Jesus, Bob! I'm trying to quit! Hi Ya'll, Jesus... oh yeah. People trying to quit have been know to drink things like anti-freeze. I have a friend who fairly recently drank some kind of engine cleaner she bought online and almost died. I have another friend who doesn't have much of her liver left because of abusing solvents. There was a time early in sobriety when I almost couldn't resist mouthwash. We don't have the kind with alcohol in it any more because I never know when it might look too good. I think the biggest fear I have as a recovering alcoholic is waking up from a drunk and not knowing how I got that way again. The last time I relapsed was on vanilla extract. Once somebody asked me why I drank it, and I told them because I was trying to stay sober. I didn't think extract would count, but it is 72 proof. Craving alcohol is cunning, baffling, and powerful. As for non-alcoholic beer... if you drink about 11, it equals one beer. There is about a milliliter of alcohol in one bottle of "non-alcoholic" beer. Right before I got into AA, I was carrying non-alcoholic beer with me in the car pretty often so I would have it no matter where I went. When I showed up at a friend's house with an ice chest full of it, and she asked, "what is this?", I was embarrassed and took a look at what I was doing. What I was doing was trying to stay sober by drinking "non-alcoholic" beer... It didn't work! Alcoholism is similar to an allergy. If a person allergic to peanuts eats something with trace amounts of peanuts in it, their body knows it and reacts. As an alcoholic, my body reacts to trace amounts of alcohol wherever I encounter it. Normal drinkers don't have this physical reaction. Love, Laura PS. This two-day event is held in the gorgeous mountain town of Idyllwild above Palm Springs CA and is situated on the campus of the Idyllwild Arts School under the pines. Any listers from L.A, San Diego or Riverside are not a long drive from here. You wanted to lose the smog anyway right? This show will bring a couple of firsts for us: the addition of Paul Carman on sax and flute and the debut of our most challenging Joni tune ever : A Chair in the Sky. Paul is a veteran L.A saxman and was part of the vaunted Frank Zappa horn section for four years. And our keyboardist Barnaby Finch toured with Tom Scott himself in the eighties as well as long stints with George Benson and Lee Ritenour. To say we have the qualified crew would be...well.....true. Looking ahead a bit, I'd like to give advance notice to all Jonilisters of our biggest show of the year on Sat Nov 4th, timed to coincide with Joni's 63rd birthday. The venue is a fantastic all-ages listening space (no blenders, talking or widescreen TVs) called Dizzy's in San Diego (dizzyssandiego.com). We will be bringing the full 6-piece band and playing well over two hours of solid Joni music, and not just the folkey material. Our show, which is largely chronological, now features For the Roses, Down to You (the whole orchestral enchilada), Harry's House, Hejira, Coyote, Dreamland, A Chair in the Sky, Cherokee Louise, Passion Play, Borderline, Night Ride Home and How do You Stop in addition to the expected hits and evergreens. This promises to be the Joni Mitchell event of the year, perhaps anywhere. We will be recording the whole deal to 24-track and may even have Joni's artwork projected above us as we play (thanks to Zooby). Please consider taking a winter junket to warm San Diego, make this a west coast Jonifest and come see the show. You can keep us honest on the lyrics!! Don't make it Last Chance Lost.... I just got home from seeing Bonnie Raitt and Keb' Mo' at the Oakdale Theater (now called the Chevrolet Theater) in Wallingford, CT. This is sacred ground because it's where I last saw Joni (May 27, 2000), Carly Simon (November 20, 2005), Linda Rondstadt (last month), and now Bonnie. What a lady! Such energy, talent, and spunk. She was feisty and having fun and loving the crowd. Of course, we loved her back. She joked a lot, and said she was a bit forgetful lately, and that at our age the only thing we retain is water! Everyone laughed. She did a shout out (twice!) to the old Shaboo Inn in Willimantic, which was cool for me because that's where I last saw her in the late 70s. I can't believe she remembered it! But *I* will never forget it, because at that show, at intermission, she boogied up to OUR table and had a shot of JD with us and tried to dance with my brother-in-law -- who stood there like a stone pillar, frozen, and we never let him forget it! "You idiot -- you could have danced with BONNIE RAITT!" (I saw so many great shows at Shaboo....if anyone on this list ever went there, I'd love to share stories someday. But I can't go there now...it's wayyy past my bedtime.) She called out for Terry Adams from NRBQ who she said was an old and dear friend. She thought he might be in the audience but he didn't seem to be. A few minutes later he appeared on stage much to her surprise and delight. He then went on to do an awesome keyboard solo and she just loved it. And so did the audience. She did "Nick of Time" for her parents, whom she misses. She mentioned seeing her Dad do "Oklahoma" at this very same theater. It was very touching, and of course I cried. She said she wouldn't be the person and activist and singer she was if it weren't for her parents. She is so gracious and grateful to all her musicians. She did a four-song encore, and the last was a beautiful, slow and soulful rendition of John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery". I still have chills. And her final words, arms outstretched, which I leave you with tonight, were: Pray for peace. Pray for peace! Yeah. What she said.
