(and it sounded absolutely superb - a warm, resonant, musical tone, with just the right amount of brightness - i do think the martin 15 series is one of the greatest value for money acoustic guitar series around). also - the sound on all three nights was superb - loud, clear, wonderful midrange definition, none of that top end distortion that pierces your ears & leaves you with a worse headache than the alcohol. the first night crowd was largish, but there were still quite a few empty seats. michelle came on stage with rich armstrong and proceded to do her thing. singing, talking, telling stories, getting hugely emotional, wailing away into the mike in a way that gave me goosebumps & brought tears to my eyes. unfortunately she was also very unsure of herself, & how to treat the crowd - i think she just didnt know what the south african audience knew or expected from her. especially after a whole bunch of them seated front & center got up & walked out during the show....................she was clearly not happy, & when she left the stage after her show she looked upset. she also seemed to think that we only knew her by short sharp shocked, and songs from this album formed the backbone of here sets on all three nights. she opened all nights with 5 am in amsterdam, with rich coming up to the stage from back of the hall, followed by fogtown. then into the short sharp shocked. during the three nights she played all the SSS songs except for black widow. she also played evacuation route from dont ask dont tell, wanted man from mexican standoff, and little billy on all three nights.. she played most of these on the acoustic, but also had a telecaster there which she only used occasionally. the absolute highlight of the first night was The Ballad Of Penny Evens. actually - probably oneof the highlights of all live music ive ever heard. i dont think even janis joplin at her best could come close to the passion and emotion that michelle put into this song.,...... the second night crowd was a bit bigger, & much, much more in tune with what michelle was doing. it seems like the word must have got out a bit, & the people who were there were way, way more in tune with michelle & what she was doing. she started off a bit hesitant again, but soon seemed to pick up on the vibe & started really enjoying herself & rocking & hamming it up on stage. the setlist was very similar to the previous night, except no ballad of penny evans. she did play homestead tho - seeming very hesitant as to whether she should play it or not. she had just started playing it - then offered to play something from short sharp shocked instead - i think i was about the only one who voiced an opinion - very loudly telling her to keep going - which she did. then toward the end of her set she called up a couple of local musicans to come play along - totally unrehearsed. so we also got kevin gibson on drums, & schalk joubert on bass. these guys are both among the top in the country on their instruments. schalk joubert in particular is a really great bass player, with really good stage presence - hamming it up, dancing with michelle, interacting with her, and at the same time playing live a song he's never heard before...... still no encore - but at least michelle was available to sign posters & cds. i got a poster signed, thanked her for doing penny evans the previous night, & asked her to do it again on sunday. she said she'd see. come sunday night & the place was buzzing. the word had clearly spread in the right circles, & the venue was sold out. i managed to get a seat right in front of the front speaker stack, which was a bit disturbing during the first act - Robin Auld doing his brand of acoustic folk/reggae. and guess who sang with him on one song??? yeah - michelle was in full form, singing & dancing up a storm. the third night set was very similar. michelle opening with rich. doing 5 am in amsterdam & fogtown. then into the short sharp shocked mode. she was clearly past any kind of uneasiness now, and having a great time on stage. smiling, dancing, looking oh so happy, and let me tell you - a happy michelle is an absolute joy to behold. joy radiates from everything she does, and just sets the audience on fire. she also played a song which she had written during that day. it seems she had been told by someone that we south africans were sick of hearing about politics. i actually had been feeling the same way, but the passion with which she spoke made me just want to hear more. her response at the time was that it was good, it meant that we were dealing with politics, instead of just brushing them under the carpet. but that was clearly not her real response. she went & wrote a song during sunday - it was called pompeii, and was about the people living under the shadow of a volcano, without knowing what it was, and their reaction when it blew. the song itself was not particularly great, and she remarked afterwards that it clearly needed some major work :-) by the timeshe got toward the end of the set & called kevin gibson & schalk joubert out to play the whole place was jumping. she then got schalk doing the butt dance, which led to the whole crowd getting going doing it as well. she also played come a long way with the band which also went down a torm. she closed out with the secret to a long life, and left the stage. she had to come out for encores, otherwise the roof would have been blown off that place.................... the first encore she sang was evacuation route which kind of jarred with the dancing atmosphere that had been built up, but the crowd quickly settled down, lapping up the song, roaring their approval afterwards. then rich left the stage, michelle slung her guitar across her back, and did penny evans again. wow. just thinking about it gives me shivers, and tears again. what a way to end off. the crowd was literally gobsmacked for a while as she left the stage - then just went absolutely mad. michelle certainly made some major fans in south africa this last weekend. she certainly reminded me why i fell in love with her music..... as for the stories she told - well - they were: the story about isabel pearce (sic?) & being locked up till the insurance ran out, whereupon she was pronounced cured the story about fixing up the beetle & learning to drive (the first two nights with memories of east texas) the fact tha she was actually very upset when she learned that Anchorage was a big hit in South Africa. She had apparently stipulated that it not be released here as a result of apartheid, but the record company had circumvented this on a technicality she also mentioned how ironic it was that in those days we had been a pariah nation. now we were a shining example of transformation, while the US was now the pariah nation of the world. on the sunday during memories of east texas she told the story about her niece coming to stay with her in LA, and how she had attended a protest at the Academy Awards dressed in a burka made out of an american flag. when the news got back to her family the niece was on the next plane back to texas............... she also mentioned attending an arts festival in the us (in colorado???). when she made the comment on stage that Bush should pull out, just like his father should have, a whole bunch of the audience got up & walked out. she was asked to apologise for giving offence, which she did. then she asked the people to pray for the country. this time at least no one walked out, but she was met by total silence. she told the story about going to the church to hear gospel music, staying too long & getting saved, being baptised & spirit filled, and what a difference it made in her life. she sang anchorage, told the story about her friends wedding, & played "that love song". then spoke at length about how difficult love can be, that she was divorced having been in a difficult relationship, but was now happy. the ring on her finger was not a wedding ring - it was a do not disturb sign. she told about making a donation to the nelson mandela childrens fund, & getting to shake his hand (it must have been sizable. he may be a great philanthropist, but he also knows the fundraising value of getting to meet hime :-) .... and you know there may have been more. when she got to the end of signing autographs on the last night, i went & thanked her for singing penny evans again. she said she did it 'cause she remembered id said how much i loved it..........kinda cool. ron ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jul 2006 22:14:02 EDT From: PassScribe@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni in order In a message dated 7/4/06 3:13:43 AM, owner-onlyjoni-digest@smoe.org writes: > From: Michael Paz > Subject: Joni In Order----- > > I started listening to Joni records from the beginning about a week ago and > I am up to Ladies of the Canyon.
