My reaction? Applause, applause! He totally gets Joni, in my opinion. That was beautiful to read. After reading it more than once, I am in a state of high Joni arousal. It is so -- what are the words? -- gratifying, affirming, heart-and-mind-warming, so "I'm-not-the-only-crazy-one-who-totally-gets-Joni" to read his words. No one compares to Joni. No one. Ha. My kids would probably say "more." (A side story: recently we went out to lunch and I was blathering on, as I am wont to do, about Joni. Michael then said: "Chris, when Mom retires I'm sending her out to live with you in Chicago." LOL, without missing a heartbeat, I said: "Oh, don't worry about me! I'm going to the Joni Mitchell Home for Aging Children!" The boys just shook their heads and said I'll never change.) But back to the podcast....a big verboten "me, too" to what Herr Muller wrote: "And since Hejira is my favorite album, I loved this segment: "But you should hear these songs. You need to hear these songs. For the human condition is in this record. And youbre human. And if you can just slow down enough to stop trying to avoid the loneliness, "Hejira" will resonate." Thanks a lot for sharing the link: http://www.lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php Yesiree, Bob! Thanks again, Cassy. I also liked this part: "I always saw "California" as an optimistic song, one of hope and relief. But last night I heard a sadness. Thats what great songs do. They evolve as you listen to them, new meanings are revealed and you fall in love with them all over again." Both sides now of California. So true. This Joni. Such a genius. Please allow me a little poetic license with the Beatles as I share with you what's now playing in my head (and it probably stems from Mingus's "Big Mamma" post): When I find myself in times of trouble, Joni Mitchell comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be. And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be. Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be. Whisper words of wisdom, let it be. And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer, let it be. For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see, there will be an answer. let it be. Let it be, let it be, ..... And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me, shine until tomorrow, let it be. I wake up to the sound of music, Joni Mitchell comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be. Sorry, mes Joniami(e)s -- my JMOCD is in overdrive today! I didn't know that Oscar Peterson is Canadian. I am familiar with his CD "Night Train", especially that track, "Hymn to Freedom". That track made me open up the liner notes, years ago. (He starts it simply, like a hymn. Then comes some Baptist attitude, then the band comes in. Suddenly, the sass is gone and he sounds like a player piano. As it unreels, the listener realizes he's thrown out the rules and the muse is in charge.) I'm not black but can hear okay. That is one MIGHTY hymn to freedom. And it means a bit more now. "Hymn to Freedom," inspired by U.S. civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King, is one of Peterson's most beloved works. The inspirational, gospel-influenced instrumental piece first appeared on the Oscar Peterson Trio's 1962 masterpiece Night Train. "The melodic and harmonic line is total simplicity within itself, and to my thinking, personifies a form of Negro spiritual that might be sung in almost any of the black churches of America," Peterson has written. The vocal version, with words by Harriette Hamilton, has been performed by choirs around the world, a testament to its enduring power. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 02 Jul 2006 20:41:31 -0700 From: "=?ISO-8859-1?Q?LESLI=20A=20WATTS?=" Subject: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?njc=20sam=20shepard=27s=20play=20=2D=20so=20cal= 20listers?= sam shepard's play GOD OF HELL is at the geffen, which is a nice venue small and intimate, until july 30th. i plan to go. anyone want to join me and make a night of it? contact me off list east coast listas - has anyone seen it? any comments pro or con before i plunk down my hard earned cash? lesli ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2006 #244 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
