and he builds the emotion to a real peak. I do try to find something to like about all of them, in some cases it's just the delicious awfulness of them. "Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of ticky-tacky, Little boxes, little boxes, Little boxes, all the same" I can hardly wait til the second season starts on August 14th. I've also enjoyed that the Cartoon network has brought back Pee Wee's playhouse at night time. It's amazing the famous actors that were on the show.... Lawrence Fishburne, Phil Hartman, S. Weeds is wickedly funny! The dealer Mary Louise's character buys her stuff from just cracks em up! It is very well written and so provocative I don't know what to think of it sometimes.
