Yeah, on my bicycle ride this morning I realized I "get it" better now. It's so slow and similar-sounding that I thought it was empty but there's a song cycle in there. To my ear, it's about a family on holiday. There are songs about the parents on a walk together, songs about arguments, and the duality between the responsibility of preparing your child for the world / letting them go. (On the surface it's about taking a breathe.) I still don't like the aural montage at the beginning as much as Randy's but I like the disc okay now. Bob Muller said, > In other Pink Floyd news, a CD/DVD called "Pulse" > came out this week - it features the only filmed > performance of the entire DSOTM album. Also, Syd > Barrett assumed room temp this week. I have enjoyed "Pulse" on VHS for a looong time. If ya'll have fond memories of a huge, detailed sound and an opulent light show, you'll *love* this title. It wasn't just the buzz, these guys did great concerts. I bought one of Syd's solo discs and didn't get it. His decline inspired some brilliant songs from his friends though. I'm glad it's better (even though "it's been a long time coming"). Your experience makes me realize anew how many body parts we have and how, at our age, we should be thankful every day when they are all in good working order! As for Stephen Stills, it was just a little cut on the pinky that required a few stitches. I found that info here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060713.wxnote13-3/BNStory/Entertainment/home Also on that page, on the right, you can click on "Aging Rockers Protest Too Much" to read a concert review that, in my opinion, is rather unkind. Methinks he doth protest the protesting too much. "Play what you want", boys! And maybe it's paranoia, maybe it's age-sensitivity on my part, but this critic makes way too many negative references to age (e.g., "greying soapboxers"). I'm thinking there's no way this guy is over forty. Ha! His time will come though, right? Darn right! I'll just think of the pleasure I'm going to have watching *his* hairline recede, vain whippersnapper! Bon weekend, tout le Joni monde! Love, Patti P. P.S. As I was writing the above, I got a good news phone call. My work friend Jen's husband and two children have been vacationing/visiting family in Lebanon. Just last week her daughter Sara called and said: "Mom! You should come! The beaches are beautiful!" Jen has been frantic the past few days, of course, because her family was 20 miles from the airport bombing. Well, the good news is that they took a taxi (or a series of them) in a long crazy roundabout way and were able to reach Damascus safely and hop a plane and have just landed in London. Phew! I send up my prayer for all the people in that area of the world....thinking especially of Nuri...and worrying about all the madness, and what our Leaker-in-Chief ("*I *am the Decider") will decide to do about all this. >Out of personal experience (still recovering from a ruptured extensor >tendon, first finger, first joint. left hand) I' suggest that tendon and >ligament injuries are slow to heal (years) and to a finger in the fret >hand, >to a guitarist, pretty hard to work with. I'm sorry to hear that- he certainly had a difficult life. The young, handsome pschedelic genius who started Pink Floyd had a similar path to Fleetwood Mac's troubled founder, Peter Green. Both were hailed as the best England had to offer the rock scene. Both started smoldering bands that later became history's biggest mega groups. Both took large amounts of LSD which triggered a spiral into mental problems, both left their bands. While Green has made some attempts to return to the stage in recent years, Barrett made 2 solo albums after leaving the Floyd before abandoning music forever, although he continued to paint. There was a brief period of time when both Syd Barrett and David Gilmour were in the band, Gilmour staying to finish their second LP, Saucerful of Secrets, but Pink Floyd's 1967 debut, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, was pure Syd, his compositions and performances seeming more channelled than written, completely original, at once delightful and disturbing. Their early shows were sixties "happenings" attended by the likes of The Beatles, Hendrix and The Stones. David Bowie sites Barrett as a major inspiration. Pink Floyd's subsequent albums often referred to mental illness; Wish You Were Here, the follow-up to the smash Dark Side of the Moon, was written about Barrett: Remember when you were young/You shone like the sun Shine on you crazy diamond Now there's a look in your eyes/Like black holes in the skies In the studio at Abbey Road, no one recognized the unkept, shuffling, overweight figure at first, until it dawned that it was, in fact Syd. When they were asked if they kept in touch with him, the band said that the family asked them not too, that seeing them depressed him too much. Syd Barrett died July 7th of complications related to diabetes. Saw the documentary on Leonard Cohen last night, "I'm Your Man." Enjoyed it. His songs were performed by many of the Wainwrights, Rufus, Martha, etc. as well as Nick Cave and a few others. Also had Bono and Edge speaking about what a great influence he was/is on them (Edge likens him to a holy many coming down from the mountain with the stones . ooookay.) A lot of Leonard himself, very entertaining man in a held back, wry way. Said he's not a nostalgic person and so doesn't have regrets or self-congratulation. I tried very hard to listen to the words (see below) and found I had to close my eyes or look elsewhere because I was getting distracted by the visual images. One side note: If you hear in the coming days of some kind of mass murder taking place in a movie theater, don't bother to read the article because I will be the assailant. So help me God, what is wrong with people. Are they all ADD?? This film was shown in our local art house joint that shows indie and foreign films and maybe I kidded myself when I thought it might attract a more respectful, pensive audience. Wrong. People were up, down, in, out, crunching paper, talking, opening the door, closing the door, popcorn popping noise from the outside lobby, a lady behind me narrating good parts of the film for her friend . although I kept turning around and saying "Shhh!" Either I'm taking a machine gun next time or I want one of you clever techo people to make lots of money by inventing the same sort of thing they have on airplanes. I want to take my noise-cancelling headphones, plug them into the chair and dial in the number that will get me the sound of the movie and block out all this other stuff. It's either that or murder. Maybe it's medication time ...
