Like Victor, I have only NEGATIVE things to > say about > Ticketbastard. > > Bob > > NP: Ani, "Sorry I Am" (but not as sorry as > Ticketmaster) > Ah yes, Ticketbastard! One of my favourite companies - NOT! They advertise tickets at, let's say, $40. You think, "Hmm, forty bucks ain't bad!" Then you go to buy. First they make you type in the stupid word (sometimes a real but weird one, sometimes a completely nonsensical one). You are sure you typed exactly what it says in the box. It tells you it's not case-sensitive. But often enough, it tells you you're wrong and makes you do another one! Sometimes it's hard to read what it says because of the crap behind it. I have bad eyesight, but it's not that bad - you just can't read it sometimes! Then after the 2nd or 3rd attempt, you get through! Yay! Then it tells you it wants $10 in service charges, $2 for a facility fee (Heh? I'm already paying to go in and I need to pay again? Is that for using the washroom? I'll go before I get there and if I feel the urge for going again, I'll hold it!!!), then there's taxes (here we would pay both a federal tax, then provincial sales tax.) And then there's shipping ahd handling sometimes. Isn't that part of a service charge? Your $40 ticket has now cost you $70. Not such a deal after all. You go to put it on your credit card. The credit card you choose is rejected. Maybe it's maxed out or maybe Ticketbastard just doesn't like you. You choose another one but now it's too late. The website has timed you out and given YOUR tickets to someone else! You have to start ALL OVER AGAIN! Finally, you've made your purchase. You tell yourself it'll all be all right, because YOU REALLY LOVE THIS ARTIST! You decide that because the tickets have now cost you twice what you thought they would, you won't do dinner after all. You'll eat before you get there! It tells you it has chosen the best available seat for you. You check the seating chart and it looks OK on the map. You get to the venue and there's a pillar just a wee bit to the left and in front of you - exactly in the spot where the artist happens to be standing most of the time! You have to crane your head to see her. The guy in front of you is very tall and very broad. He has a very large head with really weird-looking ears that stick out from the side of his head. He is wearing a very loud shirt that keeps distracting you. Are those hula dancers really moving? His female companion has big hair. They keep leaning towards one another to share their insights on the performance. Sometimes they smooch. Ewww. Together they form a very loud, very hairy and very dense wall. The guy just to the left and behind you is one of those hootin'-'n'-hollerin' types. He keeps yelling, "WHOO!" very loud. Maybe you should've just bought the CD. My $75 ticket was $90. But I was expecting that. (The more offkey voices, the better - NOT!) Second-biggest concert pet peeve - using your cell phones to take picture after picture...hey, guess what, Poo-poo head, those pictures are all going to be dark, blurry and sucky. Why not just enjoy the show, and maybe give your MEMORY a good workout. You can go online tomorrow and get much better pictures of the show anyway, so please don't waste your time and block my sightline. I've pretty much sworn off Ticketbastard shows, preferring the smaller clubs, but I had to make an exception for Tom. It was never more annoying than when Sarah and I went to see Bright Eyes a month or two ago. Jeeezus! The people with the cellphone cameras flashing all around us. It was so distracting! Maybe it's that generation. They ALL have those things. When it comes to concerts, I prefer to live in the now and just let it flow. Never mind worrying about taking pictures that are going to suck anyway. I think that's more annoying to me than the singalong types, but it depends on a few things - are they attempting to sing along with every song? (If so, knock it off, losah!) or are they only joining in when the artist asks them to. Big difference there. > > I've pretty much sworn off Ticketbastard shows, > preferring the smaller > clubs, but I had to make an exception for Tom. > Unfortunately the Bastard is often the only game in town. Boo! Hiss! The next time Tom comes to Toronto, I've got to see him, even if it does, and it surely will, mean dealing with TB! I've been to Springsteen shows where he plays a riff and holds the microphone out into the crowd and the joint ROCKS with singing, whether it's the whole first verse of "Hungry Heart" or the chorus of "Promised Land". Very moving stuff...but when Bruce takes the microphone and starts singing himself, it's a pretty obvious cue to all of us NON-MORONS to stop. When I went to see Pearl Jam, everyone sang along with every word of every song. It pretty much sucked. Maybe more bands should take REM's lead and have songs where no one really knows what the words are. Joni certainly would encourage audiences to sing along, most notably on Circle Game but also in the early days when she'd do "Born To Take The Highway". It's a fun way to engage the audience. Ben Folds does an amazing trick when he plays "Army" live; he gets the audience to become the various parts of the horn section - it's very cool. Much cooler than when the artist gets everyone clapping along, and once you start clapping you have to decide when it's no longer cool to still be clapping along, even though a couple of diehard clappers will keep. on. clapping. Like a decade-long thing. I'm going on 4 years. I still have a hard time playing a first position E or C chord, altho barre chords and things up the neck are more or less back. (Good thing I'm not much of a guitarist!) My keyboard proficiency (whatever there had been) came back first (months, not years) Good thing also, I have a day job! So hopefully Stills just tore some flesh and had some stitches, and a shorter rehab will get him back to form. He should stop falling over. Sounds like Cuervo at the intermission.... It's unfortunate that Wembley Arena resembles a huge aircraft hangar along with the associated acoustics and atmosphere. I remember Joni getting a decent reception and the comment meant as a bit of a joke. The problem is that even enthusiastic applause gets lost in the confines of the Arena. Also UK audiences tend to be a bit more reserved, especially when compared to USA audiences, without the usual baying and whooping. Joni gave a great performance and the final encore of Woodstock was stunning - transformed from the celebration of the festival into something darker, starker and chilling. It really made the hackles stand up.
